[00:00:38] <Bytram> then came unmounting the new drive from the external enclosure, removing the old spinny from the laptop... and realizing I didn't know how to do that, so I had to reboot the system to bring up a copy of the maintenance guide...
[00:01:33] <Bytram> Well, I figured (knowing my... skills) I had better print it out, just in case. That took about 10 minutes all told to render and print out (99 pages)
[00:01:45] <Bytram> then power off the lappy and unplug everything (again)
[00:01:51] <Bytram> remove the old HDD
[00:02:06] <Bytram> insert the new SSD into the old HDD bracket
[00:02:11] <Bytram> slide it into the lappy
[00:02:25] <Bytram> and then noticed the screws would not reach it.
[00:02:46] <Bytram> spinny was 9.5mm tall and the SSD was only about 7mm.
[00:03:10] <Bytram> Off to the store to find an adapter (that's another 30min round-trip)
[00:03:17] <Bytram> but they did not have one.
[00:04:12] <Bytram> Got a longer M3 screw in hopes I could use it to MacGuyver(TM) the drive up high enough so the old screw on the other side could bite and... yeah. that did not work.
[00:04:39] <Bytram> then I realized that would not work, anyway, because the edge connectors on the end of the drive would not be engaged
[00:05:19] <Bytram> tried, again, to slide in the new drive while trying to hold it up enough for the edge connectors to engage... Huh? IT WORKED!!!
[00:06:27] <Bytram> Screw it all back together, reconnect all the cables, hit the power button, pressed F12 to enter setup to reset the system clock (dead backup clock battery), and waited for windows to load
[00:07:07] <Bytram> And... I just got on and, so far, it all seems to be working (at least for the past 20 minutes or so)
[00:07:11] <Bytram> YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[00:11:08] <fyngyrz> so, faster now?
[00:11:55] <fyngyrz> I had great results when I changed my boot drive to an SSD. Boot is much faster. Nothing much else is, but I don't do much disk-bound work
[00:12:34] <fyngyrz> OS X's boot process is _definitely_ disk-bound though, so the improvement was very obvious
[00:12:59] <fyngyrz> Backing up the drive is faster too, now that I think about it.
[00:14:15] <Bytram> fyngyrz: Hi! Was off trying to catch up on scrollback on #Soylent -- what a chatty lot we've got there!
[00:14:30] <Bytram> Haven't done anything taxing on the system, yet.
[00:15:05] <Bytram> There's a couple things that tend to bog it down that I want to try, but have other things to do first.
[00:15:12] <Bytram> thanks for asking!
[00:15:28] <fyngyrz> yup, enjoy
[00:17:38] <Bytram> gracias!
