[01:52:25] <takyon> Fnord666: I had to delete your MrPlow spacex sub, it's a dupe of this one: https://soylentnews.org

[01:53:37] <Bytram> takyon++ thanks for that. I saw it in the queue and thought it looked familiar... but wasn't sure if that was 'cus I saw it on Ars or... someplace else.
[01:53:37] <Bender> karma - takyon: 111
[01:53:45] <Bytram> !whoup takyon
[01:53:45] <Bender> uppers of takyon are: Bytram: 87, chromas: 5, cmn32480: 5, Bytram|away: 3, nick: 3, mrcoolbp: 2, Fnord666: 1, TheMightyBuzzard: 1, mrpg: 1, charon_: 1, charon: 1, Fnord666_: 1
[01:56:41] <takyon> I wish it had comments, however it doesn't matter too much since we might get to see an actual launch (albeit small scale) within 4 months
[01:56:48] <takyon> *more comments
[01:57:39] <takyon> the late game change of the design to stainless steel is pretty crazy. I don't think the booster stage will get that, it will just be carbon fiber composite. Might end up looking like a frankenrocket
[01:58:33] <Bytram> why not make the booster stainless, too?
[01:59:07] <takyon> booster doesn't experience as much stress... I think.
[01:59:36] <takyon> the spaceship stage is the one that makes it to orbit, and is capable of refueling another one in-orbit
[02:01:51] <Bytram> I'd thnk the opposite... greater thrust to overcome greater air-resistance and [slightly] stronger gravity... all pushing against a heavier payload.

[02:03:06] <takyon> i need to find a source but that is just not the case
[02:03:27] <upstart> Sub-ccess! https://soylentnews.org
[02:07:08] <takyon> so basically, the booster for say Falcon 9 reaches Mach 6.5, while things that are orbiting reach Mach 20+
[02:07:53] <Bytram> mach !== mach
[02:08:00] <Bytram> speed of sound changes with air density
[02:08:12] <takyon> i converted it from km/h, just bear with me here
[02:08:41] <Bytram> also, upper stage is much MUCH lighter than entire rocket at liftoff; same thrust against less mass gives greater acceleration
[02:09:02] * Bytram is glad you didn't ask me to bare with you!
[02:09:40] <takyon> so the booster is just much slower. on the ground, it starts out at 0 speed/velocity obviously. It gets faster after the launch starts, but the atmosphere gets thinner. Booster separates long before an orbit has been reached and returns to the ground
[02:10:56] <takyon> in the opposite scenario, the BFS/Starship is in orbit around Earth at a high velocity, and has to return to the ground. It experiences a lot more friction. It is speeding towards the ground where atmosphere is thicker but has to get its velocity to 0 to land
[02:11:59] <Bytram> ahh, you are talking about going *down* instead of going *up*
[02:12:09] <takyon> it will have some propellant in order to shed velocity, and will have to aerodynamically shed velocity. Previously by aiming a heat shielded underbelly, but I guess not anymore
[02:12:47] <Bytram> prolly still underbelly, but not need any (or so much) heat shielding
[02:13:17] <takyon> it can use two of the fins (which double as landing legs) to help do this. but they aren't considered wings supposedly
[02:14:23] <takyon> in the September 2018 redesign, they had a dark heat shield: https://www.teslarati.com
[02:14:34] <takyon> now that entire thing is going to be stainless steel instead of white/black
[02:15:26] * Bytram thinks back to a Musk presentation which showed a visualization of a mars landing using what looked like vector graphics
[02:15:52] <Bytram> had some prettyinteresting reorientations as it went about shedding velocity
[02:16:05] <takyon> yes
