[01:31:26] <Bytram> mrpg: Hi! Thanks for all you did on the site... and the interesting commentary in this channel! I always enjoy reading it =)
[01:31:45] <mrpg> haha, thanks to you.
[01:31:47] * Bytram just got home from work... think I'll get some food ready for dinner... biab
[01:31:54] <Bytram> ohai!
[01:32:03] <Bytram> thanks to me?
[01:32:22] <mrpg> Well well well, spank my butt and call me Cindy. Turns out "tiny" and "huge" are opinions, not size. Stoopid language.
[01:32:48] <mrpg> Thanks for your kind words.
[01:33:23] <Bytram> I don't know about 'opinions'... for like people's assessments or perspectives on what something is...
[01:33:32] <Bytram> that's a huge oyster means
[01:34:01] <Bytram> that compared to a normal-sized oyster, this one is much much larger than normal.
[01:34:22] <Bytram> compared to an adult bear, on the other hand, that huge oyster would be considered tiny!
[01:34:30] <Bytram> does that help>?
[01:35:10] <mrpg> Hm... yes, thanks, that's the key, "huge compared to what?"
[01:35:15] <Bytram> =)
[01:35:25] <mrpg> So huge or tiny are not absolutes.
[01:35:34] <Bytram> =g little fleas have lesser fleas

[01:35:41] <Bytram> ^^^ fun read!
[01:37:44] <Bytram> =g "The Chaos" nolte
[01:37:45] <upstart> http://ncf.idallen.com - The Chaos - Gerard Nolst Trenité
[01:40:21] <Bytram> mrpg: ^^^ I don't know how far along you are in your studies, but this poem is an absolute gold mine of examples of challenges in the English language where spellings of identical words (or parts of words) have different pronunciations.
[01:44:06] <mrpg> I'll read it thank you. I've mastered some sounds and there are some that elude me. Like lust and lost. I don't get the difference when I hear the sounds in m-w.com, must be the age affecting my hearing.
[01:44:35] <mrpg> I get: eat it - cop cup cap - the den and some others
[01:44:44] <mrpg> then - den
[01:45:10] <mrpg> I don't get horse - whores
[01:45:16] <Bytram> lust, must, trust, bust
[01:46:04] <mrpg> It doesn't help that some people pronounce them a little different.
[01:46:10] <Bytram> whores around here at least is, the 's' is pronounced more like a 'z'
[01:46:22] <mrpg> In Khan Academy the course is American Standard English.
[01:46:22] <Bytram> do you ever have THAT right!
[01:46:46] <mrpg> Esperanto for the win!
[01:47:00] <Bytram> if you ever have the chance, people from 'down south' in the usa have a decidedly VERY different way of pronouncing things
[01:47:08] <Bytram> ditto for far down eastern Maine
[01:47:39] <Bytram> and there is yet another interesting variant in English-speaking Canadians
[01:48:26] <mrpg> Someone told me my pronunciation sounds like from connectticut. I learned English reading newspapers and magazines so my vocabulary always was a litle formal :-)
[01:48:44] <Bytram> a distinctive, but not so hard to understand dialect also exists in the upper midwest (Wisconsin / Minnesota )
[01:48:53] * Bytram chuckles
[01:49:02] <mrpg> When I studied I met people from Oregon, Texas, NY, California, Boston.
[01:49:13] <Bytram> BOSTON?
[01:49:15] <Bytram> ROFL!!!
[01:49:27] <Bytram> Now that's nearly a language unto itself!
[01:49:28] <Bytram> =)
[01:49:43] <Bytram> Texas does have a bit of a drawl
[01:50:06] <mrpg> Yes a girl who was studying law. The texan girl was pretty. Y'all :-)
[01:50:11] <Bytram> and, NY, even within just the city there are distinct differences between, say, the Bronx and Brooklyn
[01:50:30] <mrpg> My teacher was from Long Island. And another one from Scotland!
[01:50:50] <Bytram> As for me, I love learning new words and dialects... for some reason it always fascinated me.
[01:50:56] <Bytram> ROFL!
[01:51:15] <mrpg> I learned to pronounce Lochness hahaha, I thought it was loch as in "touch"
[01:51:16] <Bytram> A Scott speaking English is most... interesting
[01:51:24] <Bytram> yeah, not quite
[01:51:42] <Bytram> Australian English is quite a thing, too.
[01:51:51] <Bytram> ditto Cockney from near London
[01:52:00] <Bytram> Irish English, too.
[01:53:28] <Bytram> It has been fun trying to guess a person's native language when they learned English as a second (third, fourth...) language.
[01:53:53] <Bytram> there are certain 'tells' that clue me in that are hard to describe.
[01:54:34] <mrpg> Must be the vowel sounds.
[01:54:58] <Bytram> Eastern European, vs German vs English vs Spanish vs Italian vs Chinese... all have certain idiosyncrasies
[01:55:25] <mrpg> Spanish has five vowels, that's it. One letter one sound.
[01:55:29] <Bytram> partly, but sometimes the constants, too. More accurately, dipthongs.
[01:55:44] <Bytram> In French there is no sound like 'TH'
[01:56:16] <Bytram> French Canadians, (I don't know about Parisian French) for example:
[01:56:27] <Bytram> 'This' is said like 'dis'
[01:56:34] <Bytram> One, two, tree
[01:56:43] <Bytram> I see what you did dere
[01:56:50] <Bytram> Dis is easy
[01:57:01] <mrpg> I studied French at the French Alliance.
[01:57:08] <mrpg> dis is isi
[01:57:18] <Bytram> Now that we are at the restaurant, do you want to sit at a table or at a boof
[01:57:29] <Bytram> LOL!
[01:57:33] <mrpg> I heard a mini tongue twister: ed'd edited it hahaha
[01:57:55] <Bytram> lol
[01:58:11] <Bytram> loving this chat, but my tummy is starting to growl... gonna heat something up real quick... back in a few minutes
[01:58:27] <mrpg> sure go bon appetit
