[19:56:49] * Bytram left work early and is poking nose in to check up on things before making a very early night of things
[19:56:51] <Bytram> colds--
[19:56:52] <Bender> karma - colds: -7
[19:58:28] <Bytram> looks like it is a good thing I did... this upcoming story: https://soylentnews.org seems to incorrect as to the cause of the loss of the center core; I had read that it was a failure of there being enough TEA/TEB hypergolics to *ignite* the fuel/oxidizer mix.

[19:58:40] * Bytram looks around for a reference he can quote
[19:58:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, if you still got that thing it ain't a cold. even in us old folks they don't really last much more than a week, maybe two tops.
[19:59:00] * Bytram is certain he saw a reference in an Ars Technica story'c comments
[19:59:34] <Bytram> whatever it is, there's a lot of it going around where I work... and have heard reports of same out in the comunity
[19:59:50] <Bytram> not uncommon for it to subside and resurface for a couple months
[19:59:55] <Bytram> which is what I'm looking at atm
[19:59:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> ahh, well as long as it ain't killin folks.
[20:00:35] <Bytram> it would help if I'd regularly get a full night's sleep, but I've been running on empty for along stretch and
[20:00:45] <Bytram> likely have reduced resources to fight off what ever is ailing me
[20:01:33] * Bytram goes to look through 10 pages of comments on an Ars story to get a cite-able reference to the atcual cause of the FH center core not landing
[20:01:37] <TheMightyBuzzard> throw a spicy hot v8 in the mix every couple days. at least you'll be able to taste something.
[20:03:10] * Bytram has regularly been having 1/2 cup rice + ~14 ox can of chilli w/ beans plus a very liberal sprinkling of chlli powder for dinner
[20:03:20] <Bytram> seems to help clear out the sinuses, and other things, too
[20:03:48] <Bytram> no joy on spacex twitter feed... time to check ElonMusk's
[20:04:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> chili powder ain't hot. you need some red pepper.
[20:05:12] <Bytram> you eat what you like and I'll eat what I like (stolen from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer)
[20:05:31] <Bytram> nope, no joy on elonmusk's twitter feed
[20:06:47] <Bytram> so THAT is what TEA/TEB is! triethylaluminium-triethylborane
[20:09:54] <Bytram> takyon: ping
[20:17:07] <takyon> why did you set that story to not display
[20:17:09] <takyon> it was already live
[20:19:26] <Bytram> because it had the wrong cause of failure for center core
[20:19:31] <Bytram> almost done fising itr
[20:19:35] <Bytram> *fixing it
[20:19:56] <Bytram> updated
[20:20:06] <Bytram> takyon: please take a look and mark as display if acceptable
[20:21:02] <takyon> re-displayed
[20:21:25] <Bytram> there WAS enough *fuel* on the center core to land, but there was not enough TEA-TEB which is used to *ignite* the fuel... so only one of 3 engines fired.
[20:21:56] <Bytram> that gave insufficient thrust for the center core to decelerate sufficiently.
[20:22:44] <takyon> how much igniter is needed anyway. much less mass than fuel I assume
[20:22:55] <Bytram> ISTM they tried to keep the absolute maximum amount of fuel they possibly could in the cewnter core, to give as much delta-v as possible to the 2nd stage so that it, in turn, could achive maximum throw of the payload
[20:23:24] <Bytram> would explain why they reached an orbit well beyond the targeted orbit of mars and cam well-nigh out to the asteroid belt
[20:23:29] <Bytram> nod nod
[20:23:46] <Bytram> out of the gazillion things they had to get right... oooops!
[20:24:31] <Bytram> but, if that is the worst that happened, when they were seriously considering it might have a RUD right off the launch pad, well... they done GOOD!
[20:37:21] <Bytram> takyon: thanks a lot for 2nding the revised version of the spacex center core story -- that was some of the fastest search and find and quote and write that I've done in a while... really needed a 2nd pair of eyes on that before it went live.
