[00:00:16] <Bytram> also, there were a few rare occasions when the payout was large enough that picking all of a certain set of choices was [nearly certainly] profitable
[00:00:58] <Bytram> lastly there was a group at MIT who mastered "card counting" and made a fortune at the casinos in Vegas and (?) Jersey

[00:01:46] <Bytram> #g MIT card counting
[00:01:47] <MrPlow> https://en.wikipedia.org - "Beyond the basic strategy of when to hit and when to stand, individual players can use card counting, shuffle tracking or hole carding to improve their odds. Since the early 1960s a large number of card counting schemes have been published, and casinos have adjusted the rules ..."

[00:11:37] <Bytram> gracias!
[00:12:23] <mrpg> Welcome. Tile View is not compatible with my brand new firefox quantum. I'm going to restart, be back in 3.
[00:12:46] <mrpg> And takyon's extension stopped working for me too.
[00:13:27] <Bytram> there is an updated version of tile view for the latest firefox... but I haven't needed it yet, so don't have a direct link for ya. :(
[00:13:32] <mrpg> He told me to switch to something-monkey, because I was using grease monkey, but nothing.

[00:33:09] <mrpg> wordpress supply chain - ready
[00:34:31] <mrpg> Any plans regarding stories during the servers update or just "dont post anything from utc 9 to utc 11"?
[00:35:01] <Bytram> Excellent question!
[00:36:34] <Bytram> AFAIK, there should not be a problem... but I would recommend having a story go out, say, 10 or minutes minutes before the scheduled downtime, and then the usual span of time afterwards (~93 minutes)... Linode is usually pretty punctual about their reboots if past experience is any guide.
[00:37:08] <mrpg> ok
[00:37:40] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard: ^^^ any thoughts on this?

[00:41:02] <mrpg> international space station - ready, topic: answers. What is that for? I'd change it. Agree?
[00:41:39] <Bytram> the topic "Answers" is intended to be a surrogate for slashdot's "Ask Slashdot" topic
[00:42:11] <Bytram> so, someone posing a question to the SN community would use that as a topic
[00:42:38] <mrpg> Yes, I've seen it, but for more personal questions, not the ISS :-) ok I'll leave it like that.
[00:43:02] <Bytram> well, /me has not actually read that submission yet.... clicky
[00:49:54] <Bytram> 2nded... Added a paragraph to better explain who "Foale" is
[00:52:05] <mrpg> Intel datacenters - ready
[00:54:35] <mrpg> Well, I'll wake up one hour after the server reboot. I'll check the site to see what happened.
[00:54:49] <mrpg> Bye, good night, se you tomorrow!
[00:55:15] <Bytram> thanks for all the stories you posted!

[00:58:05] <MrPlow> https://en.wikipedia.org - "Rocinante is Don Quixote's horse in the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. In many ways, Rocinante is not only Don Quixote's horse, but also his double: like Don Quixote, he is awkward, past his prime, and engaged in a task beyond his capacities. Etymology[edit]. Rocín in Spanish means a work horse or ..."
[01:13:15] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, post all you like. the site'll function fine besides comment counts, messages, payments, and some other thing i forget.
[01:14:05] <Bytram> k... was what i thought, but was pretty sure that was an edge case that never got much testing ('cept in our early days, of course!)
[01:14:21] <Bytram> thanks for the confirmation!
[01:14:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> it gets tested all the time. slashd stays crashed for months at a time on dev and nobody notices till you tell me comment counts aren't updating.
[01:15:15] <Bytram> kewel!
[01:15:33] <Bytram> are we planning to down the servers ourselves? Or just let Linode do their thing?
[01:15:52] <Bytram> 0500 EST is, well, kinda rudely early.
[01:16:21] <TheMightyBuzzard> just let linode do it. it'll be good testing for unexpected outages.
[01:17:33] <Bytram> and for our ability to recover from them, too.
[01:18:12] <TheMightyBuzzard> think i'll go ahead and set the load balancer to hydrogen only now so i don't forget.
[01:20:05] <Bytram> obliged
[01:20:14] <Bytram> actually, is that necessary?
[01:20:33] <Bytram> shouldn't it be able, in theory, to automatically fail over and then resume?
[01:20:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> yes. fluorine will be down for a few minutes at least and i'll be asleep.
[01:20:59] <TheMightyBuzzard> nope. load balancer don't know if the web frontends are alive or not. it just splits the traffic between them.
[01:21:08] <Bytram> nod
[01:21:10] <Bytram> nod
[01:21:24] <TheMightyBuzzard> s'already done anyhow.
