[02:20:37] <nick> im sure theres a joke to be made there somewhere
[02:22:28] <Bytram> nick: s/a /a sick /
[02:22:30] <exec> <Bytram> <nick> im sure theres a sick joke to be made there somewhere
[02:23:44] <nick> well obviously
[02:26:05] <Bytram> ;)
[02:26:58] <Bytram> nick: hows things? Had an untimely scorcher here today... temps got up to 90+ degrees Fahrenheit
[02:31:52] <nick> things are alright... strong winds today, so its been rather cool
[02:32:00] <nick> definitely heading into more wintery weather
[02:32:23] <Bytram> ahh, you're still in the southern hemisphere? As we approach summer up here, you are heading into winter, right?
[02:33:04] <nick> yup
[02:33:54] <Bytram> nod nod
[02:34:44] <nick> although i will be heading back to the US in a couple months or so
[02:36:13] <Bytram> let me know if you are ever heading up to the northeast US -- would be nice to get together and chat.
[02:36:21] <Bytram> btw, how's that new laptop working out for ya?
[02:37:55] <nick> would like to but it's probably not going to happen, going to be going back to MI to see the sights i didn't and do the touristy bit, that was under several feet of snow last time i was there
[02:38:12] <nick> then a road trip down to TX and then FL
[02:38:14] <Bytram> that WOULD cut down on visibility just a tad, I suppose.
[02:39:14] <nick> laptop is doing good, working well for everything ive used it for so far
[02:39:28] <Bytram> so glad to hear it!
[02:44:41] <Bytram> nick: great dept line in the Chinese plow story!
[02:45:59] <nick> got to be a record for using 'plow' multiple times in one story, including headline, dept, submitter and the summary
[02:48:38] <Bytram> *chuckles*
[02:49:04] <Bytram> "plough" would have been nice or twice, as well.
[02:49:31] <Bytram> (not to be confused with "plugh" IIRC, a magic word in Colossal Cave)
[03:10:06] <Bytram> just finished 2nding stories in the queue, didn't see anything really amiss... kinda bring actually... and that's a GOOD thing! You guys are the best!
[03:10:26] <Bytram> and I think it's time for me to get some shuteye... catch ya on the flip side.

[11:32:51] <TheMightyBuzzard> blarg, i was bout to copy pasta that
[11:39:11] <Xyem> If I did alright with the "editor test", should I ask to be made an editor on production or is there something else I should do first (more practice perhaps)?
[11:43:23] <Bytram> more practice would be good...
[11:43:36] <Bytram> it's not so much learning from doing the right things...
[11:43:50] <Bytram> there's the learning about what to do when when I accidentally did something worng!
[11:44:38] <Bytram> for example, a typo in the release date/time field causes it to go '1970-01-01" (IIRC) how do you recover the story?
[11:45:06] <cmn32480> TheMightyBuzzard, any way we can stop the mneetnotes spam we are getting in the sub queue once a week for the last 4 weeks?
[11:45:14] <cmn32480> https://soylentnews.org
[11:45:16] <upstart> ^ 03Search 'meetnotes'
[11:45:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> well i dunno about you but i edit the db to make it a future date
[11:45:40] <TheMightyBuzzard> not so much an option for Xyem though
[11:45:42] <Xyem> Bytram: Open the story back up and change the date?
[11:45:59] <Bytram> cmn32480: yes, add a filter on one or more keywords that WILL catch the spam and not affect other submissions
[11:46:13] <Bytram> cmn32480: hmm, or is that wrt comments. :/
[11:46:27] <Bytram> Xyem: sounds good, but how are you going to find the story?
[11:48:04] <Xyem> Without looking at it.. the "back" button. Then preview it again to make sure nothing was lost.
[11:48:27] <TheMightyBuzzard> cmn32480, oh probably but fuck if i know what it is while my brain feels like it's been stuffed in a dirty gym sock
[11:48:48] * cmn32480 runs TMB through the rinse cycle
[11:49:31] <Bytram> Xyem: that *sounds* reasonable. assuming you haven't already closed the tab/window. Go ahead and try it on dev and see what happens... ;)
[11:49:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> cmn32480, Bytram can do you up a filter. he's played with em before.
[11:50:01] <Xyem> I don't close anything until I see it at the top of the list in the other window.
[11:50:48] <Bytram> WOnDERFUL!
[11:51:21] <Bytram> is tempting to *know* that I've just made a little change and skip the preview step -- it's bit me more times than I can count.
[11:51:42] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, best practices are all fine and good but much like you must consider edge cases in code, you must consider the possibility that you'll not pay attention and screw up in analog mode as well.
[11:52:13] <Bytram> we had a problem in the past 9and I think it's still there) that if you save a story, do "back" in your browser" and edit it again, there ends up being TWO copies in the story queue.
[11:52:38] <cmn32480> Refresh
[11:52:46] <cmn32480> not back
[11:53:07] * cmn32480 still does it occassionally by accident
[11:53:18] * Bytram sits corrected.
[11:53:25] * cmn32480 siuts upright
[11:59:30] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard: cmn32480; tried to create a meetnotes filter... gave me a massive and strange filter ID # ( 90922079 )
[11:59:31] <Xyem> I only refresh the queue in the window that has only had the queue open (not editing).
[11:59:46] <Bytram> followed through anyway, and tried to save it, but does not seem to have 'taken'
[11:59:49] <Xyem> Yay for tiling WMs!
[12:00:32] <Bytram> I've run into this before, and I know PJ has a workaround... is not coming to me immediately... :/
[12:01:00] <Bytram> is also 90+ degrees in my room atm and am finding it a bit challenging to concentrate.
[12:05:17] <Bytram> don't remember what exactly I did except kept trying buttons to create a new submission filter until I got one that was more reasonable (75) and then went and filled it out and saved it.
[12:06:26] <Bytram> now, whenever a submitted story contains 'meetnotes' any place in the story text (upper/lowercase ignored), they will get a message: "
[12:06:27] <Bytram> Please do not spam our story submission queue."
[12:06:41] <Bytram> cmn32480: at least it is supposed to... please give it a test.
[12:06:52] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, db edited your filter n it shows up now
[12:07:22] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard: I got it to work using the UI
[12:07:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya but you missed the g flag and put two other flags to 1 where it should have been 0
[12:07:52] <Bytram> something strange about "you got to 'create' it and save it, before you can put anything in it'
[12:08:06] <Bytram> oh, okay
[12:08:08] <Bytram> thanks@!
[12:08:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> yar
[12:08:11] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard++
[12:08:11] <Bender> karma - themightybuzzard: 9
[12:08:53] <Bytram> hmmm, why would I need the "g": flag?
[12:10:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> technically you shouldn't but every other filter is using it. if you're going to be redundant, do it consistently.
[12:10:59] <Bytram> I see 6 without it, but whatevah
[12:11:08] * TheMightyBuzzard chuckles
[12:11:57] <Bytram> is too hot to really concentrate much, am simultaneously trying to do some offline work stuff, and get ready for work...
[12:12:04] <Bytram> gonna be afk for a bit
[12:46:16] <Bytram> cmn32480: Hi! Gots a quick question for ya... ISTR on my old lappy running XP, I could set things up so that when I was connected to my 1920x1200 external display, I used the whole available resolution, but when I was using the internal (1024x768) it would have a 'virtual' desktop that was still 1920x1200, and the lappy display would show me a 'window' onto it... was nice as it kept the same size/layout of all my programs. o/w
[12:46:16] <Bytram> everything got squished to fit to the 1024x768 and when I went back to the external monitor, things were all scrunched up into a corner. Is there a way to do the 'virtual desktop' with Win 7?
[12:47:14] <Bytram> PS: when running 'docked' I do not use the lappy's display at all.
[12:47:34] <Bytram> afk back in about 15 minutes
[13:00:27] <cmn32480> AFAIK that only happens in remote desktop
[13:04:32] <Bytram> urgh... was SO useful. Maybe that was earlier than XP. Is one of the problems of being a gray/white beard... know too much stuff!
[13:04:38] <Bytram> apprecaite the quick response!

[20:33:03] <Fnord666> Well that kind of sucks
[20:33:06] <nick> storm last night managed to blow almost an inch of rain into the area by the front door
[20:33:16] <Fnord666> oh dear.
[20:33:26] <nick> nothing damaged, and i managed to scoop up most of it.... but it does mean the floor is rather slippery right now
[20:33:38] <Fnord666> no damage is good
[20:33:51] <nick> however, i decided to check out the a/c unit... and it also works as a heater, so i'm using that to dry the rest out
[20:34:09] <nick> which also solves other heating concerns, although it will be used sparingly.
[20:34:18] <Xyem> Slippery floor? That sounds like an opportunity. Let the shenanigans begin!

[20:35:39] <nick> i've been carefully plodding and sliding around this afternoon
[20:36:00] <nick> it's a bit dodgy when you're carrying glasses and plates and you just start to slip
[20:37:23] <nick> but still, i have chocolate milk and cigarettes so i'm not complaining.... just need to find something suitable seal the gap under the door

[23:08:54] <charon_> if another editor is in the same story at the same time, some text will warn you, but it's easy to miss
