[17:35:52] <takyon> pretty crazy stuff

[18:17:43] <takyon> Chuck E Cheese: "Where A Kid Can Be A Kid (especially when alcohol is involved)"
[18:19:35] * nick is wondering if the north korea nukes story will make it to this site... nyt article claims that 'us officials believe' that nk can make a nuke a week but this is 'impossible to verify'
[18:19:54] <nick> but the more it goes around, the further it gets removed from the 'impossible to verify'
[18:21:38] <takyon> I heard we sent a nuke sub back there
[18:21:54] <nick> i think there should be some kind of religion set up to worship the gospel of the unnamed us official
[18:21:58] <takyon> but your statement doesn't make a lot of sense because North Korea is already thought to have ~10 nukes
[18:22:07] <takyon> what they don't have is a working ICBM
[18:22:28] <nick> just part of the war drums beating for the administration to 'take action' in north korea
[18:22:35] <nick> even if the threat hasn't changed in years
[18:22:43] <nick> but we have to look strong and all that jazz
[18:23:02] <takyon> look at Obama's 2014 program to use cyberattacks to stop NK missiles
[18:23:10] <takyon> I think you are getting clouded by the Trump a bit
[18:23:23] <takyon> progress has been made in NK
[18:23:34] <nick> but what are they actually going to do?
[18:23:51] <nick> i'm sure they are developing their systems
[18:24:13] <nick> who are they going to nuke?
[18:24:35] <cmn32480> they try to nuke us... the whole country likely turns inot a pile on conventional rubble. I woudl think that we would NOT use nukes in retaliation, due to the fallout.
[18:24:44] <cmn32480> both political and actual
[18:25:00] <takyon> South Korea and U.S. are the stated targets
[18:25:20] <takyon> but mostly the nuke is just NK's way of getting a better footing on the world stage and guaranteeing that it won't get attacked
[18:25:47] <cmn32480> if they didn't have the nuclear ambitions... nobody woudl care about them at all
[18:25:48] <takyon> if they created let's say 200 ICBMs they would have enough to be a part of MAD.
[18:26:42] <cmn32480> yup
[18:26:54] <cmn32480> they fire off 1, we can probably (maybe?) shoot it down
[18:27:12] <nick> from their own perspective it cant matter much, it's not like DPRK has a vast array of allies and client states
[18:27:26] <nick> if they have capability, it's a one time deal, if the act then they're done
[18:27:32] <nick> they dont need to destroy the world with it
[18:27:35] <takyon> people have made their entire careers off of guessing whether North Korea's leadership is very rational or very irrational. we're just pissing in the pool here
[18:27:55] * cmn32480 notes that the water IS turning blue
[18:29:04] <nick> i also saw some stuff yesterday that showed how even before north korea existed, it was called the 'hermit kingdom' back in the early 1900's
[18:30:27] <nick> takyon, maybe that's where DJT got his 'we don't want them to know what we're thinking' concept from... sometimes we'll be rational, sometimes we'll be irrational, but you can't guess when
[18:32:08] <takyon> nick: when DJT promises to be unpredictable, people (around the world) believe him. he is genuinely capable of upending long-standing norms. Or at least, that was the thought weeks ago. He has flip flopped on NATO, the wall is nowhere to be found (he gave up on a govt shutdown threat today) and normalized some of his policies.
[18:32:29] <nick> and if irrational nuclear powers are the ones to watch, i'm still more concerned with pakistan
[18:33:20] <nick> i didn't expect DJT to be much different to the norm, just a louder and more brash version of that norm
[18:33:39] <nick> it took quicker to drop the game changer charade and get there than i anticipated

[18:37:42] <nick> my concern at the moment is still rooted in how quickly the press changed their tune on trump after he decided to drop some extra bombs and now they're much more inclined to cheerlead

[18:46:50] <cmn32480> its all trumps fault...
[18:47:41] <nick> i'd say almost none of it is trumps fault, it'd be nice to think it was
[18:48:36] <nick> but i'm pretty sure he doesn't have a time machine to change foreign policy
[18:59:46] <nick> oh sorry, i forgot the position as a brit, the special relationship to cheerlead
