[01:30:15] <charon_> man, i'm calling today the first day of summer.
[01:33:37] <charon_> not because it's warm, which it's not. but becuase it's been crazy busy at work today, in a way that is indicative of summer business
[01:34:24] <charon_> this has been the daily jasassin alert. good evening
[01:36:10] <charon_> #submit https://www.eurekalert.org
[01:36:11] <MrPlow> Submitting. There is a mandatory delay, please be patient.

[01:59:10] <charon_> piss off, MrPlow
[01:59:15] -!- charon_ has quit []
[03:15:22] <Fnord666> howdy charon
[03:18:14] <charon> hiyo Fnord666
[03:18:56] <Fnord666> how've you been?
[03:19:35] <charon> mostly ok. fairly busy at work
[03:19:41] <charon> how about you?
[03:20:16] <Fnord666> pretty good
[03:20:35] <Fnord666> keeping busy and trying to stay out of trouble.
[03:22:23] <charon> there's trouble to be had?
[03:22:37] <Fnord666> Sure, you just have to know where to look
[03:23:17] <Fnord666> jumped to a 2 hour window for tomorrow?
[03:23:40] <charon> yeah, since the sub queue was so sparse
[03:23:51] <Fnord666> cool.
[03:25:27] <charon> i guess i should be finding stories and subbing stuff
[03:25:54] <Fnord666> the queue was nothing but political stuff.
[03:26:13] <charon> yar. i deleted about 6 things
[03:26:32] <Fnord666> I saw that. Appreciated. What do you put as a reason?
[03:26:38] <Fnord666> typically anyway?
[03:27:03] <charon> actually they were all exec/AC/OO so there was no need to put a reason
[03:27:11] <Fnord666> even better
[03:27:15] <charon> yep
[03:27:51] <charon> if you can't even log in to shit all over the front page, you get no rejection notice
[03:28:48] <Fnord666> haha
[03:28:55] <charon> but if i am giving reasons, it's something about how this is not a good article for the site and maybe you can make a journal post
[03:31:11] <Fnord666> I fear that the politics nexus is just going to encourage that type of post with less and less relevance to the site.
[03:32:11] <charon> that's why it's one max per day. but i see what you mean
[03:33:21] <Fnord666> I think at one point we had 5 in the sub queue and had already posted one that day
[03:33:58] <Fnord666> and for the most part they are going to be more time sensitive for relevance
[03:34:37] <charon> see this thread from a few days ago which i participated in: https://soylentnews.org
[03:39:24] <Fnord666> What an ass. I believe that the phrase is "cut off your nose to spite your face."
[03:39:37] <charon> i guess the most relevant comment there is one of the children, the one by urza9814
[03:40:18] <charon> who thinks i'm frightening
[03:40:42] <Fnord666> interesting thing is that by describing what their politicians are doing they geolocate themselves.
[03:41:57] * charon makes a rainbow table of ip hashes
[03:47:55] <charon> #submit http://www.vulture.com
[03:47:55] <MrPlow> Unable to find a title for that page
[03:48:15] <charon> holy balls, what fucking good are you, MrPlow?
[03:48:36] <charon> my kingdom for a bot that can take submissions
[03:48:55] <Fnord666> next time remind them of this part of the FAQ
[03:49:00] <Fnord666> "The simplest way to help the site is by submitting quality stories and leaving interesting comments"
[03:49:09] <Fnord666> highlighting the quality part.
[03:49:11] <charon> heh
[03:49:31] <charon> i spent a lot of time crafting that comment, and i'll bet it never got read
[03:49:46] <charon> maybe i'll make a journal entry
[03:56:36] <charon> "hey you ungrateful fucks. this is how it works. don't be an ass and shut up with the politics bullshit. love, charon"
[04:03:00] <Fnord666> lol
[04:03:24] <Fnord666> sorry, 3d print hit a pause point where I need to change filament colors
[04:06:50] <charon> when you do that is it able to fuse the two colors together?
[04:07:05] <Fnord666> yes.
[04:07:08] <charon> cool
[04:07:46] <Fnord666> I use it when making things like nameplates to switch colors once it gets to the raised lettering the face of the nameplateon
[04:08:02] <charon> so it still appears seamless other than the color change. that's neat
[04:08:17] <Fnord666> There are printers that have multiple colors loaded (typically 2) that can switch between them
[04:08:32] <Fnord666> making things like marbled colorations on prints
[04:09:13] <charon> leopard print
[04:15:35] <Fnord666> some people just color the raised letters with sharpie but I like the color change better with the plastic
[04:21:51] <charon> so how often do you have to change over? just once and it does all of that color?
[04:22:35] <Fnord666> So everything is printed, layer by layer.
[04:23:11] <Fnord666> for dual extruders they can switch colors and do each color part of each layer
[04:23:35] <Fnord666> on a single extruder I have to unload the plastic and load the other color so I don't do prints like that
[04:24:08] <Fnord666> on a name plate or something, you just change colors once when it is done printing the backplate and before it starts the raised lettering.
[04:25:00] <Fnord666> for example raised, contrasting colored lettering on a license plate bracket.
[04:25:48] <charon> i think i see. if it was a more complicated shape with both colors on the same level , you'd be changing constantly
[04:26:27] <Fnord666> exactly. It could be done but it would be a nightmare
[04:26:59] <Fnord666> and the switch is not always real clean when you are taking the plastic completely out and replacing it
[04:35:48] <Fnord666> here's an example piece
[04:35:50] <Fnord666> http://www.thingiverse.com
[04:36:20] <Fnord666> changing the filament color at the lettering will be a lot more durable that a sharpie
[04:37:14] <charon> i see. heh, at first i thought that was a throwing star
[04:37:40] <charon> 3D printer ninja!
[04:38:06] <Fnord666> oh there's plenty of those and a ton of "herb grinders"
[04:39:31] <charon> that's... about what i expected it would be
[04:39:50] <Fnord666> :)
[04:40:25] <Fnord666> often by an author names like "420 Designs"
[04:40:39] <charon> right
[04:41:11] <charon> whoa... did you know george washington grew hemp?
[04:41:46] * charon makes devil horns and headbangs
[04:42:23] <Fnord666> I did not, but it's unsurprising. It's a versatile fiber.
[04:42:26] <Fnord666> http://www.thingiverse.com
[04:42:36] <Fnord666> for an example of a two tone print
[04:43:23] <charon> that's cool looking, but so many points where it could go wrong...
[04:44:38] <Fnord666> With both colors loaded and dual extruders tuned properly, it works out pretty well. oozing, melted plastic isn't terribly precise anyway.
[04:45:26] <charon> i note the word "repaired" in the title
[04:46:19] <Fnord666> That usually has to do with the 3d modeled design where someone has left something wonky in the model and someone else cleans it up
[04:47:05] <Fnord666> different programs used to turn the model into printing instructions handle models differently and a model that's ok in one program may crap out in another.
[04:47:51] <Fnord666> It usually happens when the model as a whole isn't completely "closed" and this can throw other programs for a loop
[04:48:08] <charon> ah. i was assuming it printed badly and needed to be gone after with a soldering iron
[04:50:15] <Fnord666> http://www.instructables.com
[04:50:52] <charon> ffs
[04:50:54] <charon> lol
[04:51:27] <charon> step 1: leave all sanity behind
[04:51:33] <Fnord666> :)
[04:54:48] <charon> in other news, torment is really good
[04:55:47] <charon> i've put in about 10 hours and haven't finished the first city. tons of wildly inventive stuff
[04:56:30] <Fnord666> cool
[04:56:35] <charon> at a guess, around 50 named NPCs with individual dialogue, some of them not even quest related. just there for atmosphere
[04:57:36] <Fnord666> sounds like they've done a good job
[04:57:51] <charon> combat is very rare, you can talk your way out of most combats before they begin
[04:57:58] <Fnord666> just started playing the predecessor
[04:58:07] <charon> but when they do begin, they're fairly tough
[04:58:13] <charon> oh cool
[04:59:45] <Fnord666> sounds like my kind of game.
[05:00:24] <Fnord666> I like combat sequences to be challenging, but I like to be able to have alternative paths through the storyline besides "Slay everything"
[05:01:05] <charon> the planescape one is a bit like that. but there's more combat there than in the newer one
[05:02:19] <Fnord666> It also adds replayability
[05:04:10] <charon> yep
[05:06:19] <charon> the nature of "planescape: torment" allows you to build a monstrously strong main character. walking up to bateezus and oneshot backstabbing them.
[05:08:07] <charon> oh and a tip for "planescape: torment": have a high wisdom. you get a lot more dialogue options
[05:09:23] <Fnord666> good to know.
[05:09:32] <Fnord666> not sure what I did on my current character
[05:12:41] <charon> i stumbled into it by accident, because my first playthrough of any game, i always make a mage-type
[05:14:26] <Fnord666> interesting. I usually go for some rogue type if I can.
[05:15:34] <Fnord666> I'll do a second play thru with a mage but not typically on the first pass.
[05:19:02] <Fnord666> I think I'm going to call it a night. We are good through tomorrow afternoon and we both have subs in the queue if nothing else comes in.
[05:19:13] <Fnord666> Good night charon.
[05:19:23] <charon> good night Fnord666
[05:19:31] <Fnord666> talk to you tomorrow.
[05:19:46] * charon nods
[05:20:04] * charon takes out his herb grinder
[06:11:17] <takyon> TheMightyBuzzard
[06:11:19] <takyon> https://soylentnews.org
[06:11:31] <takyon> or NCommander or paulej72
[10:09:42] <takyon> is it just me or is the site loading super fast
[10:10:11] <takyon> (yes the opposite of "omg the site is slow")
[13:02:57] <Bytram> takyon: TheMightyBuzzard: paulej72: NCommander: It appears that links accessed from the user's messages page should have the &noupdate=1 parameter added, as well. Or, even better, I submit that we *REVERSE* the sense and reporting of things and, instead of a noupdate flag in a URL, add an "&update=1" only in those cases where we DO want the user's last_read_pid for a given story (or whatever it is called) updated.
[13:16:14] <paulej72> yes this will need to be investigated
