[00:00:41] <Bytram> NCommander: clarification please? I'm havin a little trouble trying to grok this:
[00:00:42] <Bytram> <p>With the first hurdle passed, it wasn’t long before another one reeled its ugly head. Unfortunately, shortly after, the system would hang trying to partition /dev/hd0.</p>
[00:01:11] <Bytram> is "another one" the same problem as system hang trying to partition
[00:01:39] <NCommander> Bytram, no, a different problem. First one was dealing with XENIX hiccups rather badly with SeaBIOS.
[00:02:13] <NCommander> (it ends up overriding several data structures it needs in the BIOS. VirtualBox doesn't suffer from this issue)
[00:03:35] <Bytram> It was not clear to me what the first problem was, and a second one is introduced, but could be read as a restart of the description of the first problem.
[00:05:54] <Bytram> I'm up to the point:
[00:05:54] <Bytram> <h3>A 30-Year Old Bug</h3>
[00:06:17] <Bytram> my stomach is growling so I'm gonna make some dinner and then come back it... saving what I've done so far...
[00:06:30] <Bytram> updated.
[00:06:51] <Bytram> so far, only minor typos/punctuation... very well done!
[00:06:54] <Bytram> back soon
[00:26:45] <Bytram> NCommander: okay, I'm back at it... before I forget, there is one screen shot missing: "-- vsh screenshot --"
[00:32:29] <NCommander> Bytram, yeah because vsh broke. I might delete that
[00:32:57] <Bytram> ahh, that 'splains it. okay.
[00:34:09] <charon_> 50 Mhz
[00:43:44] <charon_> do i dare ask where to find the templating code?
[00:44:14] <charon_> or will i be overcome by eldritch mysteries man was never meant to know?
[00:45:44] <Bytram> you may ask, my padawan, but beware you ask of things where mortals should not dare to tread... and certain privs are required to even gaze upon the cursed code.
[00:46:13] <Bytram> =)
[00:47:15] <Bytram> NCommander: finished my first pas through the story. Enjoyed it greatly -- thanks for writing that. I took some liberties with the last paragraph. please check to make sure I did not put any words in your mouth.
[00:54:17] <charon_> Bytram: my sanity has become slightly unhinged just from your response.
[00:55:34] <Bytram> bwa ha ha ha ha!
[00:59:04] <NCommander> templating code?
[01:00:46] <Bytram> my guess is that he wants to delve into our site's templates.
[01:01:14] <Bytram> to my eye, it's just a glorified macro processor.
[01:10:10] <nick> charon_, Bytram, NCommander !! !! !!
[01:10:25] <Bytram> nick: !!
[01:10:53] <nick> too lazy to read back.. how goes?
[01:16:26] <charon_> hiyo nick. things are alright.
[01:16:39] <charon_> and yourself? settled in yet?
[01:17:50] <nick> things are going well... not settled yet... still setting up at the new base, appliances to be delivered tomorrow, internet supposed to be installed monday.
[01:19:47] <charon_> at least you're on the road to getting settled. and your spanish was good enough to make it happen
[01:21:06] <nick> hah, it really wasn't... but luckily i have some people here helping me which has made it possible to get all this stuff done in a couple weeks or so
[01:22:06] <nick> i'm learning a little every day, but my spanish is extremely limited at this point.
[01:22:36] <Bytram> hey there! so glad to "see" you back! If you don't mind my asking, where are you at these days?
[01:23:08] <nick> no one here ever seems to answer a question with a yes or no answer... even as much as i try to make it a yes or no question when i am trying my best
[01:23:21] <charon_> ¿donde está los servicios?
[01:23:49] <Bytram> sea seen your
[01:23:50] <charon_> that's a great phrase to have memorized
[01:24:02] <nick> Bytram, i'm back in uruguay. Going to use this as a base for now.
[01:24:27] <Bytram> nick++ takes some cajones to pull up and move like that -- I'm impressed! Best of luck to ya!
[01:24:27] <Bender> karma - nick: 10
[01:24:39] <nick> lots of places to go and things to do, but i actually have some stability to plan from now, and somewhere to come back to
[01:25:07] <nick> renting a 2 bedroom house here is cheaper than a room in London.
[01:25:23] <Bytram> why am I not surprised?
[01:25:30] <charon_> wild, but not surprising
[01:26:17] <nick> it's a pretty expensive place to be in other respects, but it's a pretty safe and friendly place to be
[01:27:17] <nick> as i think i've mentioned here before, you basically can't get a reasonable car for under $7k... and even if you do pay that $7k it's still going to be 15-20 years old
[01:27:26] <nick> or chinese
[01:28:22] <Bytram> that could be an issue... how is public transportation?
[01:28:34] <charon_> welcome to the chicken bus
[01:28:52] <nick> public transportation is ok.. i've not used it yet
[01:29:39] <charon_> i've ridden public busses in Costa Rica, it was fine if more crowded than my American sensibilites was used to
[01:29:56] <nick> but i don't want to rely on it, there are options... the cheapest being a chinese motorbike for $1k
[01:30:21] <charon_> dunno how Uy compares, but CR has a really good transport system. trains and busses going everywhere for pretty cheap
[01:30:56] <nick> there are some trains, but it's primarily bus... there's a stop down the street from my new place
[01:32:14] <nick> as someone who lived in london and never took public transport maybe 3 times a year... i don't want to start now
[01:32:44] <nick> only take the train if i was going to see some live music of an evening
[01:34:04] <charon_> i've gotten out of the habit of using it myself. but all through my childhood and into my 30s i took public transit a lot.
[01:34:34] <Bytram> afk dishes biab
[01:34:37] <nick> it's good to have the option
[01:36:25] <charon_> yep
[01:39:09] <nick> tomorrow should be fun, while waiting for the appliances to be delivered... going to build a desk
[01:44:07] <charon_> IKEA to the rescue
[01:45:20] <nick> not here... there is some flat pack stuff but the price for what you get is shit, so doing from scratch
[01:45:41] <nick> found a timber merchant nearby, decent prices and good quality stuff so bought everything i needed today
[01:46:55] <charon_> a desk is not too tough. legs, cross-braces, surface
[01:47:29] <nick> it's how ive done the last two
[01:47:40] <charon_> paint garish yellow, and bob's your uncle
[01:47:53] <nick> i'm going to basically build all furniture myself, except the office chair
[01:52:39] <charon_> ok, last trip around the store to make sure work is done. then going home. see y'all in a while
[01:52:58] -!- charon_ has quit [Quit: not working]
[01:55:49] <Fnord666> howdy nick Bytram
[01:56:05] <Fnord666> nick! You've returned to us!
[01:56:16] <nick> hey Fnord666
[01:56:42] <Fnord666> how is everyone this fine Friday?
[01:56:50] <nick> just showin' ya'll i'm still kickin'... hopefully by the end of next week i'll be actually setup and can get back to contributing to the site
[01:57:38] <Fnord666> Sounds like you're getting settled in.
[01:57:55] <Fnord666> s/nds/nds
[01:57:55] * sedctl offers Fnyrd666 a /
[01:58:05] <Fnord666> s/nds/nds/
[01:58:35] <Fnord666> has charon not brought exec back from the far side of the river?
[01:58:43] <nick> seems not

[01:58:59] <sedctl> <Bytram> afk dishe sbiab

[01:59:17] <Bytram> it dounded funnier inmy mind
[01:59:28] <Bytram> Fnord666: welcome
[01:59:33] <Fnord666> Bytram - head cold?
[01:59:45] <Bytram> nothing so glamorous... jus tplain tired
[02:00:36] <Bytram> busy day after a short night, along with keeping up with all the changes on the site after a long stretch of testing prior to the site upgrade rollout...
[02:00:42] <Bytram> things are just catching up with me, that's all
[02:01:08] <Bytram> Fnord666: how are YOU doing?
[02:01:51] <Fnord666> I am doing well. Thanks for asking. The trip into work this morning was dicey for a lot of the staff. Black ice on the bridges meant crashed cars and backed up traffic.
[02:02:24] <Bytram> Yikes!
[02:02:25] <Fnord666> I live fairly close and was not "impacted", but some people's 25 min commute took 2.5 hours.
[02:02:38] <Bytram> Y I K E S ! ! !
[02:03:06] <Fnord666> temps hit that just above freezing point where the added wind under the bridges caused them to glaze over.
[02:03:46] <Fnord666> On the plus side it was quiet for much of the morning and I got a lot done.
[02:03:59] <Bytram> we had a blizzard a few weeks back... my 156 minute comute home from work took over an hour... ended up getting stuck in the apartment building's parking lot. by the time I got home, I was *exhausted* -- driving at 10/10's takes a lot out of you!
[02:04:06] <Bytram> glad you were able to amke the most of the situation!
[02:04:13] <Bytram> *make
[02:04:28] <Fnord666> :)
[02:05:26] <Bytram> I don't recall ever having trouble with black ice, but there was one time when hydroplaning got my attention really quickly...
[02:05:51] <Bytram> pulled a 360 across two lanes of traffic... from the high-speed lane into the breakdown lane
[02:06:12] <Bytram> was able to straighten out okay and then BAM! got rear-ended
[02:06:12] <Fnord666> yeah that sudden "not so connected to the road" feeling wakes you right up with a nice adrenaline shot.
[02:06:31] <Bytram> Fnord666++ understatement
[02:06:31] <Bender> karma - fnord666: 9
[02:06:33] <Fnord666> crap. thought you were going to say you pulled it out and kept going
[02:07:07] <Bytram> actually thought I had pulled it off.. whew! and THEN I got hit.
[02:07:27] <Fnord666> adding insult to injury?
[02:07:54] <Bytram> was on a 3-hour trip and about half-way through. it blew out the rear window in my rav4. Oh, and it was raining really heavy (hence the hydroplaning)
[02:07:54] <Fnord666> you were ok though?
[02:08:20] <Bytram> going back home would take just as long as continuing on, so just kept on going til I got to my folks place...
[02:08:59] <Bytram> my dade and Ipulled things together and patched it up with heavy plastic and was good to go until I got home and could get itprepared proper-like.
[02:09:00] <Bytram> yes, I was okay.
[02:09:07] <Bytram> mostly shaken up, and a couple sore ribs.
[02:09:13] <Bytram> was very fortunate on that one.
[02:09:26] <Fnord666> That's good.
[02:10:00] <Bytram> if there were other vehicles in any of the lanes I spun across, it cold have been "curtains" for me... and others, too.
[02:10:11] <Bytram> *could
[02:10:17] <Fnord666> Very fortunate then.
[02:10:30] <Bytram> very VERY fortunate, indeed!
[02:11:11] <Bytram> seems that no matter what tragedies, trials, or travails I've experienced, they could always have been worse... MUCH worse.
[02:11:39] <Bytram> Considering how many things in my life could have left me dead, I'm kind of surprised I am actually still alive!
[02:12:14] <Fnord666> It's a miracle any of us survive childhood.
[02:12:25] <Fnord666> Let alone the teenage years.
[02:12:25] <Bytram> nod nod
[02:12:33] <paulej72> don don
[02:12:38] <Bytram> oh, yeah. For *sure*
[02:12:46] <Bytram> paulej72: !!
[02:12:52] <Fnord666> hey paulej72!
[02:12:53] <paulej72> hello
[02:13:18] <Bytram> get a chance to relax any today? /me sure hopes so!
[02:13:59] <paulej72> no, it was weekend two of the annual dog and pony show otherwise know as graduate recruiting hosting weekend
[02:14:18] <Fnord666> ugh
[02:14:21] <paulej72> free food though
[02:14:42] <Fnord666> at least that. Beer?
[02:14:59] <Bytram> maybe next year just give them a live demo of a halon system discharge event?
[02:15:04] <Bytram> ;)
[02:15:18] <Fnord666> I bet it leaves them breathless!
[02:15:25] <Bytram> ROFL!
[02:15:58] <Bytram> or gasping at straws?
[02:16:30] <Fnord666> :)
[02:16:48] <paulej72> we dont have halon system, its water
[02:17:06] * Bytram hopes the power goes out before the water comes on
[02:17:27] <paulej72> not sure how that is setup
[02:17:27] <Fnord666> same result, if the doors are watertight and you use enough. Hard on the electronics though.
[02:17:40] <Fnord666> shocking I say.
[02:17:52] * Bytram then remembers capacitors do not necessarily discharge immediately
[02:17:59] <Fnord666> Could be in over their heads.
[02:18:15] <Bytram> gasping *through* straws
[02:18:29] <Bytram> volting for the exits?
[02:18:34] <Fnord666> looking for a breath of fresh air?

[02:19:11] <Bytram> mrpg: hiya!
[02:19:21] <Fnord666> mrpg - howdy
[02:19:48] <mrpg> hi everyone good night
[02:19:51] <paulej72> we did have a power supply go one one of servers, it trigged the one chemical burn odor dectector. That dectector is in the exhaust air space. We had to do a rack by rack inpection to find the burnt up server. It took out the PS the CD drive and some other shit
[02:20:07] * Bytram waits for mrpg to respond "watha", thus providing us with: hiya watha
[02:20:24] <mrpg> watha!
[02:20:28] <Bytram> LOL!
[02:20:37] <Fnord666> there you go
[02:20:57] * Bytram wishes mrpg a good night, as well!
[02:21:21] <Fnord666> paulej72 - just wanted to say that I really like the new site and I really appreciate all the hard work.
[02:21:38] <Fnord666> to both you and TMB
[02:22:03] <Fnord666> and you too Bytram
[02:22:23] <Fnord666> I know you had a lot going on and still got in a lot of testing
[02:22:23] <paulej72> thanks
[02:22:26] <mrpg> claps claps claps
[02:22:36] <Bytram> yep, seems to be holding up okay and it is good to gives folks a few days to acclimate. Seems like mostly *small* things being found atm; paper cuts instead of guillotines
[02:22:53] <Bytram> Fnord666: appreciate the sentiment!
[02:23:49] <Fnord666> funny how seeing behind the scenes a bit makes me appreciate everything we have here even more.
[02:24:05] * Bytram could prolly have spent another month at it before I'd have felt comfortable with going live... but the decision was made with the best information available at the time, and I think, all-in-all, it's been working out.
[02:24:21] <Bytram> Fnord666++ you sure have THAT right!
[02:24:21] <Bender> karma - fnord666: 10
[02:24:47] <Fnord666> meh, if you left it to QA nothing would ever get released.
[02:24:54] <paulej72> well we did a bunch of last minute changes the wee before, but we needed to get this out in februaru
[02:25:01] <Fnord666> There's always one more little thing...
[02:25:07] <Bytram> and we are still hovering in the upper layers. there's the foundational things like IP connectivity, OS, DB, and package maintenance, applying bugfixes, wtc.
[02:25:21] <paulej72> we should have had some more qa on it but we were out of time :)
[02:25:34] <Bytram> If I could turn back time...
[02:26:01] <Bytram> there was only so much time avail in december/jan (peak season for us)
[02:26:08] <Fnord666> We can only go forward and learn from it
[02:26:10] <mrpg> i'm watching the queue, stories 3 and 4 are one hour apart, alert. red alert. spoiler alert.
[02:26:37] <Bytram> and by the time I finally got a handle on what had been implemented and how it was expected to work, had basically run out the clock.
[02:27:05] <Fnord666> thanks mrpg. Good eye.
[02:27:14] <Fnord666> mrpg++
[02:27:14] <Bender> karma - mrpg: 10

[02:29:35] <Bytram> and with that, my friends, I think I'm going to call it a night. tomorrow is another work day and I stayed up too late last night. Maybe tonight I'll do better.
[02:29:40] <Bytram> many thanks for the chat... may you all have a fine and restful evening!
[02:29:50] <Fnord666> ~gnight Bytram
[02:29:58] <Fnord666> get some rest my friend
[02:30:04] <Fnord666> damn lazy bots
[02:30:26] <Bytram> apprecaite the though! and the same to you. watch out for the black ice (and the yellow snow)
[02:30:50] <Fnord666> :)
[02:30:58] <Bytram> ciao for now!
[02:31:02] <mrpg> bye!
[02:31:07] <paulej72> reminds me of the time kermit the frog went to the tshirt store to get his shirt with his name on it. The owner kept bring out shirts with Kermit the Gorf and other missspelling as Kermit says that is the wrong shirt, another person would wal in saying that he was kermit the Gorf and needed his shirt
[02:32:16] <mrpg> :-) let's google it. Let's youtube it.
[02:33:01] <Fnord666> nice
[02:33:31] <charon> mrpg: story timing is intentional. janrinok wants the politics stories be in between normal stories, so they don't replace something else

[02:34:02] <mrpg> charon: aaah ok.
[02:34:09] <charon> hiyo fnord. looks like you showed up just as i left work
[02:35:18] <Fnord666> I did indeed
[02:35:50] <charon> black ice is fun
[02:36:12] <Fnord666> I don't think that word means what you think it means. :)
[02:36:32] <charon> heheh
[02:38:16] <mrpg> don't mind that customer
[02:38:33] <Fnord666> mrpg - you know the responses we are going to get for the seearing story, right?
[02:38:40] <Fnord666> swearing
[02:38:45] <Fnord666> damnit
[02:39:27] <mrpg> hahaha, now that you mention it...
[02:39:31] <charon> of course
[02:40:18] <mrpg> I like shakespeare's insults: you are unfit for anything but hell
[02:40:35] <charon> like the big ben bong story didn't take any time at all to descend to idiocy
[02:40:37] <Fnord666> Hopefully though the underlying story will bring out some interesting comments.
[02:40:55] <Fnord666> oh I knew that one would go south fast.
[02:41:14] <charon> knave, i have done thy mother
[02:41:21] <Fnord666> but the submitted headline was too priceless
[02:42:17] <mrpg> it is not with my eyes that I love thee for they in you a thousand errors see = you are ugly
[02:43:09] <Fnord666> Shakespeare - Second City TV for the Elizabethan Age
[02:43:23] <charon> More of your conversation would infect my brain.
[02:46:02] <Fnord666> Thou elvish-mark'd, abortive, rooting hog!
[02:46:32] <charon> i have never been marked by an elf!
[02:46:44] <mrpg> “I’ll beat thee, but I would infect my hands.”
[02:47:22] <Fnord666> "Away, you three-inch fool!"
[02:47:33] <charon> “You starvelling, you eel-skin, you dried neat’s-tongue, you bull’s-pizzle, you stock-fish–O for breath to utter what is like thee!-you tailor’s-yard, you sheath, you bow-case, you vile standing tuck!”
[02:47:53] <charon> some of those don't quite make sense
[02:49:38] <Fnord666> yes but it's kinda like Animal House. "The Germans?" "Forget it, he's on a roll."
[02:51:21] <mrpg> Would thou wert clean enough to spit upon
[02:52:03] <charon> that one is pretty harsh, mrpg
[02:52:07] <Fnord666> Shakespeare really tossed away what little subtlety he had in the histories
[02:52:15] <Fnord666> how about "Thou art a boil, a plague sore"
[02:53:00] <Fnord666> and "Poisonous bunch-backed toad!"
[02:53:04] <charon> “Thou art as fat as butter.” is just bit prosaic
[02:53:20] <charon> the only response is, "so?"
[02:54:31] <mrpg> ¿So go to the pan and let the fire do away with you?
[02:55:03] <mrpg> so let your greasy form be away from me
[02:55:09] <mrpg> hahaha
[02:55:48] <Fnord666> “The tartness of his face sours ripe grapes.”
[02:56:28] <mrpg> Thou hast no more brain than I have in mine elbows
[02:56:28] <Fnord666> “Thine face is not worth sunburning.”
[02:56:58] <Fnord666> “Thou leathern-jerkin, crystal-button, knot-pated, agatering, puke-stocking, caddis-garter, smooth-tongue, Spanish pouch!”
[02:57:48] <Fnord666> “Your brain is as dry as the remainder biscuit after voyage.”
[02:57:57] <charon> accurate
[02:58:19] <Fnord666> Feels like it sometimes on a Friday.
[02:59:18] <charon> woo, i figured out how NC did the pictures in articles
[02:59:51] <Fnord666> Crayon?
[03:00:29] <charon> probably egg tempra
[03:00:45] <Fnord666> which article? I assume it's related to the upload section in the edit page
[03:01:58] <charon> close, it actually seems to be the text link "Attach File" just about "Intro Copy"
[03:02:06] <charon> above
[03:03:38] <charon> i can't seem to make the upload file button do anything that i can see
[03:14:19] <Fnord666> presumably then the attach file gives you the uri to the resource once it's uploaded?
[03:14:32] <charon> yes
[03:15:09] <charon> and if you miss it, too bad. because i see no way to list previously uploaded files
[03:20:33] <Fnord666> paulej72 - any attempt to detect that a file upload is a duplicate and just return the URI for the previous copy?
[03:21:09] <charon> maybe someone with higher permissions can get a real return from blob.pl
[03:23:01] <Fnord666> IF the resource is stored with a level of indirection in between you can run a periodic process to detect duplicates and redirect the second to the first at the redirection layer.
[03:24:16] <charon> aww, <embed> is not allowed
[03:24:17] <Fnord666> if that makes any sense
[03:25:08] <charon> it does, but that means the server has to check hashes for every new file?
[03:26:52] <Fnord666> Could be or it could just store the resource temporarily with a new entry in the backend. A nightly program could run through looking for duplicates, make the updates to the redirection table, then clean up the now unreferenced image.
[03:31:20] <charon> nope, no embedding video, it seems. unless it's upload first, maybe. which i'm not willing to dp
[03:34:37] <Fnord666> probably just as well
[03:35:36] <charon> rickrolls for everyone
[03:36:17] <Fnord666> :)
