[00:20:07] <Fnord666> biab. Time for supper.
[00:21:22] <charon_> enjoy
[00:51:01] <takyon> hi
[00:52:55] <Bytram> takyon: hi
[00:52:57] <Bytram> =)
[00:53:13] <takyon> this hpcwire exec submission is so damn long lol
[00:53:49] <charon_> good evening, gentlemen
[00:54:27] <takyon> I gotta post some stories because charon's been taking "a load" lately
[00:54:35] <Bytram> ~gday takyon
[00:54:36] * exec hurriedly offers an undersized chest of imitation bacon bits to takyon
[00:54:41] <Bytram> ~gday charon_
[00:54:43] * exec problematically blows a bongload of active directory at charon_
[00:55:46] <Bytram> I just read this article -- YIKES! https://arstechnica.com
[00:55:48] <exec> └─ 13Watershed SHA1 collision just broke the WebKit repository, others may follow | Ars Technica
[00:56:44] <Bytram> this is inreference to: https://security.googleblog.com
[00:56:46] <exec> └─ 13Google Online Security Blog: Announcing the first SHA1 collision
[00:57:07] <Bytram> which, in turn, references this site: https://shattered.it
[00:57:08] <exec> └─ 13SHAttered
[00:57:13] <takyon> we already posted it
[00:57:19] <takyon> I in fact deleted a dupe sub about it
[00:58:02] <Bytram> oh/ NICE!
[00:59:40] <Bytram> yes... and no.
[00:59:52] <Bytram> what we ran wsa notification of the existence of the collision.
[01:00:14] <takyon> I believe it contained a link to shattered.it
[01:01:01] <Bytram> the first link Iposted notes how posting both of those PDFs to the webkit SVN repository... 'killed' it and it had to be taken offline for repairs... SVN did not handle the SHA1 collision well.
[01:01:49] <Bytram> so, this is more about how , instead of having to pay $100,00+ to create a collision, someone took these colllision files, checked them into an SVN repositor, and it went kablooey.
[01:01:53] <takyon> I need to be taken offline for repairs
[01:02:25] <charon_> interesting
[01:02:42] <charon_> the SHA collison thing, that is
[01:03:19] <Bytram> same here! I am wiped out...I so want to beat on the updated comment threading code and am just totally out of energy. Worked until store closed last night, didn't get home til after 10pm, and was back before the store opened this AM... and woke up 3 times during the night.
[01:03:38] * Bytram needs more wax for the candles he is burning at both ends
[01:04:05] <charon_> that's no fun. you need overtime pay when you do a clopen
[01:04:27] <Bytram> I would appreciate it, but we only get OT for working > 40hrs/week.
[01:05:29] <charon_> same here. if wishes were horses...
[01:05:29] <Bytram> NOTE: the shatterd site, https://shattered.it has been updated:
[01:05:32] <exec> └─ 13SHAttered
[01:05:34] <Bytram> Is SVN affected?
[01:05:34] <Bytram> Yes - please exercise care, as SHA-1 colliding files are currently breaking SVN repositories. Subversion servers use SHA-1 for deduplication and repositories become corrupted when two colliding files are committed to the repository. This has been discovered in WebKit's Subversion repository and independently confirmed by us. We noticed that in some cases, due to the corruption, further commits are blocked.
[01:05:51] <Bytram> which links to: https://bugs.webkit.org
[01:06:04] <Bytram> I think there is a typo in that and it should be just:
[01:06:13] <Bytram> https://bugs.webkit.org
[01:06:17] <exec> └─ 13Bug 168774 – Add a test verifying cache deduplication is not sensitive to SHA1 collision attack
[01:06:32] <charon_> if SHA1 has been deprecated for a while, why is this breaking them?
[01:06:39] <exec> └─ 13Bug 168774 – Add a test verifying cache deduplication is not sensitive to SHA1 collision attack
[01:06:58] <Bytram> deprecated == you should probably stop using this
[01:07:05] <Bytram> people have not stopped doing this
[01:07:18] <Bytram> and, there is existing stuff out there that has not [yet] been updated.
[01:08:47] <charon_> i guess i assumed tech-y folks would see that it was insecure and not use it instead of holding on until the bitter end
[01:09:35] <charon_> but people are busy, forgetful, lazy, etc
[01:10:20] * Bytram is a people, too, and can admit to having done all of those things at one time or another
[01:11:07] <charon_> how dare you!
[01:12:31] <Bytram> the discussion thread at webkit.org seems to focus on problems caused by trying to store both PDFs in the repo - which caused a SHA1 collision - and which, in turn caused SVN to blow up. The currently considered workaround is to check in a ZIP of each file, then each can be extracted to a file, unzippped, and use the resultant file in the webkittest.
[01:28:50] <charon_> i am in the wrong line of work
[01:29:28] <charon_> i find it very difficult to not get annoyed at idiots and "customer is always right" jerk-offs

[16:43:03] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya know, we should make a FakeNews nexus and populate it with onion style stuff.
[16:43:16] <cmn32480> great more work for the editors
[16:43:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> you kiddin? you wouldn't have to verify shit.
[16:44:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> ugh, i don't wanna edit my changelog post again.
[16:45:03] <cmn32480> we can add it later at the touch of a script....
[16:46:07] <TheMightyBuzzard> no i mean i need to edit for clarity.
[16:46:50] <cmn32480> oh
[16:46:55] <cmn32480> that woudl be the author's fault
[16:46:55] <TheMightyBuzzard> i apparently wasn't 100% clear that the comment modes changes were primarily for the purposes of speeding page rendering up.

[16:49:45] <cmn32480> seeing as it won't get used this year most likely
[16:50:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya, it has been right fucking nice for february
[16:50:16] <cmn32480> seriously
[16:50:25] <TheMightyBuzzard> went and got chilly again here last night though
[16:50:32] <cmn32480> tossed the kids outside about an hour ago and told them not to come back 'till they were hungry
[16:50:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> har
[16:51:10] <cmn32480> they'll come back mid afternoon sometime... slathered in mud with scraped knees and a huge smile
[16:51:14] <TheMightyBuzzard> roomie's too much of a helicopter parent for that. thinks they need adult supervision to ride their bikes around the neighborhood
[16:51:34] <cmn32480> no issue there long as tehy stay in the yard adn woods behind the house
[16:52:12] <cmn32480> what I ought to be doing is configging the firewall for work... but it is way too nice for that
[16:52:13] <TheMightyBuzzard> ya. i was dragging my four and six year old brothers around thirty acres of woods at eight years old
[16:52:42] <cmn32480> my 8yrold does same with his siblings
[16:53:06] <cmn32480> far better for them to be outside running around in the woods on a day like this then in front of vidya
[16:53:09] <TheMightyBuzzard> roomie'd insist on going along and bringing a gun. it's sad.
[16:53:39] <cmn32480> I'd consider it.. if they let me play in the mud w/ them
[16:53:45] <TheMightyBuzzard> zactly
[16:54:22] <cmn32480> only ting I gotta teach them is to identify Poisopn ivy...
[16:54:33] <cmn32480> and to stay the fuck away from iot
[16:54:49] <TheMightyBuzzard> should have seen us after we found this little spot where the mud was 3' deep. we come home literally coated head to toe in drying mud.
[16:54:49] * cmn32480 has apparently got an allergy to it
[16:54:59] <cmn32480> NOICE!
[16:55:06] <cmn32480> sounds like a fun day
[16:55:23] <TheMightyBuzzard> epic, yep. cept for having to strip outside and get hosed off.
[16:55:29] <cmn32480> duh?
[16:55:42] * cmn32480 remembers having that happen once or twice
[16:55:47] <TheMightyBuzzard> not something you consider at 8.
[16:55:53] <cmn32480> and the water that was warm in the hose ran out all too quick
[16:56:23] <TheMightyBuzzard> not that we'd have abstained from the mud bath. we just would have jumped in the pond afterwards.
[16:56:29] <cmn32480> lol
[16:57:23] <TheMightyBuzzard> anyway. nicotine->nap->ninth edit
