[15:20:35] <takyon_> np
[15:22:30] <cmn32480> hows thigns today janrinok
[15:22:57] * cmn32480 sends S a note to shorten the leash so all you can hit is the space bar
[15:24:05] <janrinok> lol - a busy day this morning with various chores that needed to be done on a Friday, but this afternoon is much quieter, fortunately.
[15:24:31] * cmn32480 checks his crystal ball
[15:24:45] * cmn32480 sees a cup of tea in your future
[15:30:53] <janrinok> unfortunately not, as it is getting very close to the nurse's arrival time, and then I will have to start to prepare dinner....
[15:31:13] <cmn32480> and you are not allowed tea while cooking?
[15:31:20] <cmn32480> S stands for slave driver
[15:35:25] <janrinok> I'm normally too busy to enjoy a cup of tea when cooking. I enjoy my time in the kitchen and like to ensure that everything is just right, so I have to be very organised. But I also realise that I have to manage my time and relaxation, so I plan the meal preparation to be as quick as possible.
[15:35:53] <cmn32480> and what fine delicacy are we preparing this evening?
[15:35:59] <janrinok> That gives me more time to relax after the meal and to enjoy talking to friends on IRC, and cmn32480
[15:36:29] * cmn32480 asks because he is thinking about lunch, and knows that he has a roast beef sammich and an apple to hold him until dinner
[15:36:40] <takyon_> I made that pulled pork
[15:36:54] <takyon_> low prep time, high cook time, makes lbs
[15:36:57] <cmn32480> w/ the 16 gallons of orange marmalade?
[15:37:27] <takyon_> I did that last time, just did crushed tomatoes and vinegar and spices this time
[15:37:43] <takyon_> but yeah, I could use the marmalade to make maybe... 80 lbs of pulled pork
[15:38:39] <cmn32480> yum
[15:38:56] <cmn32480> janrinok usually makes things of a more refined pallet...
[15:38:58] <janrinok> I remember, and I wish I could have tasted it too. But S has some dietary requirements so I have to be careful what I prepare. Tonight is crab, with a faux vegetable cous-cous, and roast sweet potato.
[15:39:23] <janrinok> brb - nurse has arrived
[15:39:25] <takyon_> is it sugar or gluten you have to be worried about?
[15:39:41] <cmn32480> 80lbs of pulled pork... that'd keep JR eating for a couple months!@
[15:40:59] <takyon_> I can make about 4 lbs in my dutch oven at one time, and probably need just a ~pint of sauce and a cup of vinegar to make it. and I have a couple gallons of sus
[15:41:50] <cmn32480> mmmmmm
[15:41:52] <cmn32480> sounds yummy
[15:56:05] <janrinok> takyon, gluten is a no-no, but being wheelchair bound means that I have to take great care of her weight. So far she is doing OK but people in w/chairs have a tendency to put on weight. She also has to have a higher proportion of veggies than I would normally choose for myself.
[16:00:37] <takyon_> make okra
[16:01:02] <janrinok> we like okra - but it isn't on sale in rural France very often.
[16:01:21] <janrinok> gtg and do some cooking! Back on later
[16:01:31] <cmn32480> have fun and save me some!

[18:33:42] <cmn32480> now I'm all hungry again...
[18:33:44] <cmn32480> thanks a lot
[18:34:57] <janrinok> no problem, you can eat as soon as you get here
[18:35:18] <cmn32480> might have to eat between now and then
[18:35:43] <janrinok> now don't go spoiling your appetite ...
[18:35:56] <cmn32480> yes dad...
[18:37:00] <cmn32480> I got a summons for jury duty
[18:37:25] <janrinok> I bet they find you guilty!
[18:37:59] <cmn32480> prolly... even though I''m doing the deciding, not being decided on
[18:38:21] <janrinok> that's what they tell everyone!
[18:38:28] <cmn32480> think it's a ruse?
[18:38:34] <janrinok> don't you?
[18:38:44] * cmn32480 is a little unsure now
[18:38:51] <janrinok> did anyone mention malicious damage to a fork lift truck?
[18:39:11] <cmn32480> that was the guys I chased out the fence!
[18:39:35] <cmn32480> how many times do we need to make this story up to get it right?????
[18:39:49] <janrinok> sure, you can deny on here - but maybe your boss has had a rethink. Have you had a pay rise? Have you been given a holiday?
[18:40:17] <cmn32480> no medals either
[18:40:21] <cmn32480> :-(
[18:40:38] <janrinok> Look, I'll vouch for you and even be a character reference, but to be fair that might not work in your favour ...
[18:41:03] <cmn32480> and you can easily ignore the summons to court... being a foreigner and all
[18:41:25] <janrinok> exactly - but if I do come I'll bring the crab cakes with me
[18:41:36] <cmn32480> we'll that makes it all worth it then
[18:41:41] <janrinok> I don't suppose I can hide a file in one ...?
[18:41:50] <cmn32480> it'd be a VERY small file
[18:42:16] <janrinok> look, if you are going to get choosy all of a sudden, I won't bother with any file
[18:42:41] <cmn32480> I don't think the paper and manila folder will fit in the crab cake is all...
[18:42:51] <cmn32480> but if they will that is some SERIOUS crab cake!
[18:42:54] <janrinok> you haven't seen my crab cakes!
[18:44:36] <cmn32480> http://darkroom.baltimoresun.com
[18:44:39] <cmn32480> so that's you?
[18:45:14] <janrinok> shit! I stand back and salute that guy
[18:45:42] <cmn32480> I droll on his giant crab cake and eat the whole damn thing myself
[18:46:24] <cmn32480> oddly enough, that is actually from the local paper here, and is a picture form a local streeet festival
[18:46:55] <cmn32480> didn't realize it until I pulled the link
[18:47:17] <janrinok> that looks real nice
[18:47:27] <cmn32480> looks a lot like too much binder
[18:47:56] <cmn32480> but for somethign that big, I'm not too surprised
[18:48:18] <janrinok> it would collapse with any less I would imagine
[18:48:34] <cmn32480> likely.. but think of all that yummy yummy crab
[18:48:45] <janrinok> and the cost
[18:49:01] <cmn32480> I don't like to think about those kind of things while dreaming of food
[18:49:12] <cmn32480> but yeah... JEEPERS!
[18:52:05] <cmn32480> how have you been sleeping?
[18:52:13] <cmn32480> still 6 hours or better?
[18:53:21] <janrinok> much better but not everynight. Probably about 60-70% of the time I get a really good sleep, but othertimes it just doesn't seem to work. Can't find a pattern or identify any particular cause, but overall I am feeling better than I was.
[18:53:44] <cmn32480> that's good
[18:53:52] <cmn32480> I'm glad you are feeling better
[18:54:05] <cmn32480> I was starting to get a little worried about you for a while
[18:55:03] <janrinok> well, I've got to have a 24hr ECG early in March, and some other tests between now and then, as they are still concerned about what the possible cause could be.
[18:55:23] <janrinok> I'm still on a 'take it easy' regime
[18:55:37] <cmn32480> and S is snitching to the doc at every opportunity no doubt
[18:56:26] <janrinok> well, she is keeping me in reasonable check, but knows that I have to do some things just to be happy
[18:57:46] <cmn32480> so then I guess we won't be seeing you on IRC anymore....
[18:57:53] <cmn32480> if you are trying to do stuff to be happy
[18:58:10] <cmn32480> 'cuz we are quite the curmudgeonly bunch
[18:58:13] <janrinok> I enjoy associating with _some_ of the people on here
[18:58:24] <cmn32480> well.. then I'll leave you alone then
[18:58:29] <janrinok> lol
[18:59:30] <janrinok> are you still looking for alternatives to your present employment, any leads?
[18:59:55] <cmn32480> yes and no, and not really
[19:00:08] <cmn32480> if I leave now, they are compeltly fucked, adn I can't do that
[19:00:30] <janrinok> understood. Any chance of more help?
[19:00:39] <cmn32480> also, they are letting me bring in somebody with experience, and that will help my workload significantly, and cut my travel
[19:01:02] <cmn32480> since my Jr. wireless guy quite a couple weeks ago... the cheese stands alone, so to speak
[19:01:10] <cmn32480> I've had a couple good leads on people.
[19:01:49] <cmn32480> but even the ones that know some of what I need are projects.
[19:01:58] <janrinok> hope you find someone, I suspect the whole family would like to see more of you
[19:02:04] <cmn32480> not enough (or any) experience in the hard part of the job
[19:02:08] <cmn32480> yeah
[19:02:16] <cmn32480> I'm just not sure I'd like to see them all the time
[19:02:18] <cmn32480> :-)
[19:02:34] <cmn32480> it has been nice being home the last couple months
[19:02:44] <janrinok> it is the same for me, and S understands, sometimes I just need a bit of 'me' time
[19:02:50] <cmn32480> I haven't been on an airplane since November.
[19:03:14] <cmn32480> J is starting to wonder if I got fired adn just haven't told her
[19:03:39] <janrinok> hey, as long as the money keeps coming in why should she worry?
[19:04:26] <cmn32480> lol
[19:04:33] <janrinok> how are the kids?
[19:04:34] <cmn32480> I could be turnign tricks on the corner...
[19:04:42] <cmn32480> kids are doing pretty well
[19:04:45] <janrinok> no you couldn't - look in a mirror
[19:04:59] <cmn32480> we are on the way to getting thing 1's digestional issue straightened out finally
[19:05:06] <cmn32480> OUCH
[19:05:09] <janrinok> great news
[19:05:19] <cmn32480> yeah.. been FAR too long

[19:10:49] <cmn32480> it'll be nice to get out.. even in the cold
[19:11:32] <janrinok> we're going through storms and rain at the moment, for the next few days at least. Should be a little better next week
[19:12:16] <cmn32480> could be worse....
[19:12:20] <cmn32480> least it isn't snow!
[19:13:01] <janrinok> snow is rare because we are on the coast and that helps considerably. If we get snow it rarely lasts more than 24hrs
[19:13:19] <cmn32480> heh
[19:13:25] <cmn32480> you saw the pictures from last year?
[19:13:38] <cmn32480> when we got nearly 1m of snow inside 24hrs?
[19:13:44] <janrinok> yep - I don't envy you that

[19:14:19] <cmn32480> shoot... look at nick.. hes' in the UP and at one point had 3m+ on the ground
[19:14:40] <janrinok> well, skiing is good in the French Alps from Nov through to April, but we are much more temperate here
[19:15:32] <cmn32480> and you get fresh seafood year round
[19:15:45] <janrinok> yup
[19:16:33] <cmn32480> I'm a little jealous of that

And you can tell that by the fact that he's stocked his cabinet with Goldman Sachs alums, has signaled that he wants to dismantle the post-crisis rules reining in banks, and will now allow brokers to go back to giving their clients deliberately bad advice.'

[21:19:18] <nick> National Economic Council Director and former Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn explained, because it's "like only putting healthy food on the menu" due to the fact that "unhealthy food tastes good but you still shouldn't eat it because you might die younger." So, to extend that analogy, your retirement advisor is now free to tell you to eat the financial equivalent of junk food that might give you a heart attack, but will definitely give him a
[21:19:18] <nick> bigger bonus.
[21:25:49] <nick> ... in other news
[21:25:59] <nick> can we please refrain from the type of headline as used in the Tesla story
[21:26:26] <nick> anyone with a vague understanding of the situation would have an idea what it's about
[21:26:29] <nick> no fucking excuse for clickbait
[21:26:59] <nick> both source articles have better headlines

[23:00:56] <charon_> hiyo empty channel
[23:01:39] <nick> just me here, ranting into the big internet void
[23:04:18] <charon_> reading backscroll. i read a NYT article about the rule change you referred to earlier. so much for "draining the swamp"
[23:22:11] <charon_> damn, jasassin is the worst/best spambot ever
[23:22:51] <charon_> he's about 75% of the talk in #soylent
[23:34:42] <nick> i keep coming back to draining the swamp as creating swamp juice from concentrate...
[23:35:16] <nick> drain that shit, bottle it, add some extra water and sell it back to you.. and now it's magically better for you, less swamp and more swamp at the same time
[23:37:35] <TheMightyBuzzard> can't really trust the NYT on politics. their leanings are way too blatant. unfortunately you can't trust trump either.
[23:39:16] <nick> the 'swamp' has done pretty well for trump over his career, which is why i'm waiting for him to bring back that 'audit the fed' rhetoric now he's actually in the chair
[23:39:18] <charon_> not sure how you can spin: Trump wants to repeal law that says Financial advisors need to put their customer's interests first
[23:39:38] <nick> but it appears so far, that it's the one policy aspect he will suddenly learn how to talk and act like a politician in
[23:40:32] <charon_> speaking of which, where are we on a Political Nexus?
[23:40:54] <nick> i'm looking forward to the talk of 'co-operation, unrivalled expertise and the valuable independence' of the fed and associated institutions
[23:40:57] <charon_> seems like it's half the goddamned subs lately
[23:41:46] <TheMightyBuzzard> charon_, it'll come live when the site upgrade does. maybe tomorrow. all depends on when pj has time to update stuff.
[23:42:28] <charon_> oh cool. i was afraid the nexus would be another upgrade after this big one
[23:43:05] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, a script to add a nexus is part of this update. i just gotta flip one bit to make it NOT also post to the front page.
[23:43:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> nick, me, i'm utterly unconcerned. if obama can't send us down in flames trump certainly won't.
[23:44:22] <TheMightyBuzzard> i mean he's not doing anything all other politicians ever didn't do. he's just not trying to hide it.
[23:45:05] <nick> TheMightyBuzzard, still early days, but i can only see it as the inevitable conclusion to the situation we're in, he's symbolic and going to do things the others may not have gotten away with
[23:45:38] <TheMightyBuzzard> nah, he'll get away with less cause he's not adept at political sneakiness.
[23:45:55] <nick> but it does make me laugh some of the shit i see... how just around the corner he's going to end the fed and bring back the gold standard.
[23:46:17] <charon_> the gold standard? hahahahahahahah
[23:46:53] <chromas> He'll switch us from the USD to Bitcoin by Trump
[23:47:04] <chromas> TRUMPcoin
[23:47:13] <nick> TheMightyBuzzard, it's still early days... i'm trying to not get too deep into the predictions and trajectory right now... taking things as they come
[23:47:18] <charon_> y'know, there's a conspiracy theory saying all the gold that is supposed to be in Fort Knox is actually missing
[23:47:19] <TheMightyBuzzard> i haven't given that enough thought to have an opinion on it right yet but it am NOT in favor of fairy-jizz-based currency
[23:47:33] <nick> i might have a more coherent view in 6 months
[23:47:40] <chromas> It doesn't do anything just sitting in a locked room
[23:47:48] <TheMightyBuzzard> our money is literally based on nothing except that people use it a lot.
[23:48:06] <nick> but right now, from my limited exposure, it seems to be working well... it's placated the large groups of people who were alienated by the political rhetoric of the last administration
[23:48:16] <TheMightyBuzzard> yup
[23:48:39] <TheMightyBuzzard> by the utter contempt of the last administration and the neglect of the previous one.
[23:49:28] <TheMightyBuzzard> i should go fire up the charcoal. i might wanna eat before bedtime.
[23:49:37] <Bytram> TheMightyBuzzard: "our money is literally based on nothing except that people use it a lot." -- disagree. there is that little matter that one must pay one's taxes in dollars, and if you don't the full weight and power of the US Govt can be brought to bear (eventually) to help you to understand, so to speak/write.
[23:49:38] <nick> probably a smart move
[23:50:07] <chromas> Isn't that part of using it a lot?
[23:50:16] <nick> Bytram, that's the same as any national currency though... which they're all based on not much except the threat of violence from state institutions
[23:50:17] <TheMightyBuzzard> Bytram, nah, they'll happily take property.
[23:50:54] <TheMightyBuzzard> just don't pay them in dollars and see if they don't.
[23:51:10] <nick> the usd is based on more than that though, if you don't accept USD in international trade, you can expect sanctions or worse.
[23:51:14] <Bytram> true that, but if you try and pay with, say, pesos or bitcoin... methinks they'd say something to the effect YOU go and do the currency conversion and come back when you have some US dollars.
[23:51:42] <chromas> Gaddafi.mp4
[23:52:02] <nick> and the petrodollar thing as well, which was an important replacement for the gold standard
[23:52:10] <TheMightyBuzzard> right but if you say "here's some gold instead" they'll likely send an accountant type out and take some of it off your hands.
[23:53:33] <charon_> well, anyone can decide they are willing to accept any payment. the government does not force you to accept dollars if you don't wish to
[23:53:44] <TheMightyBuzzard> nod nod
[23:53:47] <nick> USD is the most easily spendable currency though... most places in the world accept USD cash
[23:54:00] <charon_> if my business only took chickens as payment, and people were willing to bring me chickens, i'd be fine
[23:54:30] <TheMightyBuzzard> yup. i despise it as a means of trade though. inflationary currency is teh debil.
[23:54:30] <nick> mmmm chicken
[23:54:33] <Bytram> I'm not willing to try, but methinks they'd just say YOU seel the gold for dollars and give us the money. if you refuse to pay, they will, as a last resort, take your stuff and sell it (prolly without any great effort to get maximum value) and, after depriving you of you property, still expect you to pay for the rest. And if you do not allow them to take your stuff, there's a good chance that they can muster more firepower to take it
[23:54:34] <Bytram> than I can do defend against that.
[23:54:55] <Bytram> hmmm, food? Lunch was way to long ago... me needs to eat; biab
[23:55:08] <TheMightyBuzzard> oh ya, charcoal. stop distracting me.
[23:55:18] <charon_> i should have used rutabegas in my example
[23:55:42] <nick> and if you did, no one would do business with you :p
[23:56:07] <nick> now trade in chicken, keeping bacon reserves.... you'll do well
[23:57:07] <nick> pay your taxes in bacon wrapped chicken breasts
[23:58:16] <charon_> lol
