[10:56:17] <cmn32480> Wreaths Across America Event at Arlington National Cemetary with the Cub Scouts
[11:22:17] <cmn32480> and ... cancelled due to icy roads
[11:23:11] <FatPhil> thanks obama!
[11:28:51] <FatPhil> From the only trip I made to america in the early 90s, the only visual memories I have are of Arlington, the Vietnam war memorial and the Washington monument.
[11:29:48] <cmn32480> sounds about right FatPhil
[11:29:59] <cmn32480> 2 of 3 are very moving experiences
[11:30:20] <cmn32480> emotionally, I mean... the Washington Onument moves you vertically
[11:30:29] <FatPhil> very
[11:31:13] <FatPhil> I'm mostly a pacifist, thet moved me to tears
[11:32:13] <cmn32480> the Washington Monument does that to me too... but I'm afraid of heights
[11:33:26] <cmn32480> it's been years since I was in Arlington
[11:33:30] <FatPhil> the only reason it stick out in my memory is that I tried to do a silly false perspective photo of it.
[11:33:52] <cmn32480> but the Wall is a very emotional place for a lot of people
[11:34:33] <FatPhil> but I wasn't using an SLR, so the monument stuck out of my mate's chin rather than his mouth.
[11:34:36] <cmn32480> one of the guys I work with makes a pilgrimage there once or twice a year... he says it is to visit with old friends
[11:35:36] <cmn32480> he spent a tour in vietnam during the war
[11:36:25] <FatPhil> g/f's parents are both USAF, Korea-era.
[11:36:57] <cmn32480> they have a memorial as well... just a different kind of haunting
[11:37:26] <FatPhil> her dad had a veterans trip to Arlington and other monuments earlier this year.
[11:38:16] <FatPhil> tears were shed, I'm sure.
[11:38:19] <cmn32480> first time he'd been there?
[11:38:37] <cmn32480> hell makes me wanna cry.. I cna't imagine what it is like for guys that were there
[11:39:13] <FatPhil> he's been to the pentagon for meetings, but don't know if he had time for other things
[11:39:31] <cmn32480> gotcah
[11:39:43] <FatPhil> and this is why I'm mostly a pacifist.
[11:40:23] <FatPhil> but if tanks start rolling west from st petersburg, I'm picking up a gun.
[11:40:41] <cmn32480> I think that is the position of most...
[11:40:56] <cmn32480> the minute you threaten my home, it's on like Donkey Kong

[22:10:12] <cmn32480> 'zactly
[22:10:14] <nick> i was invited to spend the holidays here, and i'm making the most of all the 'merican hospitality and good(bad) foodings
[22:12:21] <Fnord666> That was kind of someone.
[22:13:04] <nick> it was, especially as i didn't have much else to do, and it's actually somewhat cost effective as i miss out peak tourist season in SA
[22:14:02] <nick> trying to find a better more permenant base in SA was proving difficult as the better rental properties were counting on tourist season prices rather than longer term lets
[22:14:09] <Fnord666> prices vary that much eh?
[22:15:06] <nick> when you need somewhere that's at least somewhat furnished, it does... the places will probably be empty most of the time, but they can apparently get away with charging $100(US) a day for a reasonable house with some furnishings/appliances
[22:17:17] <nick> but i do now have a local representative who is working on things for me, so it should be a lot easier on my return
[22:17:35] <Fnord666> That sounds like a good way to go.
[22:18:17] <nick> there is method to my madness
[22:19:12] <Fnord666> but is there a madness to your method?
[22:19:23] <nick> absolutely
[22:20:39] <nick> trying to make the most of where i am now with doing reading and researching, am hoping to do a lot of writing next year, possibly video-documentary type stuff too
[22:46:50] <Fnord666> Apologies, had to take a call. What sort of writing do you do?
[22:51:25] <nick> following my general interests, business/economics, media trends and geopolitics
[22:51:58] -!- crutchy [crutchy!~crutchy@119.17.wmi.rzn] has joined #editorial
[22:52:11] <nick> i've spent the last year toying with the idea of writing a book that touches on those 3 topics, but i'd like to make it more accessible
[22:56:57] <Fnord666> Sounds ambitious.
[22:58:35] <Fnord666> Are you going for a broader view or something very focused on the situation/world today?
[23:01:37] <nick> to make it engaging and informative is challenging, to construct a compelling narrative whilst avoiding bias or oversimplifying. i'd like to go with a broader view of i'd guess the last few decades
[23:03:25] <nick> but it's important not to lose context and act as if modern history has a cut-off like that or began at one particular event
[23:04:19] <Fnord666> Sounds like a good balance.
[23:04:45] <Fnord666> Detail wise I mean.
[23:06:24] <nick> but as i said, i'm leaning to doing shorter articles and some video, as opposed to going more long form... short attention span for me and any potential audience
[23:06:28] <Fnord666> I'm sure you'll find a theme or topic that emerges during the writing that, when traced backwards, provides a good place to start.
[23:08:09] <nick> the advantage of working in the format i'm thinking about is it doesn't matter if i start at the wrong place, easier to add revisions and update
[23:09:01] <nick> the couple ideas im working on now are not directly connected or chronological, if you know what i mean
[23:09:39] <Fnord666> Are they correlated at all?
[23:10:52] <nick> sure, but that would be another thing in itself which is part of the interesting thing about doing it. as you said, tracing it back
