[03:20:47] <takyon> why such cold feet on the gawker story
[03:28:06] <Bytram> did you check the scroll back? JR raised some concerns
[03:33:12] <Bytram> I share some of them atm; my thinking is the story is prefaced with some kind of summary mentioning the possible ramifications of being able to find a 'backer' who can finance your suit, you can quite possibly out-lawyer whomever you are suing

[17:37:57] zz_janrinok is now known as janrinok
[18:05:03] <cmn32480> janrionok
[18:05:06] <janrinok> here
[18:05:08] <cmn32480> janrinok
[18:05:11] <cmn32480> \me to
[18:05:14] <cmn32480> wassup?
[18:05:26] <janrinok> have you seen the Hulk Hogan story? Any thoughts?
[18:06:02] <cmn32480> I have some thoguhts
[18:06:07] <cmn32480> minimal at the moment
[18:06:22] <cmn32480> it think the story is significant for a couple reasons
[18:06:29] <cmn32480> the Peter Thiel connection
[18:06:52] <cmn32480> and the way that the lawsuit was worded to require the site to pay, not their insurance
[18:07:10] <cmn32480> it is effectively a way to shut down a website that you don't like.
[18:07:51] <nick> there's not enough stories about that man.
[18:07:56] <janrinok> to me, the way it is written doesn't mention any of that. It reads of someone having the sex tape published and being funded by another rich person in litigation.
[18:08:02] <cmn32480> I think THAT is the significant part, as opposed to the whose sex tape it is
[18:08:15] <janrinok> OK, but the story doesn't say any of that
[18:08:38] * cmn32480 will have to reread the whole thing
[18:08:53] <cmn32480> I looked at it briefly the other night and got the gist
[18:10:00] <cmn32480> what I outlined above is where I think the significance is
[18:10:53] <cmn32480> the subs don't touch on any of that
[18:11:03] <janrinok> the second sub goes into more detail but the first is sub is about the sex tape and Theil being outed - neither of which seem of interest to our audience. If the fact that this is an attempt to bankrupt Gawker, then that is what the headline and main thrust of the story should be about, in my view
[18:11:23] <cmn32480> i woudl agree
[18:11:59] <cmn32480> I'm boenign paged to gt the grass cut
[18:12:11] <janrinok> lol - welcome home!
[18:12:28] <cmn32480> <sigh>
[18:12:40] <cmn32480> any other questions I can answer before I get paged wiht a frying pan?
[18:12:59] <janrinok> no, you have far more important things to do. Give my best to J
[18:13:06] <cmn32480> I will
[18:13:09] <cmn32480> be safe
[18:13:13] <janrinok> cul8r
[18:13:19] <cmn32480> and give S and your weed garden my best!
[18:13:28] <janrinok> likewise, will do
[18:13:47] <janrinok> nick, any other views?
[18:14:10] <nick> not really, generally agree
[18:15:14] <janrinok> I suppose it could go out as weekend fodder - although I wouldn't want to be the one to release it as it is currently written
[18:27:00] <CoolHand> janrinok: that's cable is a dupe isn'tit
[18:27:13] <CoolHand> for the one currently live?
[18:27:36] <janrinok> don't know - I look again....
[18:27:47] <janrinok> yep - I'll bin it, thanks

[18:30:04] <takyon_> hi janrinok
[18:30:10] <janrinok> how's things
[18:30:39] <takyon_> pretty good
[18:30:51] <takyon_> I might have a lot to do this week
[18:30:56] <janrinok> that's good to hear. Got any plans for the weekend?
[18:31:18] <takyon_> might have to take a visit to a recycling center
[18:31:34] <janrinok> donating or dumpster diving?
[18:31:41] <takyon_> diving, practically
[18:32:04] <janrinok> what are you looking for?
[18:32:14] <takyon_> aluminum cans
[18:32:28] <janrinok> shouldn't be too difficult then
[18:32:36] <takyon_> they can't be crushed though
[18:32:58] <janrinok> so you want to make an aluminium tube?
[18:33:14] <janrinok> or use them a sheet ali?
[18:33:15] <takyon_> someone wants to make a bench out of them
[18:33:20] <janrinok> lol
[18:33:36] <janrinok> that could be a lot of diving
[18:33:46] <takyon_> it's only 500-1000 cans
[18:33:55] <janrinok> 'only' he says....
[18:35:19] <takyon_> I think the Gawker story should run, but I'm a bit biased :D
[18:35:38] <janrinok> yeah, we had a chat just up the page.
[18:35:50] <takyon_> I'm willing to switch my name to editor if you guys are uncomfortable with it
[18:35:55] <janrinok> about 20-30 mins ago
[18:36:44] <janrinok> I think the final consensus was that it just needs to emphasize the Theil buying 'justice' rather than what the case is claimed to be about
[18:36:56] <takyon_> I'm glad someone submitted the NASA asteroid detection criticism story
[18:37:21] <takyon_> I don't think my summary said too much about Hogan at all, it was mostly about Thiel
[18:37:39] <takyon_> not that we didn't have an entire previous story on Hogan winning the case
[18:39:05] <janrinok> no but the other sub goes into detail of the sex tape aspect and Theil being outed. I'm sure that news if available elsewhere if people think it important. In my opinion - and it is only that - it just needs a bit of rejigging.
[18:40:08] <janrinok> Bytram|away, marty was going to have a look at it but if he is too busy, I can take it on tomorrow am
[18:40:11] <takyon_> I did a fair bit less quoting than Gravis. he was lazy. trimming can happen
[18:41:13] <janrinok> would you be happy with that?
[18:41:43] <takyon_> that's fine. weekend slots suck more but I'm sure it will get attention either way
[18:41:53] <takyon_> we have some good subs in the queue
[18:42:05] <takyon_> like that NASA one seems pretty interesting
[18:42:23] <janrinok> its obviously a bigger story in the States than here in Europe - I can find no other agency reporting it over here
[18:43:10] <janrinok> but sex tapes and gay name-calling don't get the same attention perhaps here...?
[18:43:57] <takyon_> to put it this way
[18:46:02] <takyon_> Gawker the 'media outlet' elicits some strong feelings. A lot of people are glad to see it possibly going into bankruptcy. The Hulk Hogan and sex tape involvement is just massively entertaining. The publishing of a sex tape as protected "journalism" makes it a free speech debate. The involvement of Thiel is interesting both from the standpoint of checking out how wealthy backers are helping to fund litigation in return for profit and satis
[18:46:56] <janrinok> yes, I can see the money buying 'justice' angle
[18:47:15] <takyon_> our community since we report on the guy all the time. He's a Silicon Valley billionaire VC, tried to pay students to drop out of college at one point, has crazy libertarian projects, etc. Also the Register article mentions he is involved with a media freedom organization
[18:47:59] <takyon_> one article we didn't publish but was subbed by Hugh Pickens mentions that Peter Thiel has a "life extension" regimen...
[18:48:17] <janrinok> you are getting buffer overflow, but I've got the gist of it
