[22:14:42] <Bytram> well, THAT was fun.
[22:14:56] * Bytram Tried to upgrade his hexchat client
[22:15:07] * Bytram downloaded new version
[22:15:11] * Bytram tried to install it
[22:15:24] * Bytram got error, msvcrt140.dll not installed
[22:15:56] * Bytram searched and found where on MS' website could download it... apparently needed to grab the ENTIRE VC++ runtime
[22:16:09] * Bytram invoked the install
[22:16:35] * Bytram waited nearly 90 minutes for it to resolve dependencies and finally complete install
[22:17:06] * Bytram noticed that it said it was done, but still had a core pegged at nearly 100%
[22:17:22] * Bytram waited. and waited. and waited.
[22:17:36] * Bytram finally gave up and rebooted
[22:17:44] * Bytram tried to install hexchat again
[22:17:56] * Bytram no complaints this time.
[22:18:03] * Bytram launched hexchat
[22:18:10] <Bytram> and... I'm finally back in business.

[22:21:07] * chromas installs loonix in Bytram's box
[22:21:35] * Bytram discovers 1600 custom batch programs no longer runs
[22:21:41] * Bytram glares at chromas
[22:22:04] * chromas gives Bytram wine
[22:22:24] * Bytram does not drink
[22:22:26] <Bytram> ;)
[22:22:33] * Bytram appreciates offer
[22:22:48] * Bytram has an Ubuntu vm, but is not the same
[22:23:09] <chromas> apparently I don't have wine installed anymore. I'll have to reinstall it and see if it comes with a cmd.exe (or how hard it is to get the real one to work)
[22:23:23] * Bytram really would like to have a separate box on which he can port his progs to and develop/run them in parallel
[22:23:56] <Bytram> frankly, I'd heard about wine many times, but never once thought about running cmd.exe on it
[22:24:33] <Bytram> I have some scripts that use some really obscure features of cmd.exe to get things done... wonders how faithfully it would run?
[22:25:08] <chromas> Instead of porting the scripts, you could write a script to do it :)
[22:25:31] <chromas> Then you'd have to test and tweak it by converting your existing scripts over and over
[22:26:37] <Bytram> oh, that is already in plan!
[22:27:26] <Bytram> I have a pretty consistent format for my scripts' layouts... but there are more than a couple, I fear, where I failed to finish cleaning up quick-and-dirty to follow my personal standards
[22:27:46] <Bytram> also, many of them are wrappers around other tools, such as espeak (text-to-voice), and the like
[22:29:15] <Bytram> and... I have one quite of programs which downloads department(s) schedule(s) from internet and merges them into a single schedule for each week -- is a beast developed over the past 8-or-so years with many many nested subprograms.
[22:29:37] <Bytram> if I can get THAT working, the rest of them should be pretty straightforward.
[22:30:10] <Bytram> problem is, I can't afford to have that not working for any extended period... so, would need to port/test/debug in parallel.
[22:31:02] <chromas> run all the tools in wine :D
[22:31:17] <chromas> looks like wine does have a cmd.exe of some sort
[22:34:13] <Bytram> nice to hear, but that 'of some sort' gives me the willies.
[22:35:09] <Bytram> I suspect there are alternatives, now, but at the time, I was using every single trick I could find in order to get some of my batch programs to do what I wanted them to.
