[01:53:49] <takyon> one of you liked that Cat smartphone with the thermal camera huh?
[01:55:12] <takyon> it looks so RUGGED and PROFESSIONAL
[01:55:41] <takyon> I think existing smartphones may be able to do that but I'm not sure
[01:56:11] <takyon> nonetheless, improving a smartphone is all about adding more newly cheap sensors, so expect to see more of the thermal camera
[01:57:40] <cmn32480> cat smartphone?
[01:57:43] <cmn32480> what'd I miss?
[01:58:04] <Bytram> I was impressed with the capabilities and milspec ratings, but I suspect it'll be larger and heavier than the average person wants to put in their pocket.
[01:58:11] <cmn32480> bytram !!
[01:58:12] <cmn32480> takyon !!

[01:59:50] <takyon> don't worry, it was strictly rhetorical

[02:00:00] <Bytram> So what did Owens borrow now?

[02:01:35] <Bytram> didn't think of it the last time, but if you are ever without tea in your room again, maybe the concierge, or room service could help you out, next time.
[02:01:48] <Bytram> get back to where you once belonged
[02:02:18] <takyon> tea? given cmn32480's habits I'll have to recommend a different product

[02:03:25] <cmn32480> that shit makes me jittery
[02:03:46] <Bytram> never tried those, and do not plan to.
[02:04:10] <cmn32480> all caffeine in pill form makes me jittery
[02:04:54] <takyon> well at least you've admitted to trying it
[02:05:05] <Bytram> just add water? :P
[02:05:17] <takyon> that'd probably be disgusting
[02:05:24] <cmn32480> remember the days of Ripped Fuel?
[02:05:35] <cmn32480> caffeine and ephedra
[02:05:46] * cmn32480 used to bounce off the walls
[02:05:52] <takyon> I think I remember that, FDA banned that?
[02:05:57] <cmn32480> the ephedra
[02:06:17] <cmn32480> I think it was used to make meth
[02:06:21] <takyon> I hear most diet supplements just throw caffeine in there along with the bullshit
[02:08:10] <cmn32480> prolly
[02:08:43] <cmn32480> ash taking off steel toed boots feels so good tat the end fo the day
[02:09:06] <Deucalion> I remember years back getting pseudoephedrine nose drops from the pharmacist to treat a hay fever runny nose. Very effective in that regard. Odd side effects in becoming hyperactive and elevating heart rate though.
[02:09:38] <takyon> and becoming a smurf
[02:10:10] <Deucalion> I don't recall turning blue or donning a blue hat.... but I guess I may have missed that

[02:14:48] <takyon> I don't think I have the attention span to do a Mobile World Congress submission. Same as CES
[02:15:03] <takyon> because in my heart I know it is boring consumerism
[02:15:36] <Deucalion> but, but.... shineyyyy :P
[02:15:37] <takyon> maybe I'll do a sub on the chips of MWC. like the Snapdragon 820 and the Imagination 8something GPU
[02:15:40] * cmn32480 is trying to edit more than one story today before falling asleep at the keyboard
[02:16:02] * cmn32480 read MWC as MDC and was gvery confused

[02:17:22] <cmn32480> lol
[02:18:22] <takyon> I meant to type "No." not "NO."
[02:18:31] * Bytram helpfully gives cmn32480 a poke in the ribs to help him stay awake
[02:18:57] <takyon> don't you realize your poke traveled at the speed of light over IRC?
[02:19:02] <cmn32480> better a poke in the ribs than a punch in the face
[02:19:07] <takyon> now cmn32480 needs a hospital

[02:22:02] <takyon> yeah I saw that
[02:22:22] <takyon> I kinda doubt it... comes after 20 years of studies looking for dangers of EM

[02:23:30] <cmn32480> at some point
[02:23:53] <cmn32480> I vaguely recall a brain cancer study that came up wiht notihng
[02:24:38] <takyon> YEAH THEY WERE SO FOCUSED ON PEOPLE HOLDING UP THE PHONE TO THEIR FACE, THEY FORGOT ABOUT IT SITTING IN THE POCKET FOR HOURS, BEAMING RADIATION INTO THE BALLS

[02:26:33] <takyon> oh ok
[02:26:54] <takyon> I heard that SpaceX wanted a large % of their rocket landings to be successful this year
[02:27:13] <cmn32480> large percentage meanin 100%?
[02:28:25] <takyon> more than 0% in the case of barge water landings
[02:28:35] <Bytram> SES == Société Européenne des Satellites
[02:28:35] <cmn32480> heh
[02:28:58] <cmn32480> I think we are going to bin this mobile phone cooks sperm article

[02:29:45] <cmn32480> Deucalion - I am a lotta things. I'm pretty sure "wise" isn't one of them.
[02:30:09] <takyon> now I don't know if I read the sperm article on soylentnews or google news first
[02:30:09] <Deucalion> wisdom does not recognise wisdom :D
[02:30:44] <Deucalion> wisdom realises that there is no wisdom... only experience.
[02:31:00] <cmn32480> very wise Deucalion
[02:31:10] <Deucalion> wow... that got a bit matrixy there
[02:31:30] <takyon> the correct term is "Whoa."
[02:32:32] <Deucalion> I use my own terms... and I declare "wow" to be correct in my parlance. :P
[02:33:03] <Bytram> hmm, what is the female analog to a count?

[02:39:11] <chromas> Use "PC Police" ;)
[02:39:15] <takyon> haha
[02:39:24] <Deucalion> Yeah, we should aspire to somewhere above gutter level.
[02:39:45] <cmn32480> gutter++
[02:39:45] <Bender> karma - gutter: 1
[02:39:55] <cmn32480> woudl that be drainage ditch?
[02:42:06] <takyon> i submitted some articles as anonymous coward, can you guess which?
[02:42:34] <cmn32480> the ones from thestack.com?
[02:42:40] <takyon> nah
[02:42:45] <Deucalion> the word is used more frequently here in relation to the U section pipework at the edges of sloped roofs that captures rain water. But historically, it was used in relation to U section channels in the ground that directed kitchen water to the sewers.
[02:43:50] <Deucalion> Not so much a ditch as a channel lined with fired clay or concrete.
[02:44:17] <cmn32480> the trail to the sanitary sewers
[02:47:20] <Deucalion> hmm.. in a way. Gutters are mostly used for "grey water" (kitchen sink water / rain water / washing machine outflow). Sanitary sewers (toilets) are classified differently. In many places the two flows are kept separate in others the two flows merge when they hit the sewer.
[02:47:50] <cmn32480> here that all runs to the sanitary sewer
[02:47:59] <cmn32480> they meet up in the house someplace
[02:50:41] <Deucalion> Depends on area here - some places have separate sanitary and grey water sewers all the way back to the water / waste treatment site. Connecting your roof gutters to the sanitary sewer or v.v. in those areas receives a dim view a.k.a. fines.
[02:50:42] <Bytram> we are currently undergoing an expensive sewer / storm drain separation project. storm drains and sewers, at one time, apparently went straight out into the ocean. then a treatment plant was added. then heavy rains overflowed the plant and sent raw sewage back into the ocean when it overflowed. solution is to separate storm drains from sewers. that's a lot of digging, and big pipe laying and labor.
[02:51:01] <Bytram> lol
[02:51:02] <Bytram> break time
[02:51:40] <cmn32480> where I live, storm drains and sanitary sweres are separate
[02:51:51] <cmn32480> but sanitary is all waste water from the house
[02:52:30] <Deucalion> makes sense... ground run off is far simpler to treat and release than poopy water.
[02:52:41] <Bytram> yep, that is what we are aiming to get to, but was providing the historical explanation for why they did not do it in the first place.
[02:52:47] <cmn32480> ground run off is dumped to the nerest body of water
[02:53:17] <cmn32480> at least where I live
[02:53:54] <Bytram> you'd thnk it wold be benign, but it's amazing how much oils, rubbers, and other such get washed off a road and into the storm drains.
[02:54:09] <Bytram> never mind just plain trash.
[02:54:16] <Bytram> ok, break time; biab
[02:56:32] <cmn32480> binned the hugh pickens $100 bill story as a dupe

[02:57:05] <Deucalion> Makes no odds to me... I live next to a big river... at some point that river ~will~ overflow on me as I live in the historical flood plain... when it does both the grey water and poopy sewers will spew their contents all over the place :/
[02:57:37] * cmn32480 is clearing the hold queue
[02:57:56] <Deucalion> This is what insurance and a working car are for... leave the area while it happens, insurance picks up the tab.

[03:06:45] <Deucalion> Complete myth of course, but singletons like to extend its life from time to time. something, something.... once she has your wallet, no need for the wedding tackle. etc. ad infinitum. ~sigh~
[03:07:16] <cmn32480> <giggle> you called it wedding tackle

[13:36:50] <Bytram|away> quick note: I was reviewing this story: https://soylentnews.org
[13:36:51] <NotAnymore> ^ 03Error
[13:37:04] <Bytram|away> "Researchers Use 3D Printing to Make Ultrafast Graphene Supercapacitor"
[13:37:38] <Bytram|away> and the added text by the author is as I see it, umm, 'not even wrong':
[13:37:45] <Bytram|away> "on the order of millimeters" is quite large for supercapacitor electrodes, isn't it? And wouldn't a structure on the order of one-thousandth of a meter make it one million times under-qualified to feature in a publication called Nano Letters?
[13:38:35] <Bytram|away> I'm striking it from the story, but am utterly unable this am to come up with something to replace it with. Here's hoping someone who is more awake can do so.
[13:38:43] <Bytram|away> The story is due to come out at: 2016-02-23 14:43:00
[13:39:36] <Bytram|away> so, in just about an hour or so.
[13:43:02] <Bytram|away> ok, I'm adding this:
[13:43:03] <Bytram|away> <p>This would obviously have applications in mobile phones as well as wearables and IoT devices, but what other applications would this empower? Would this have application in automotive applications? -Ed.
[13:43:41] <Bytram|away> It is DEFINITELY not great, but it'll do for now -- please update/replace if you have something better!
