[00:56:05] <Bytram|away> http://go.theregister.com
[00:56:07] <exec> └─ 13What's going on with X.org? Desktop software body could lose domain • The Register
[01:03:17] <chromas> They'll have to register xorg.org
[01:04:09] <Bytram|away> lol
[01:05:25] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[01:05:34] <Bytram> looks like xorg.org is already taken
[02:15:57] <Bytram> cmn32480: !!
[02:16:14] <cmn32480> bytram !!
[02:16:16] * Bytram just noticed an off-by-ten-hour blunder on his part
[02:16:21] <cmn32480> DOH
[02:16:27] <Bytram> how's things, fine sir?
[02:17:13] <cmn32480> holding on by my fingertips today
[02:17:17] <cmn32480> but I'm still here
[02:17:29] <cmn32480> I actually need to get the trash gatherd for put out in the morning
[02:17:45] <Bytram> so, today was one of those weeks?
[02:17:53] <cmn32480> 'zactly
[02:18:10] <Bytram> {{{ cmn32480 }}}
[02:18:18] <cmn32480> just a long day
[02:18:19] <Bytram> hope tomorrow goes better for ya
[02:18:22] <cmn32480> partly of my own making
[02:18:22] <Bytram> nod nod
[02:18:27] <cmn32480> thanks :-)
[02:18:30] <Bytram> that makes it even worse!
[02:18:43] <cmn32480> yeah
[02:19:05] <cmn32480> one of those "I can't concentrate, even if it hit me with a 2x4 in the back of the head" kind of days
[02:19:29] <Bytram> being entirely seriously, at the time, did you do the best you could, with what you had, with where you were at?
[02:19:40] <Bytram> I s there last night
[02:19:45] <Bytram> s/s/was/
[02:19:47] <exec> <Bytram> I was there last night
[02:20:09] <cmn32480> yes... but if I had stopped playing video games an hour earlier it woudl have been betterer
[02:20:19] <Bytram> lol
[02:20:33] <Bytram> now THAT's honesty! The absence of the intent to deceive
[02:25:01] <cmn32480> the only one I would be deceiving is myself... and I know the truth
[02:26:11] <Bytram> I suspect that is part of the reason why we 'click' so well, we are of like minds on that point.
[02:26:22] <cmn32480> probly
[02:26:26] <Bytram> honest IS the best policy
[02:26:36] <cmn32480> and if I wasn't honest my wife'd kick my ass
[02:26:44] <Bytram> especially in my line of work...
[02:27:00] <Bytram> Honesty is the key to sales; once you can fake that, you've got it made!
[02:27:10] <Bytram> ;)
[02:27:50] <cmn32480> lol
[02:28:28] <Bytram> I wish I could take credit, but I read something along thoselines many years ago.
[02:29:09] <Bytram> on second thought, I suspect the word was 'integrity' instead of 'honesty'
[02:30:40] <cmn32480> either way there is a certain amount of truth
[02:31:00] <cmn32480> I don't think I write a lot of checks...
[02:31:21] <cmn32480> ther register in my check book has a calendar from 2002
[02:31:53] <Bytram> orly?
[02:32:17] <Bytram> maybe instead of checks, just use radio buttons instead?
[02:32:29] <cmn32480> yes
[02:32:50] * Bytram notes that was horribly bad joke but could not resist; partly to see if it made enough sense for someone else to 'get' it.
[02:33:38] <Bytram> well, I filled the story queue as best I could; the three remaining stories in the submissions queue are either 'meh', or entirely political.
[02:34:51] <cmn32480> the gloab resistance one makes no sense to me
[02:34:59] <Bytram> had a way-too-short night last night.
[02:35:03] <Bytram> agreed.
[02:35:08] <cmn32480> bin it?
[02:35:24] <cmn32480> get in line!
[02:35:28] <Bytram> if you were to propose deleting it, I would not disagree.
[02:35:36] <Bytram> ninjad
[02:35:45] <cmn32480> POOF
[02:35:53] <cmn32480> and it goes back to the ether from whence it came
[02:36:12] <cmn32480> the other two... both kinda meh... straight politics
[02:36:20] <Bytram> POOF? Wasn't that the name of a magic dragon? ;)
[02:36:30] <cmn32480> I thouht that was Puff?
[02:36:33] <Bytram> agreed. poof poof.
[02:36:42] <Bytram> it was
[02:36:54] <cmn32480> bin 'em both?
[02:36:59] <Bytram> nod nod
[02:37:05] <cmn32480> POOF POOF
[02:37:14] <cmn32480> and we have a desolately empty queue
[02:37:17] <Bytram> oh what a relief it is
[02:37:32] <cmn32480> that's plop plop fizz fizz
[02:37:46] <Bytram> with stories in the story queue to last us until about 14 hours from now.
[02:37:54] <cmn32480> yeesh
[02:38:18] <Bytram> yes, I know... I am having a horrible case of wanting to punify everything atm
[02:38:46] <Bytram> I expect we'll have at least 10 stories submitted by noon tomorrow.
[02:39:09] <Bytram> the community is pretty good about filling in when they see how low the queue is
[02:39:42] Bytram is now known as Bytram|away
[02:39:51] <cmn32480> ~gnihht bytram
[02:39:53] <Bytram|away> i've slept way too little the past two nights;
[02:39:59] <cmn32480> ~gnight Bytram|away
[02:40:00] * exec prematurely passes a cheap plastic cup of Debian to Bytram|away
[02:40:02] <Bytram|away> gonna try and head to bed early tonight.
[02:40:09] <cmn32480> sweet dreams
[02:40:37] * Bytram|away hopes you get a good night's rest, as well -- does so much to improve one's attitude towards the day
[02:40:51] <cmn32480> truer words have never been spoken
[02:41:00] <Bytram|away> it 'de-burdens' things
[02:41:04] <cmn32480> it does
[02:41:08] <cmn32480> go get your rest
[02:41:18] <cmn32480> I'm gonna 2nd and garbage and bed myslef
[02:41:22] <Bytram|away> so, get THEE to bed, soon!
[02:41:41] <Bytram|away> appreciate the feedback and the chit chat...
[02:41:44] <Bytram|away> oh, one thing.
[02:41:47] <cmn32480> sir?
[02:41:52] <Bytram|away> there's a part time worker at my job
[02:41:59] <Bytram|away> she covered a shift i our dept tonight
[02:42:11] <Bytram|away> she's also like a branch mgr at a credit union
[02:42:12] <cmn32480> stole all the watches?
[02:42:28] <Bytram|away> was chatting with her and telling her a bit about my background
[02:42:30] <cmn32480> embezzeled all the money?
[02:42:38] <Bytram|away> come to find out, they had JUST hired a new IT manager
[02:42:52] <cmn32480> DOH
[02:42:54] <Bytram|away> if she had known of my background, it would have been mine for the asking
[02:43:01] <cmn32480> double DOH
[02:43:18] <Bytram|away> the guy they hired really doesn't know that much, but they'd been looking for 2 1/2 months and are going to train him
[02:43:21] <cmn32480> banks are tough man
[02:43:31] <Bytram|away> yeah, the HOURS!

[02:43:45] <Bytram|away> no biggee.
[02:43:53] <cmn32480> my cousin is a bank IT manager.
[02:44:12] <cmn32480> it's pretty in depth
[02:44:19] * Bytram|away worked at IBM and had IBM Confidential Restricted copies of certain docs; each one was numbered and accounted for.
[02:44:23] <cmn32480> keep in contact, if the kid doenst' work out....
[02:44:43] <Bytram|away> well, the job is no longer avail, but if that guy doesn't pan out...
[02:44:57] <cmn32480> 'zactly
[02:45:01] <cmn32480> go to bed!
[02:45:05] <cmn32480> you've earned it
[02:45:06] <Bytram|away> anyway, wanted to pass along the thought to someone who would do more than just say "that's nice"
[02:45:11] <Bytram|away> nod nod
[02:45:14] <Bytram|away> snore snore
[02:45:18] <Bytram|away> ;)
[02:45:19] <cmn32480> zzzzzz

[13:22:10] <cmn32480> coolhand - I split the hugh pickens story into 2 paragraphs
[13:22:40] <cmn32480> i had trouble reading it as a single.
[13:31:38] <CoolHand> cool
[13:31:52] <CoolHand> can u verify grav wave article in subs is dupe? then we can delete.
[13:32:15] <CoolHand> cmn32480 !!
[13:34:28] * nick yawn
[13:34:37] <CoolHand> nick: !!
[13:34:43] <nick> CoolHand: !!
[13:34:52] <CoolHand> s'up? how ya doin?
[13:35:18] <CoolHand> top of the mornin to ya :)
[13:36:11] <nick> afternoon now
[13:36:33] <nick> went to a couple jobs, have a mysterious system that works for 10 minutes then falls over for no reason
[13:36:39] <CoolHand> oh, yeah, it would be
[13:36:57] <CoolHand> nick: those are always fun...
[13:37:12] <nick> not sure if the equipment is faulty out of the box, or the person who tried to install it at first broke it
[13:37:23] <nick> bad connections, cables crushed against metal backplates
[13:37:45] <CoolHand> yuck.. at least you have some possible reasons
[13:37:58] <nick> not even my job, i just went to try and solve problems for someone else who decided to leave the country for a month
[13:38:17] <nick> but he'd got his usual bunch of rogues to do the installation initially
[13:38:51] <nick> so, after 10 minutes i got it working, 10 minutes later, it stopped working, another 2 hours fucking around, working every so often
[13:39:08] <nick> nothing else i could do
[13:39:14] <CoolHand> it's always best if those that will do the maintenance in the future do the install, they have vested interest then..
[13:39:20] <nick> when it would work, then 2 minutes later, without changing or touching anything, stops working
[13:40:04] <nick> is trainee/apprentice/unexperienced electricians doing data and video stuff
[13:40:06] <nick> it never ends well
[13:41:14] <CoolHand> probably the trainee/apprentice/unexperienced part that is the issue.. REAL electricians would at least not be smashing the cables, etc... (speaking as a former industrial electrician)
[13:41:31] <nick> yeah
[13:41:50] <nick> i'm sure it wouldn't have happened if the boss had done it, the one who called me in
[13:42:04] <nick> he's had so much trouble with the guys he has working for him
[13:43:25] <nick> but that's exactly why i dont take people on, because they can't be trusted in general
[13:43:54] <CoolHand> yeah, people.... fargin iceholes..
[13:44:03] <CoolHand> :)
[13:44:16] <nick> and i'm a very relaxed and understanding person with work, but i just cant trust my reputation with someone else
[13:45:12] <nick> only a couple of people i do trust and recommend, but they're not tech based, building/carpentry and such...
[13:45:21] <nick> so no help for the majority of my work
[13:45:49] <nick> and especially now, with the amount of DOA equipment i've been getting over the last couple years
[13:47:00] <CoolHand> they sure don't make them like they used to...
[13:47:51] <nick> they do, just not much, and it costs 2x as much as it used to
[13:48:13] <CoolHand> yeah.. probly true
[13:48:24] <nick> but yeah, i'd like to think it's just me being a cynical douchebag, but for the decade prior
[13:48:30] <nick> i never had anywhere near as much faulty equipment
[13:48:48] <nick> was something that happened a couple times a year at most
[13:48:52] <nick> not at least one thing on every job
[13:49:40] <nick> i think i should go nap before i have to go again
[13:49:47] * nick hat tip
[13:49:55] <CoolHand> have a good one nick

[21:24:57] <nick> US boats and sailors surrendering to Iran? I mean really, in what context could that happen?

[21:26:07] <cmn32480> please second
[21:27:47] <cmn32480> iran would have to have overwhelming superirity
[21:27:51] <cmn32480> or have disabled the boats
[21:27:59] <cmn32480> and threatened to sink them w/ all hands
[21:28:47] <nick> updated, changed it a little bit
[21:28:57] <cmn32480> okie
[21:29:18] <nick> it already went live before the changes, heh
[21:29:19] * cmn32480 likes your changes
[21:29:29] <nick> :)
[21:31:55] <nick> i wouldn't bother submitting a story like that again if you're just going to accept it yourself anyway
[21:32:14] <cmn32480> updating
[21:32:30] <cmn32480> I couclnd' find the "new story link"
