[01:16:18] <takyon> checkity
[01:27:07] <Bytram> makeity?
[01:27:17] <Bytram> ugh.
[01:27:22] <Bytram> mate-ity
[01:27:45] <Bytram> afk brb
[01:42:09] <Bytram> back
[01:58:47] <Deucalion> Bytram, how are you this fine evening?
[01:59:03] <Bytram> okay thanks... and you?
[02:00:00] <Deucalion> burning the midnight oil again - otherwise fine I guess.
[02:00:28] <Bytram> nodnod
[02:00:42] <Bytram> maybe if I do that enough times it will help you to nod off?
[02:00:44] <takyon> might make some more subs
[02:01:35] <Bytram> takyon: I saw your comment a while ago here asking about links in the google fiber story... did you find out what you were lookoing for?
[02:01:48] <takyon> let me think about that
[02:02:02] <takyon> I was wondering why they were being posted in here after the story was already committed I think
[02:02:19] <Bytram> I was trying to flesh out a meager submission which mentioned only San Diego and I quickly discovered that google fiber was being considered in Louisville and Irvine, too.
[02:02:45] <takyon> it's spreading
[02:02:59] <takyon> I remember keeping an inordinately close eye on goog fiber back when it was announced
[02:03:00] <Bytram> my connection was even more terribly slow than normal, so i was taking a stab at altering URLs to locate info on the other cities
[02:03:26] <Bytram> I like the idea of fiber, don't like the idea of google watching everything I do on it.
[02:03:36] <takyon> https://fiber.google.com
[02:03:37] <Schwifty> ^ 03Expansion Plans – Google Fiber
[02:03:47] <takyon> that's an easy one
[02:04:13] <takyon> first off, I wouldn't assume that Google would "watch everything you do" being your ISP
[02:04:24] <takyon> you could confirm that by checking their privacy policy
[02:04:55] <Bytram> about a month or so ago, I discovered that there's an ISP in the next town over who apparently is installing gigabit fiber to that city's High school and middle schools... and along the route people can sign up, too... for $70/month!
[02:04:57] <takyon> and if you compare them with companies like AT&T with its Room 641A...
[02:05:13] <Deucalion> Bytram, I have been a night owl as long as I can remember, I like the quiet of the night, tis peaceful... no background hubbub. I think I'd be better suited to AssEnd, Nowhere, OH than the SE of my fine country. :/ Or I was born in the wrong century - I think I came out with slippers on :D
[02:05:18] <takyon> second, you can use a VPN
[02:05:25] <Bytram> that goes about 150 meters from where I grew up!
[02:05:52] <takyon> treat it as a cost, get a $5/month VPN that would be faster than free alternatives
[02:06:07] <takyon> so you're not putting your google fiber waterfall through a hose
[02:06:21] <Bytram> Deucalion: I share the preference for peace, but I tend to prefer to find it in the AM, when things are starting to awaken, rather than slowing down to slumber.
[02:06:38] * Bytram never used a VPN before.

[02:08:34] <takyon> that story is about 2 days old, don't think we've seen a sub on it
[02:10:14] <Bytram> nod nod
[02:10:37] <Deucalion> Bytram, I like the blue hour on summer mornings also - everything goes silent in that hour, then the sun crests and the birds go mad... as do the humans I suppose. That quiet is restive - good time to go for a stroll.
[02:11:07] <Bytram> then you know of what I speak (umm, write!)
[02:12:19] <Bytram> takyon: I've found this site to be strangely captivating: http://eyes.nasa.gov

[02:12:38] * Bytram wishes that there were links there to each of the sats' project pages.

[02:12:56] <Bytram> =)
[02:13:07] <Bytram> click on: Goldstone 14
[02:13:07] <takyon> this is the network that communicates with all of our probes and sats right
[02:13:14] <Bytram> bingo!
[02:13:37] <Bytram> on the RHS (Right Hand Side) you should see some details for comms with New Horizons
[02:13:51] <takyon> it's impressive
[02:13:59] <Bytram> range: 4.94 billion km
[02:14:19] <Bytram> round trip lighttime: 9.15 hours
[02:14:19] <takyon> I can't wait to see imagery of the extended mission plutoid target
[02:14:25] <takyon> actually I can wait 4 years
[02:14:30] <Bytram> lol
[02:15:08] <Deucalion> Indeed - sometimes it can be like watching the entire world "wake up" around me when I go out early. Then on the way home I see the early commuters, head down shuffling to work and it becomes depressing. I wish I could think less and just be :(
[02:16:02] <Bytram> so, picture this. I get up in the morning. I issue a command to the new horizons probe. I go to work. I put in an 8 hour day. I head home. and by then, I just might have a response back from the probe.
[02:16:12] <takyon> ugh where is the actual site with Google Cardboard 2
[02:16:45] <Bytram> assuming I had my own private honkin big radio comms dish and cold point it properly!
[02:16:54] <Bytram> why don't you google it? ;)

[02:45:57] <Bytram> back.
[02:46:26] <Bytram> Deucalion: yeah... watching non-morning people trying to function in the AM can be a bit... defeating.
[02:47:37] <Bytram> myself, I wake up in the am and after about a half hour to 45 minutes, I'm both recharged and up to speed. As the day goes on, my 'batteries' get discharged until, at day's end, I'm nodding off.
[02:47:53] <Bytram> there's others I know who are night owls and can't do much of anything before noon.
[02:48:49] <Bytram> I sometimes wonder what might happen if they moved to live a few timezones over could they then find themselves being early birds, instead?
[02:49:04] <Bytram> well, enough deep thought for way too late at night for me.
[02:49:12] <Deucalion> Bytram, I am generally not a morning person.... as in wake up and leap out of bed type, more a night owl that gets to see the morning light from time to time.
[02:49:27] <Bytram> LOL!
[02:49:49] <Bytram> reminds me of the old adage that real programmers only see the dawn if they have been programming straight through the night!
[02:50:38] <Bytram> I was more of a morning person when I was younger. in college, i made a 'loft' to put my bed on and under which I could put my desk. (Trying to make more usable space out of a small dorm room.)
[02:50:45] <Bytram> there was a design error, though.
[02:51:02] <Bytram> there was no place for me to put my alarm clock!
[02:51:33] <Bytram> so, i set it up on my desk so I could see it by looking at a mirror on the opposite wall.
[02:51:58] <Deucalion> Bytram, the working day 9-5 or 8-6 is a hang over from the industrial era. I have worked for corps that cared about delivery rather than presenteeism... I know which I would rather work for again. Just let me know what you want done, by when, I will make it so and "measure" me on that performance... sitting at a desk as a measure of usefulness? That attitude needs to die in a fire.
[02:52:36] <Bytram> when the alarm went off, I would sweep back the covers with one hand, grab the sprinkler system pipe with the other hand, and launch myself out of bed, drop four feet, bounce up, and then hit the snooze button. Yes, that was straight from a dead sleep!
[02:53:02] <Bytram> yeah, I'm right there with you on that one!
[02:53:38] <Bytram> and above all, please don't ask me to spend an hour of my day each day keeping track of what I'm doing and how long it took so that you can have an idea of where I'm at!
[02:54:14] * Deucalion considers more work on his "Humanism in the workplace" thesis.... not sure that would really fly in the MBA happy workplaces we are infested with.
[02:54:25] <Bytram> otoh, if I'm running into a snag, I'll need you to run interference and get me what I need!
[02:54:45] <Bytram> if you take care of me and get rid of my obstacles, I'll move heaven and earth to get things done!
[02:55:08] <Bytram> micro manage me, though, and things will not be pretty.
[02:55:32] <Bytram> don't get me wrong, you'll get stuff done, but not as fast as you would otherwise!
[02:55:50] <Bytram> and with that, I'm gonna call it a night -- I'm wiped.
[02:56:19] <Deucalion> A good manager runs the interference and blocking - it's a nightmare, I have been there, but it is the only way to have people be productive and to get on with what they should be doing.
[02:57:40] <Bytram> yeah, butr when I know the kind of work my manager is doin on my behalf to help me get my work done, I know s/he's got my back and I'll return the effort -- in spades!
[02:58:30] <Bytram> but, let things that are important to me and that are blocking just stagnate without any effort, well... it's hard to summon the same level of commitment.
[02:58:35] <Deucalion> right... two way street. The last thing one would want is a "yes man" for a manager.
[02:58:45] <Bytram> yes, man!
[02:58:50] <Bytram> =)
[02:59:18] <Bytram> and the other way around, too. I doubt a manager wants an employee who says, "Yes, I'll do that" and then does not deliver!
[02:59:19] <Deucalion> Yet everyone hates managers :D
[02:59:25] <Bytram> not I.
[02:59:52] <Bytram> I see the kind of crap that my manager shields from me and I'm continually growing in awe of what she accomplishes with less and less
[03:00:58] <Bytram> "We cut your team's hours by 10%. You did a great job last year in meeting these productivity goals, btw. We've increased them 5% this year. We trust you will meet your goals, right?
[03:01:03] <Bytram> blegh!
[03:01:29] <Bytram> responsibility without the authority is a recipe for ulcers.
[03:02:52] <Bytram> for example, my sales goals per hour went up 20% this year over last year, and my goods available to sell have gone down by at least 25%.
[03:03:00] <Deucalion> Female boss.... cherish.... in my experience they are better at deflecting BS.... hard as nails on the flip, but they fight well for their team.
[03:03:14] <Bytram> I'm working harder, and my metrics are lower than last year!
[03:03:30] <Bytram> Deucalion: that has been my experience as well.
[03:03:57] <Deucalion> Shit's fucked up if you have no say in your own performance measurements in the workplace... RUN!
[03:04:13] <Bytram> though, that said, I have to admit that I've generally had good managers all along with only a couple meh's along the way. I have been most fortunate.
[03:05:10] <Bytram> sure I do! the harder I work, the more successful I become! :P
[03:05:51] <Bytram> okay, *I* am not a night owl and I'm already lagging from staying up too late last night.
[03:05:53] <Deucalion> Yah....
[03:05:57] <Bytram> time for some shuteye.
[03:06:07] <Deucalion> Nighters
[03:06:11] <Bytram> hope you all have a good night and pleasant dreams!
