[12:33:10] <janrinok> CoolHand: ping
[12:43:19] <CoolHand> janrinok:
[12:43:53] <janrinok> your story about life on Mars - you wrote that life _had_ been found
[12:44:09] <janrinok> I changed it to life _could_ be found. Are you happy with that?
[12:45:09] <CoolHand> this story? https://soylentnews.org
[12:45:10] <InfoSphere> ^ 03Error
[12:45:50] <janrinok> yep
[12:45:51] <CoolHand> I didn't write any of it.. just published it.. but it seems fine to me.. although I believe that there has been evidence of microbial life found on mars..
[12:46:44] <janrinok> The sources do not support that. Brine has been found, but no signs of life on Mars. Briny water in the Antartic with similar conditions _has_ got microbial life in it
[12:47:32] <janrinok> I think the submitter got his facts confused
[12:47:52] <CoolHand> probly
[12:48:11] <CoolHand> I haven't had my coffee yet, so I'm easily confused right now, too... :)
[12:48:36] <janrinok> OK, I know that you are out today with your family - have a good one, and enjoy your coffee :)
[12:49:39] <CoolHand> thanks dude.. :)

[14:12:33] <cmn32480> twice
[14:12:41] <cmn32480> janrinok^
[14:16:12] <janrinok> yes
[14:16:20] <cmn32480> all kinda fun
[14:16:27] <cmn32480> how are you this morning sir?
[14:16:29] <janrinok> did you have to lie on it?
[14:16:51] <cmn32480> no, had to move it so the new furniture can get delivered
[14:16:58] <cmn32480> which I WILL lie on
[14:17:14] <janrinok> I'm OK thx. slow but steady recovery.
[14:17:47] <cmn32480> that is good. very glad to hear you are moving steadily to the positive
[14:17:50] <cmn32480> :-)
[14:18:03] <janrinok> tes, but there is quite a way to go yet
[14:18:06] <janrinok> yes*
[14:18:43] <cmn32480> make sure you take it easy. Though I am certain your wife is laying the smack down when you try to push too hard
[14:18:56] <cmn32480> in that way, she sounds alot like my wife
[14:19:01] <janrinok> she tries, but is not always successful
[14:19:21] <janrinok> it's nice to have someone who cares about you, isn't it
[14:19:50] <cmn32480> it is very nice
[14:20:07] <cmn32480> sometimes a warm hug from those that love you makes the whole day better
[14:20:10] <janrinok> how's your kids today?
[14:20:28] <cmn32480> they thought it woudl be funny to wake Daddy up by jumping on him in bed
[14:20:34] <cmn32480> at the behest of their mother
[14:20:51] <cmn32480> surprised the living heck out of me
[14:21:11] <cmn32480> my wife is quite the comedian
[14:21:25] <janrinok> I think that would be fun for them too - and for you, although it wouldn't do for you to admit it ;)
[14:22:42] <cmn32480> I can't admit it to them.
[14:22:49] <cmn32480> but it was a good bit of fun
[14:22:53] <janrinok> has she got a list of jobs for you to do this weekend, just so that you don't get too bored you understand?
[14:23:44] <cmn32480> probably. BUt I have a very large report that has to get completed for work. a half million dollar RFID project for a hospital in New Orleans
[14:24:11] <janrinok> so they want their pound of flesh even when you are not at work
[14:24:13] <cmn32480> and other than getting the lawn cut and my vegetables watered, that is my main focus for the forseeable future
[14:24:29] <cmn32480> this is one of those projects that is time critical
[14:25:03] <cmn32480> they want all this stuff installed by August 1.
[14:25:22] <cmn32480> excuse me, not August 1, July 15.
[14:25:27] <janrinok> I note that between you, you and CoolHand have sorted out the stories for today. Thanks for that
[14:25:31] <cmn32480> the hospital opens on August 1
[14:25:40] <cmn32480> no problem
[14:25:46] <cmn32480> can't let you ahve all the fun can we?
[14:26:04] <janrinok> lol, I suppose not
[14:26:23] <cmn32480> you need the rest, and worrying about our story queue is probably against doctors orders
[14:26:42] <janrinok> very much so, but I have to keep an eye on it, nonetheless
[14:27:24] <cmn32480> I do believe that coolhand and I have been trying our best to make sure that all you need to do is a quick 2nd on most stuff
[14:28:13] <cmn32480> to keep the main page queue full
[14:28:31] <cmn32480> and I know mrcoolbp is working on getting us some additional hands
[14:28:42] <cmn32480> for which we are ever so grateful
[14:28:54] <janrinok> thx, it is appreciated, and I know it is in good hands. It is just something that I have been doing for the last year and I probably wont stop overnight
[14:29:19] <cmn32480> of course not, and we are glad that you haven't.
[14:29:40] <cmn32480> your experience and advice are an excellent sounding board
[14:30:06] <janrinok> a larger team of eds will obviously improve things but there are potential problems to overcome. It becomes much easier to believe that someone else will do it and not to check the queues oneself quite so often
[14:31:44] <cmn32480> agreed, but that is simply a question of getting the correct people in place.
[14:32:29] <cmn32480> we had the same problem in my dept at work
[14:32:44] <cmn32480> we had one guy who assumed that somebody else would do it
[14:32:58] <cmn32480> now, somebody else IS doing it, and he is no longer collecting a paycheck
[14:33:14] <janrinok> we had that problem, but the man expecting someone else to do things was the boss
[14:33:41] <cmn32480> yes. I was here for that, not on staff, but as an observer
[14:33:42] <janrinok> everyone was working very hard apart from him
[14:33:59] <cmn32480> honestly, I found that whole interaction very interesting
[14:34:23] <janrinok> Barabas had some good ideas but was a divide and conquer type of person to some degree
[14:35:00] <cmn32480> from an outsider's prospective, reading the IRC logs and seeing how it all went down, it was quite a compelling drama
[14:35:07] <janrinok> but he did do a lot of good ground work. But for leadership and sheer ability, NC is untouchable
[14:35:37] <cmn32480> agreed. NC is an exceptional individual
[14:36:04] <janrinok> watching him at work - even virtually - is quite daunting to someone of my limited programming abilities
[14:36:07] <cmn32480> and he is even smarter for having surrounded himself with a good team
[14:37:14] <cmn32480> at leat you have limited programming ability
[14:37:20] <cmn32480> I don't ahve that much even
[14:37:33] <janrinok> there is a reason I'm not a dev .... :)
[14:37:59] <cmn32480> but every time I follow (or attempt to follow) a conversation between NC and TMB, I learn somethign
[14:38:10] <cmn32480> usually more tahn 1 something
[14:38:27] <janrinok> I learn something that I did not know, but perhaps should have...
[14:39:07] <cmn32480> the dev team here is quite talented
[14:39:08] <janrinok> watching the entire dev team is always educational. And marty/bytram is brilliant at testing
[14:39:57] <cmn32480> much like I tell customers about what I do, it is a little art, a little science, and a whole lot of black magic
[14:40:10] <janrinok> I can relate to that
[14:42:29] <cmn32480> on a totally different topic - any Idea what happened to NotSanguine?
[14:42:44] <cmn32480> he was rolling along and then just dissappeared one day
[14:43:44] <janrinok> no - but it is not uncommon for new eds to suddenly disappear. More often than not it is the pressure of RW and the realisation that the ed's job is quite a bit more than a few minutes a day
[14:44:04] <cmn32480> understood
[14:44:21] <janrinok> just listening with one ear to the TV News - we have a new princess, as yet unnamed.
[14:44:29] <cmn32480> that is when the "do what you can, but don't overexert" mantra comes out
[14:44:35] <janrinok> exactly
[14:44:37] <cmn32480> My wife told me
[14:44:47] <cmn32480> I thought you were in Belgium?
[14:45:02] <janrinok> N France, but I watch UK TV by satellite
[14:45:07] <cmn32480> ahhhh
[14:45:33] <cmn32480> Missed it by that much
[14:45:59] <janrinok> compared to the US, we could be neighbouring cities rather than adjacent countries
[14:46:49] <cmn32480> yes, that is probably true
[14:47:04] <cmn32480> like Baltimore to Philadelphia - 2 hour drive
[14:47:23] <janrinok> a bit more than that - perhaps 8 hours or so
[14:47:38] <janrinok> well, from where I am at least
[14:47:55] <cmn32480> ok, so Baltimore to BOston
[14:48:10] <cmn32480> I always wanted to get to N. France.
[14:48:16] <cmn32480> Specifcally Normandy
[14:48:22] <janrinok> I'll take your word for it. Hey, did you get your drinks arranged with CH?
[14:48:44] <janrinok> well that is about 1.5 - 2 hours away but easily do-able
[14:48:49] <cmn32480> no yet. haven't made all my reservations. Work got real busy yesterday afternoon
[14:49:19] <janrinok> I can imagine. I have visited the war memorials and historic sites several times
[14:50:12] <cmn32480> I've been a student of WWII for many years, and that is one of the places I really want to go to actually see the beaches, the memorials, and the cemetaries
[14:50:57] <janrinok> there are some sites much more local. There is a beach in a hidden cove about 20 minutes drive from where I live, which was used by allied submarines to pick up downed airmen to return them to safety and operational service. It didn't show on any German maps of the day and remained a secret until after the invasion
[14:51:49] <cmn32480> those are the really amazing sites
[14:51:53] <janrinok> And where I live was occupied, it is possible to find evidence of the occupation if you care to look for it.
[14:52:45] <janrinok> In the village where I live there is a memorial to a UK airman who was downed by AA fire prior to the invasion. I place a wreath there 3 times a year as part of the town celebrations and memorial services.
[14:53:34] <cmn32480> I got a furniture delivery that is showing up
[14:53:37] <cmn32480> back in a couple!
[14:53:41] <janrinok> The germans wanted the body to exploit it for intelligence purposes, but the locals moved it to the church and mounted a guard of honour, refusing the germans access to his body despite them being armed only with farm tools
[15:07:47] janrinok is now known as janrinok|afk
[15:31:50] <cmn32480> Yay for new furniture! :-) The wife is happy, and the sectional isn't too big!
