[12:17:01] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[12:20:34] <n1> hey Bytram
[12:21:45] <Bytram> n1: g'day!
[12:21:55] <Bytram> just popping in 'ere I head to work.
[12:22:01] <Bytram> wasup?
[12:22:59] <n1> not too much, hopefully having a constructive but not too stressful day.
[12:23:03] <n1> how are you?
[12:24:04] <Bytram> too busy, but holding up well. looking fwd to the staff mts tonite
[12:24:59] <n1> should be interesting, i wont be participating as i'll be having an overdue staff meeting of my own this evening
[12:25:10] <n1> but i intend to have it up on my tablet at the same time
[12:26:11] <Bytram> nod nod
[12:26:22] <n1> hope things calm down for you though, busy is good, too busy not so much
[12:28:22] <Bytram> thanks. half of the 'too busy' is this site! =)
[12:28:54] <Bytram> kindda keeps me in balance as my day job is not technical.
[12:29:38] <n1> yeah, keeps things fresh and the technical mindset still on form.
[12:29:55] <Bytram> nod nod.
[12:30:21] <Bytram> uses a different 'collection' of neurons, too. hard to 'splain, but I think you know what I mean.
[12:30:47] <Bytram> I've gotten to the point where I generally now enjoy working with the general public...
[12:30:51] <n1> I do indeed!
[12:31:01] <n1> oh wow, i don't know about that lol
[12:31:12] <n1> depends on context i guess
[12:31:15] <Bytram> but it's a whole 'nother can of fish when I'm trying to grok a tech issue with 5 degrees of freedom!
[12:31:49] <n1> working environment makes a big difference in any line of work
[12:32:47] <Bytram> yuppers! Got some great folks I work with, for the most part, and some customers I see pretty regularly.
[12:33:15] <Bytram> hours change each week, though, and the pressures have been slowly racheting up to meet sales goals and metrics and all that.
[12:33:21] <Bytram> not so much fun as it used to be.
[12:33:43] <Bytram> could also be that I've been at it long enough that the 'honeymoon' stage has long since worn off.
[12:34:20] <Bytram> speaking of which, it's time I get started on getting ready for my day job.
[12:34:31] <n1> Thats what i enjoy about working on the music festivals, for the most part the people you're working with are very cool, and the customers are generally in good spirits. The pressure and stress is still there, and the hours can be very long and hard. But the environment and 'all in it together' attitude of some of the other crews, really make it pleasant overall.
[12:34:49] <Bytram> YES!
[12:35:04] <n1> Take care, Bytram. Have a good day. :)
[12:35:34] * Bytram once spent a summer working for Fourmla1's (then brand new) digital broadcast TV channel. crazy pressure, wicked fun!
[12:35:58] <n1> that sounds about right :)
[12:36:03] <Bytram> when there's a few meelion people watching, kinda important to avoid mistakes! =)
[12:36:10] <Bytram> LOL!
[12:36:14] <n1> hah, indeed
[12:36:27] <Bytram> ok, gtg GREAT chatting with ya!
[12:36:31] <n1> laters :)

[12:41:13] <Woods> Normal, blueberry donut, energy drink. You?
[12:42:05] <n1> just finished some hoisin duck pancakes for a late breakfast, so pretty pleased with myself.
[12:42:48] <n1> there should be no rules as what's acceptable for breakfast, fuck the system.

[18:30:55] <Blackmoore> .. and in
[18:32:00] <mrcoolbp> OKAY
[18:32:08] <mrcoolbp> so you know have editor privledges
[18:32:42] <mrcoolbp> There is lot's of information on the wiki already
[18:33:13] <mrcoolbp> read: http://sylnt.us http://sylnt.us
[18:33:16] <monopoly> ^ 04Wiki: 03Story Style: Note: Whereas some languages, like French and German, have standardized forms governed by regulatory bodies, English is in many ways a free-for-all. Let this be a collection of information on which we english-speakers (typers?) agree. ( http://wiki.soylentnews.org )
[18:33:16] <monopoly> ^ 04Wiki: 03Editing Process: Parent: Editors Team ( http://wiki.soylentnews.org )
[18:33:42] <mrcoolbp> Blackmoore: but we can just give you a crash course for now
[18:35:16] <mrcoolbp> at least you'll be slightly familiar with the interface, you can play around on dev, post whatever, make mistakes, etc. The server is there for testing code, but we like to hijack it for editor training.
[18:35:28] <Blackmoore> works for me
[18:35:51] <mrcoolbp> okay, at the top, click on the submission list link
[18:36:08] <mrcoolbp> it'll say "14 Submissions"
[18:36:43] <Blackmoore> ok
[18:36:56] * Azrael sits back and suffers a form of deja vu :D
[18:37:03] <mrcoolbp> the links in the middle are the Subject/Title line included in the submission, let's click on your submssion
[18:37:29] <Blackmoore> ok into bargin box
[18:37:53] <Blackmoore> i see that i can edit title and body
[18:38:13] <mrcoolbp> "Dept" is blank (until paulej72 figures out a way to include that in the submission process)
[18:38:41] <mrcoolbp> you can type anything with spaces and it will come out: with-all-the-hyphens-already
[18:38:54] <Blackmoore> ok and that's the"from the "massive-hole-in-the-plot" dept.
[18:39:13] <mrcoolbp> yup
[18:39:36] <mrcoolbp> below that are nexus (Main Page) and the "Topic"
[18:39:47] <mrcoolbp> (nexuses aren't setup yet)
[18:40:01] <Blackmoore> right
[18:40:10] <mrcoolbp> we might have one for "Original Content" here as per previ. discussion
[18:40:16] <Blackmoore> i should be able to change topic.
[18:40:21] <mrcoolbp> yessssir
[18:40:37] <mrcoolbp> to the right of the "topic" there is a button
[18:40:43] <Blackmoore> ah got it
[18:41:12] <mrcoolbp> should say "preview" or update
[18:41:23] <mrcoolbp> can't rememeber which as I beleieve it looks diff. to me
[18:41:30] <Blackmoore> i should have realized that the ed would drop carriage returns
[18:41:37] <mrcoolbp> oh yeah
[18:42:09] <mrcoolbp> Azrael actually worked up a cool WYSIWYG plugin
[18:42:13] <mrcoolbp> greasemonkey I think
[18:42:17] <Azrael> yah
[18:42:33] <mrcoolbp> I'm sure he can link you if you prefer that to HTML
[18:42:42] <Azrael> latest tweaks do some auto replace of html, stripping BRs and replacing with Ps etc.
[18:42:47] <Blackmoore> Ooh yeah that's gonna be a required thing for long articles
[18:42:48] * mrcoolbp nudges Azrael
[18:42:59] <Azrael> one mo for link :)
[18:43:05] * mrcoolbp nudges Azrael
[18:43:34] <mrcoolbp> oh, mo = moment , not mo = more
[18:43:42] <mrcoolbp> aaaaaanyways...
[18:44:07] <mrcoolbp> Blackmoore, click the button directly to the right of "Hardware" (the topic dropdown)
[18:44:23] <mrcoolbp> that button should say either "Preview" or "Update"
[18:46:13] <Blackmoore> preview
[18:46:22] <mrcoolbp> This will bring us to the editing panel
[18:47:13] <Azrael> (cannot guarantee this works for anyone but me) http://www.learning-technologist.net
[18:47:38] <Azrael> required Firefox and https://addons.mozilla.org
[18:47:38] <mrcoolbp> there is a preview of the story at the top, then a "Similar & Related Stories" box, then the editing interface below that
[18:47:38] <monopoly> ^ 03Greasemonkey :: Add-ons for Firefox
[18:48:25] <Blackmoore> Azrael: i may have to fiddle. it came through as text. I do have elipse here.
[18:48:43] <mrcoolbp> Blackmoore: above is the link to the GS script for the WYSIWYG editor, bookmmark that for later
[18:49:05] <Blackmoore> yup yup. book marked and saved
[18:49:13] <mrcoolbp> okay, are you in the editing panel?
[18:49:25] <Blackmoore> I'm in the reg editor and it makes pretty clear sense
[18:49:57] <mrcoolbp> please make use of the "Extended Copy"
[18:50:30] <mrcoolbp> otherwise the main page is difficult to navigate
[18:50:46] <mrcoolbp> see the colored stories list on the right?
[18:50:52] <mrcoolbp> (titled "Story Admin"
[18:51:09] <Blackmoore> DOH. hit save. i think it accepted it
[18:51:13] <mrcoolbp> rofl
[18:51:41] <mrcoolbp> yup, that's set to go out in 7 minutes!
[18:51:44] <mrcoolbp> what do we do!?!?
[18:51:54] <mrcoolbp> so now we can do two things:
[18:52:22] <mrcoolbp> we need to go back in and edit that story first
[18:52:31] <mrcoolbp> go to the "Stories" link at the top of the page
[18:52:37] <mrcoolbp> (in the admin bar)
[18:52:52] <mrcoolbp> at the top of the list in red, you'll see your story
[18:53:02] <mrcoolbp> click that and you'll see an "Edit" button in the story
[18:53:42] <mrcoolbp> we could push the time out further, but instead find the "Display" checkbox and UNCHECK it, then click "Save"
[18:54:09] <Blackmoore> ah got it - it was in yellow.
[18:54:17] <mrcoolbp> ah yes, my mistake
[18:54:40] <mrcoolbp> GREEN: the story has been checked by at least 2 editors
[18:55:07] <Blackmoore> ok, that should do it
[18:55:08] <mrcoolbp> RED: someone ELSE's story that has only been "checked" by them
[18:55:23] <mrcoolbp> YELLOW: Your story that no one else has checked yet
[18:55:44] <mrcoolbp> GREY: Unchecked Display
[18:56:01] <Blackmoore> *nods*
[18:56:17] <mrcoolbp> okay, times are in UTC
[18:56:40] <mrcoolbp> this is annoying, I suggest getting a UTC clock or app that is easily accessible when setting times
[18:56:57] <Blackmoore> yeah
[18:57:14] <Blackmoore> and then i can set stuff to release at X time
[18:57:46] <mrcoolbp> yup.
[18:57:47] <mrcoolbp> Best Practice: <br> tags should be replaced with <p>par</p> tags
[18:58:01] <mrcoolbp> let's see, what else for a crash course
[18:58:49] <mrcoolbp> well, always pay attention to the "Display" status, Time, and use the preview button for onw = )
[18:58:54] <mrcoolbp> one*
[19:00:00] <Blackmoore> have we always had the option to add video and audio?
[19:00:01] <mrcoolbp> There is a way to write a story from scratch (the "New" link between "Stories" and "Submissions") but this is generally not done
[19:00:17] <mrcoolbp> Blackmoore: not sure if that's compleltely working, though we can post some files
[19:00:42] <mrcoolbp> NC posted an image in the NNTP post, I've never done it myself though
[19:01:31] <Blackmoore> not that I need it, just was talking about that with TMB the other day
[19:02:14] <Blackmoore> that might be a way to highlight original work too. anyway i'll play with that later
[19:02:20] <mrcoolbp> Blackmooore, I think for the original content, we might actually want to use the "New" button to right stories from scratch. We'll need to develop a slightly different manually of style and procedures for this likely, I'm guessing. Work with LaminatorX and janrionok on that
[19:02:29] <mrcoolbp> right = write
[19:02:37] <Blackmoore> yup
[19:03:06] <mrcoolbp> You'll have to ALWAYS uncheck "Display" using that method though, until a second Ed. can check
[19:03:08] <Blackmoore> the upload button for text works too
[19:03:14] <mrcoolbp> cool
[19:03:35] <Blackmoore> absolutely
[19:03:59] <mrcoolbp> oh, and you have to use this weird interface to assing nexus and topic if you write them from scratch using the "New" link at the top
[19:04:20] <Blackmoore> m.. k.
[19:04:44] <mrcoolbp> There's a list and an "X" and an "+" surrounded by up and down arrows to the right of it
[19:04:54] <mrcoolbp> click the "plus"
[19:05:31] <mrcoolbp> highlight a nexus and topic and click "Add" and they are added
[19:05:49] <mrcoolbp> them you have to move them around with the "up" "down" arrows
[19:06:10] <Blackmoore> yup. it looks like you can have more than one topic.
[19:06:19] <mrcoolbp> yeah, I haven't tried that yet
[19:06:37] <mrcoolbp> might break the whole site = )
[19:06:51] <Blackmoore> well, let's not try that at the moment
[19:07:02] <mrcoolbp> I was kiddin' but ya never know with slash
[19:07:29] <mrcoolbp> on that topic, there migh be some other links in the Admin navbar at the top, I wouldn't mess around with them if you have them
[19:07:46] <mrcoolbp> obviously "Poll" you can mess with
[19:08:54] <mrcoolbp> BlackMoore: anything else you need should be in those first two Wiki articles I linked you, also feel free to refine those articles as needed. Always good to have a fresh set of eyes from someone learning the process on those as they act as guides for those that folllow you
[19:09:08] <Blackmoore> yup.
[19:09:22] <mrcoolbp> well that's pretty much all I got for now
[19:09:37] <mrcoolbp> let me know if you have any questions, or just ask the guys in this channel
[19:09:58] <mrcoolbp> except Woods, that guy is a lamer.
[19:10:08] * mrcoolbp runs
[19:10:20] <Blackmoore> *snort*
[19:10:49] <Blackmoore> well I cant promise i wont break anything. but I'll keep experiemtnation to the Dev system.
[19:11:23] <Azrael> yeah, with that spelling you'll fit right in :D
[19:12:14] <mrcoolbp> ROFL
[19:12:30] <Blackmoore> was someone trying to pm me?
[19:12:43] <Blackmoore> the web irc failed
[19:12:46] <Azrael> Blackmoore: moi
[19:12:47] <mrcoolbp> Blackmoore: you don't yet have privs on prod, when you get an "okay" from LaminatorX, we can "make [that] so"
[19:13:04] <mrcoolbp> so feel free to break dev. Just let us know how you did it = )
[19:13:05] <Azrael> Blackmoore: I tried again
[19:17:08] <Blackmoore> FF webirc is funny. i can start a pm in chat fine, but to accept one it pops up an new tab labled "8" (inplace of thwe name of the contact
[19:17:19] <Blackmoore> and no message
[19:18:12] <Blackmoore> ok. I'll play more later.. i have work to get done
[19:25:14] <Woods> Hey man...
[19:25:16] <Woods> ... Yeah.
[19:36:08] <Blackmoore> hi Woods! look like I'm gonna be on this side of submissions too :P
[19:41:58] <mrcoolbp> <<Woods>>
[19:42:27] <mrcoolbp> Blackmoore: soon young padawan, you'll have to prove thyself to EiC first
[19:48:39] <Blackmoore> :P
[20:08:38] <paulej72> You can add multiple topics. I know it work on /. so feel free to try it on dev
[20:27:13] <mrcoolbp> cool, gonna test that and linking poll+story as well in a few minutes
[20:28:18] <paulej72> we need to test making a jounal a story. I think that can be done.
[20:28:48] <mrcoolbp> cool
