[15:53:56] <janrinok> mattie_p: I just knew, when I saw that story in the queue, that 'someone' would submit that as an example! rofl!
[15:54:56] <mattie_p> yup
[15:55:10] <janrinok> having a good day?
[15:55:11] <mattie_p> yours is merely the most famous example
[15:55:23] <mattie_p> so far, but all I've done is make coffee and have my first cup
[15:55:30] <janrinok> lol - well, if it wasn't before, it is now!
[15:55:30] <mattie_p> moving has yet to begin
[15:55:47] <janrinok> how close to the big day are you?
[15:56:07] <mattie_p> Monday is our day to drive, so 4 days left to work
[15:56:11] <mattie_p> I think we'll make it
[15:56:45] <janrinok> it always get exciting (i.e. rushed) towards the move date
[15:57:15] <mattie_p> sure does
[15:57:26] <janrinok> a couple of days to drive there?
[15:58:44] <mattie_p> we'll be driving to NY, about 2500km, taking about 4 days to do it
[15:59:08] <janrinok> that's a reasonable pace but still a long time to be couped up in a vehicle.
[15:59:16] <mattie_p> yeah it is
[15:59:33] <mattie_p> we did it a year ago coming out here though so we know what we are in for
[15:59:46] <janrinok> Are the children excited or already complaining about the friends they will 'lose'
[16:00:08] <mattie_p> mostly complaining. They are on edge because of the uncertainty
[16:00:21] <mattie_p> we're trying to keep them busy and preoccupied so they can't dwell on it
[16:00:49] <janrinok> that's natural, and how is Tonya Servo taking it all?
[16:01:50] <mattie_p> much of the same, she worries about it all as well. Mostly we're just too busy. We try to stick to business hours as best we can, but its hard not to look at everything that still needs to be done
[16:02:59] <janrinok> Nothing constructive that I can do to help, but good luck and best wishes to you all for the move.
[16:04:10] <mattie_p> thanks
[16:04:26] <mattie_p> well its 8am local here, time to crack the whip on myself before it gets too hot
[16:04:50] <janrinok> lol - yep, that's enough coffee, now let's see some work out of you!
[16:04:59] <Bytram> mattie_p: Hi! Just tossing in my .02USD - it's one of the larger stress events in life, moving. Good that you are aware of that and taking steps to mitigate it.
[16:05:13] <janrinok> Have a good one! mattie_p
[16:05:16] <janrinok> hi Bytram
[16:05:20] <Bytram> janrinok: hi!
[16:05:50] <janrinok> and how's your day shaping up?
[16:06:23] <Bytram> mattie_p: When struggling with somethiing, I take comfort in knowing I'm not the very first person to encounter it... and if they could do it, so can I.
[16:06:48] <Bytram> they just pushed UTF-8 character support onto dev, so I'm trying to break it. =)
[16:06:50] <Bytram> you?
[16:07:32] <janrinok> I didn't sleep too well last night, so I thought that I would have 30 minutes lying on the bed. Woke up 2.5 hours later!
[16:09:26] <Bytram> GOOD for you! (the catching up on your sleep, not the sleepless part!)
[16:09:58] <janrinok> my SO was happy for me to sleep on, she coped without me for the few hours.
[16:12:19] <janrinok> but got to make us both a cup of tea - brb
[16:23:43] <janrinok> ah, life has just become much better - I have a cup of tea in hand!
[16:29:28] <janrinok> Bytram: How's the UTF-8 busting going?
[16:29:51] <Bytram> they are, umm, "regrouping" =)
[16:29:59] <janrinok> lol
[16:30:03] <Bytram> i.e. success on the first attempt to break things.
[16:30:22] <janrinok> what did you find broke it?
[16:31:34] <Bytram> oh, about 20+ named character entities; like: "&" just got deleted.
[16:31:58] <Bytram> janrinok: take a look at this: http://dev.soylentnews.org
[16:34:04] <janrinok> Yep, that seems like a good place to start testing.... I can't see the Euro symbol but I don't know what it is called in UTF-8
[16:34:26] <Bytram> janrinok:lemme check, but hold on a bit.
[16:34:38] <janrinok> np - it was an observation not a criticism
[16:35:43] <janrinok> It's one of those characters that I frequently have to use in articles, along with the £ sign, and various grave, accent, umlaut and other diacriticals.
[16:38:44] <LaminatorX> I notice a lot of the ones that are displaying are showing Latin characters rather than diacriticals and such.
[16:39:18] <Bytram> LaminatorX: what are you using for a font? That can play a MAJOR factor in what you see.
[16:39:22] <Bytram> janrinok: €
[16:39:39] <janrinok> It is good for testing purposes, but whether or not I can mix Swahili with Russian and Tamil is a moot point for most stories.
[16:41:31] <Bytram> LaminatorX: I'm using "Unifont CUSR" which can be found here: http://unifoundry.com
[16:41:56] <Bytram> mine has MD5SUM of: 9cc7308e610b1fdc33c2d58251ddff4c

[16:53:32] <janrinok> some work, some don't
[16:54:24] <janrinok> hi mrcoolbp - enjoying your morning coffee?
[16:54:36] <mrcoolbp> yup = )
[16:55:01] <janrinok> well, I hope the day goes well for you!
[16:55:23] <mrcoolbp> thanks! I'm still waking up
[16:56:15] <janrinok> take it easy, chill a while, the hectic part will start soon enough
[16:56:32] <Bytram> mrcoolbp: g'morning!
[16:56:53] <mrcoolbp> g'mornin' Bytram
[16:57:00] <Bytram> coffee++
[16:57:00] <Bender> karma - coffee: 3
[16:57:07] <mrcoolbp> yup
[16:57:23] <LaminatorX> Times New roman, I believe.
[16:57:55] <Bytram> they're busing in #Soylent talking about rolling TheMightyBuzzard's UTF-8 support changes into dev. It's been fun!
[16:58:10] <mrcoolbp> janrinok, my family's a bit crazy, the hectic part is the cooking for 15 people
[16:59:42] <janrinok> I can imagine that would take some doing, especially indoors. I think the most I've coped with is 8 people. Do you have any favourites that you enjoy cooking (meals, that is, not family...)
[17:00:45] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: wel second year in a row we walked out in "the flats" and harvested our own large sea clams for making NE Clam Chowder
[17:00:53] <mrcoolbp> wel= well
[17:01:24] <janrinok> my mouth is watering already - I can be there by Saturday afternoon, have you got a spare plate?
[17:01:30] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: the beach here becomes 2 miles long at low tide
[17:01:35] <mrcoolbp> janrinok, yes
[17:01:52] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: it's crazy, like an alien landscape
[17:02:10] <mrcoolbp> seriously 2 miles
[17:02:29] * mrcoolbp is not exaggerating
[17:02:39] <janrinok> beautiful - the beaches here are all surrounded by granite cliffs, and the coast consists of dozens of small, almost private beaches. If you know how to find them, you can have one for yourself for the day.
[17:02:55] <mrcoolbp> meh I don't mind a few people
[17:03:25] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: not sure I'm explaining it correctly, but the water goes out 2 miles
[17:03:41] <janrinok> no I understand - it sounds idyllic
[17:03:54] <mrcoolbp> it's one of the only places in the world where this happens
[17:04:04] <janrinok> I've seen similar elsewhere but nothing like that locally.
[17:04:34] <mrcoolbp> oh cool, where?
[17:04:54] <janrinok> Are you having a quiet family break or is everyday packed with adventures and activities?
[17:05:07] <mrcoolbp> people are still waking/showering
[17:05:10] <Bytram> mrcoolbp: that sounds amazing! where are you at?
[17:05:25] <mrcoolbp> Bytram: Brewster, MA
[17:05:50] <mrcoolbp> bay-side of the Cape
[17:06:02] <Bytram> hmmm, about half-way up the crook of cape cod? IIRC
[17:06:11] <mrcoolbp> yes!
[17:06:22] <mrcoolbp> right near the "elbo"
[17:06:34] <LaminatorX> That's the one thing I wish we had here in Missouri. There are a couple of good-sized lakes, but that's not the same.
[17:06:41] <mrcoolbp> "elbow"
[17:06:42] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: in the Far East and, believe it or not, in the UK around Morecombe, but there the 'beaches' tend to become mud flats. Its a dangerous place because when the tide comes in it moves at a very quick pace and often catches people out.
[17:06:44] <Bytram> passed by there a couple times on my way to/from provincetown; never stopped in, though.
[17:07:07] -!- zizban [zizban!zizban@e.clients.kiwiirc.com] has joined #editorial
[17:07:08] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: sounds about right

[17:07:30] <mrcoolbp> zizban: sup.
[17:07:51] <janrinok> hi zizban
[17:07:57] <Bytram> mrcoolbp: the nice thing about that arrangement with the beach, when the sun is out in the AM it warms up all the sand; tide comes in and gets warmed up to something almost pleasantly warm!
[17:08:14] <zizban> hi all
[17:08:15] <mrcoolbp> exactly
[17:08:28] <mrcoolbp> which is quite welcome in ice-cold NE ocean

[17:16:03] <n1> hey janrinok
[17:16:21] <n1> that an only mean there's an impending crisis...
[17:16:33] <zizban> I wont be able to work on stories but if anyone needs me to give theirs a looksee let me know
[17:16:45] * zizban breathes deep. It's chaos at work
[17:16:56] <janrinok> .. sounds like the trailer for a movie, n1
[17:17:34] <zizban> "In a world of many editors, there is just one who stands for truth and justice!"
[17:17:40] <janrinok> zizban: put every third student in detention, expel a handful, keep the smartest, and put your feet up.
[17:17:49] * zizban nods
[17:17:52] <zizban> Yes!
[17:18:06] <LaminatorX> Hello.
[17:18:11] <janrinok> er, which ed is that then?
[17:18:19] <n1> i'd say get the students to do the editing :p
[17:18:31] <n1> janrinok, was wondering the same thing heh
[17:18:43] <janrinok> Hang about, they'd be better at than I would, I could lose this highly paid job...!
[17:19:18] <n1> rofl
[17:19:38] <LaminatorX> Show them Alec baldwin's scene from Glengary Glenross.
[17:20:19] <zizban> Someone commented on the editing on the hover car story and I told them 'That's why they pay me the big bucks'
[17:20:21] <janrinok> LaminatorX promised me the riches last week, I think. I've got my super-secure cardboard box ready, and I'm just waiting for the Brinks courier to roll up to my front door.
[17:21:01] <LaminatorX> I heard they're still working on finding a big enough truck.
[17:21:04] <zizban> I think he stops at my door next
[17:21:05] <n1> zizban, it will all become easier when you have two comments side by side, with strong feelings on editing standards and opposing view points.
[17:21:09] <janrinok> zizban - I think we've been conned on the money side of things....
[17:21:14] <zizban> heh
[17:23:07] <janrinok> Another good one ziz, is to say you've compared this post with all the posts that the complainant has submitted (usually 0) and it looks OK in that light....
[17:23:43] <n1> hah, bitchy or what :p
[17:24:08] Bytram is now known as bytram|afk
[17:24:11] <janrinok> no, don't mention any numbers, _they_ know what they have - or haven't - submitted.
[17:24:27] <zizban> heh
[17:24:44] <n1> i think i've surprised a few people with responding to comments admitting i made a mistake and offering a sincere apology for an oversight
[17:25:26] <janrinok> Yep, it always catches them unawares. And I've sent apologetic emails when I have to refuse stories - that also surprises them.
[17:26:10] <zizban> We are different here. Every single editor here takes pride in their work.
[17:26:13] <janrinok> ..But you often get anothe submission within days.
[17:27:11] <janrinok> well, I would hope that would happen anywhere. But, despite my best efforts, I sometimes release things which make me say 'Why did I do that?'.
[17:27:51] <zizban> ya I imagine so
[17:30:00] <janrinok> If the submissions keep coming in at this rate for the next 24 hours, we might just have enough to cover the weekend!
[17:31:16] <janrinok> This week has been a good week, I feel. Enough eds to make it not too difficult, sufficient subs of acceptable quality, and not too much vitriol in the comments! Win!
[17:31:22] <zizban> I noticed in someone's journal they were pondering if we were posting too many stories a day
[17:32:04] <janrinok> Well we never post more than about 1 / hour, unless NC drops something into the queue, and that is our target rate.
[17:32:57] <janrinok> If we can manage 1 every 2 hours over the weekend we will be doing well. It sometimes slips to 1 every 3 hours.
[17:35:17] <janrinok> I'm do not think that the World Cup Suicides story is SN material.... Suicide because of gambling debts is not really our niche.
[17:35:30] <zizban> I agree
[17:36:53] <janrinok> But there might be a spin which compares WC suicides with the number committed by SysDevs trying to set up Apache 1.5 with slashcode...
[17:38:17] <zizban> LOL
[17:38:42] <janrinok> Actually, I'm very impressed with our 'backend' team - if that is an appropriate term. I might be speaking too soon but things seem to have settled down to controlled mayhem now.
[17:42:39] <janrinok> Actually, there are one or 2 very good subs at the moment - and even some appropriate light-hearted ones.
[17:43:56] <janrinok> The Pastafarian's Firearms Licence just cracks me up - with photo too!
[17:44:32] <zizban> This I gotta see

[18:48:54] <zizban> Of course

[19:18:46] <zizban> Thats a lot compared to the usual
[19:25:59] <janrinok> seems reasonably well received so far. But how do users keep their anonimity if they have to use their real names to pay? (I'm not _really_ called janrinok...)
[19:27:03] <LaminatorX> Wait, what? That's going to screw up delivery on the truck full of money.
[19:27:24] <janrinok> No, no - everyone thinks I am called that.....

[19:29:51] <zizban> Save some for me!
[19:30:35] <janrinok> Yours will be a different truck won't it?
[19:31:58] <zizban> Maybe.
[19:32:37] <LaminatorX> They may only have one truck large enoug.
[19:33:15] <zizban> Oh OK then
[19:33:18] <zizban> One truck
[19:35:54] <janrinok> LaminatorX: you'd better come clean Lam, we _not_ going to be paid as much as you first hinted, are we?!
