[05:03:30] <Bytram|away> hmm, latest story: " Mantle Mineral Deep Underground May Contain a Lot of Water"
[05:03:50] <Bytram|away> shouldn't that be: "Mantle Mineral Deep Underground May Contain Lots of Water"
[05:04:26] <Bytram|away> or even: "Deep Underground Mantle Minerals May Contain Lots of Water"
[05:08:53] <mrcoolbp> Bytram|away, I have only a few minutes
[05:09:25] <mrcoolbp> I like the 3rd option
[05:09:31] <Bytram|away> hi! Long time no see. No biggie, it's just that "a lot" always seems to "irrk" me.
[05:09:39] <mrcoolbp> maybe even take out "Minerals" but I didn't read the article
[05:09:52] <Bytram|away> thanks for the input!
[05:09:54] <mrcoolbp> Bytram, I know i've had a rediculous week
[05:09:56] <mrcoolbp> no prob
[05:10:01] <Bytram|away> hope you're not working too late!
[05:10:12] <Bytram|away> just remember this:
[05:10:29] <Bytram|away> "The shortest distance between despair and hope is a good night's sleep."
[05:10:45] <Bytram|away> that comes from my own, hard-won, experience.
[05:12:16] <mrcoolbp> good quote
[05:13:28] <Bytram|away> thanks! And I just updated the story title... thanks again!
[05:13:53] <Bytram|away> of course, I've had a long day and *I* am still on-line! goose/gander, yanno?
[05:13:54] <Bytram|away> =)
[05:16:15] <mrcoolbp> I do
[05:16:35] <mrcoolbp> gotta run though, you and LamX are kickin' ass in there
[05:16:54] <mrcoolbp> got 4 stories in the queue in the time it took me to review NCommander's post!
[05:16:59] <mrcoolbp> see you later
[05:17:02] * mrcoolbp goes AFK
[05:17:50] <mrcoolbp> (lol janrinok put 2 stories 3 min apart)

[15:10:17] <Woods> Hey Janrinok.
[15:10:45] <janrinok> hi Woods how was your weekend?
[15:11:05] <Woods> Pretty good, yourself?
[15:12:06] <janrinok> OK, but back to this week's grindstone... :-)
[15:15:08] <LaminatorX> Hello,
[15:15:12] <LaminatorX> .
[15:16:37] <janrinok> Hi LaminatorX !
[15:22:30] * janrinok notes that that was a brief conversation - lol!
[15:26:07] <LaminatorX> Working (for a change). :)
[15:28:25] <janrinok> Lol - serves you right! Everything OK other than the fact that you are working?

[15:56:46] <janrinok> hi n1 - it looks like an editing frenzy is taking place with 3 of us all trying to do stories at the same time!
[15:57:47] <n1> it does indeed
[15:57:57] <n1> hope i didnt accidentally do a story someone else was working on!
[15:57:58] <janrinok> have a good w'end?
[15:58:23] <janrinok> No I started doing one that you were working on which is when I realised what was happening!
[15:58:25] <n1> tolerable is about all i can say really. how about yourself?
[15:58:51] <janrinok> Ok - we got tight for stories but we pulled it off again!
[16:00:34] <n1> saturday night was a close run thing, i had to push IRS/Tea Party story to post about 5 minutes after i edited it.
[16:02:08] <janrinok> At one point I was waiting for submissions to come in so that I could release something. Getting my own stories and releasing them would have been a little bit naughty, but was my next option.
[16:02:46] <n1> yeah, i saw your subs in the queue (obviously), was a big help to keep things rolling
[16:03:07] <n1> naughty, but in those situations acceptable in my book. no one picked me up on it the two times i've done it.
[16:03:13] <janrinok> That was from Friday night when I saw we had 3 stories left!
[16:03:42] <n1> dont think ive ever seen it that low
[16:04:15] <janrinok> I even resorted to releasing someone's submission containing 4 jokes!
[16:06:06] <n1> which one was that?
[16:06:25] <n1> i'm really surprised at the number of comments on the obesity story
[16:06:49] <janrinok> 'Humorous remarks from Clueless Colleagues'
[16:07:10] <janrinok> Me too - let give em more like that!
[16:07:38] <n1> hugh pickens knows how to generate a response
[16:08:11] <janrinok> Don't like the guy personally - but he submits some good stuff from time to time, that's for sure.
[16:09:02] <n1> i dont know about personally, his agenda/reason for writing so many stories does puzzle me.
[16:11:10] <janrinok> Damn - just put out a story with the wrong date on it, had to retract and reissue!
[16:11:56] <n1> take cover, incorporation report/update just went out!
[16:12:29] <janrinok> I thought it was well put together and made sense - I hope the community like it also.
[16:13:20] <n1> yeah, me too
[16:13:52] <Woods> Mattie_p: You checking for typos in the incorporation report?
[16:14:16] <mattie_p> just finished up
[16:14:26] <Woods> k, I will refresh and check it as well.
[16:14:31] <janrinok> its already gone live - but hi mattie_p !
[16:14:33] <mattie_p> NCommander was trying to ping me last night, I suspect for that
[16:14:53] <janrinok> I made a correction or 2 earlier
[16:15:08] <Bytram> I took a pass through it the day he first put it up, found a few minor things, but was pretty good right from the4 start.
[16:15:10] <mattie_p> janrinok, finished my 2nd edit 24 seconds after it went out, so most will see the final version
[16:15:13] <janrinok> Good update though!
[16:15:29] <mattie_p> yeah, it looks like a great update to the site
[16:15:45] <janrinok> cutting it fine - but good effort! How's things at home, back to normal now?
[16:16:03] <mattie_p> I've been so busy with packing haven't had much time for much else. We're planning to move in a week or two
[16:16:15] <janrinok> moving far ?
[16:16:44] <mattie_p> yeah, about 2500 kilometers IIRC
[16:17:17] <janrinok> not quite within walking distance then.....
[16:17:25] <mattie_p> I hate all my stuff right now, if we didn't need it all later (and there was no police around) I'd put it in a pile and burn it.
[16:17:49] <janrinok> business related or did you just fancy a change of view?
[16:18:50] <mattie_p> Both. business related, in that I have no job and haven't found one here. Change of view in that we're moving to be closer to family, given the whole US to choose from
[16:19:19] <mattie_p> Incidentally we are moving closer to the rest of the US-based SN staff, but that is incidental and a side-benefit
[16:19:30] <janrinok> I hope that you are not having to break too many ties by the move.
[16:20:04] <janrinok> mattie_p: on the plus side - baking should become an awful lot easier too!]
[16:20:14] <mattie_p> We have some friends here, but not too many. All of them are at the church we attend, but we're used to moving so we can make new ones
[16:20:26] <mattie_p> janrinok - hadn't thought of that, but yes, another good benefit
[16:20:40] <janrinok> the military experience is always useful.....
[16:21:17] <janrinok> Has your daughter almost forgotten the accident?
[16:21:41] <Bytram> mattie_p: and endurance, too, with a lot more oxygen in the air at the lower elevation!
[16:21:42] <mattie_p> Not really, she still talks about it. But she's moved on and is back to normal.
[16:22:13] <mattie_p> she has a memory like a steel trap, still talks about stuff that happened when she was 3 or 4 years old like it was yesterday
[16:22:16] * Bytram remembers getting the wind knocked out of him when racing to catch a connecting flight many years ago. Not Fun.
[16:22:17] <janrinok> that's good news. We all send her our best, I'm sure. In fact, best wishes to you all and hope the move goes well for you.
[16:22:31] <mattie_p> thanks
[16:22:48] <Bytram> what janrinok said goes for me, too.
[16:23:12] <mattie_p> I've had to focus on whats immediately important right now, glad to hear from both of you
[16:23:33] <Woods> K, I made a half-dozen fixes, but it looks good.
[16:23:41] <mattie_p> Bytram: I stopped running once I left the military, so I haven't noticed an endurance issue :)
[16:23:41] <Bytram> mattie_p: first things first, indeed!
[16:23:43] <Woods> And now the word corporation looks funny to me.
[16:23:48] <janrinok> np, and I suspect you will have other things on your mind for the next few weeks at least. We'll be here when you have the time!
[16:27:11] <janrinok> Woods: good effort - I don't know how many people checked that work for how many times, but everyone found something to correct!
[16:27:48] * janrinok notes that it probably means there are still errors lurking in there somewhere...
[16:28:26] <Woods> Janrinok: I have noticed that of any article that is large enough. If you looked through it right now, you would find several errors.
[16:28:34] <mattie_p> oh yeah, whenever NCommander writes a long update I know it will be riddled. The man produces a torrent of good material, but there are always corrections needed
[16:28:34] <Woods> Then, if I looked through it again, I would also find more errors.
[16:29:02] <Bytram> Woods: select-all, delete. No more errors! ;^)
[16:29:07] <n1> rofl
[16:29:22] <janrinok> I'll leave it to the community to tell me the next mistakes.... :-)
[16:29:29] <mattie_p> that's an editor at heart talking, all right
[16:29:39] <janrinok> Bytram: rofl
[16:30:22] <mattie_p> Bytram, how does a security expert prevent vulnerabilities? Answer: Switch off the network.
[16:31:59] <janrinok> mattie_p: I thought the BOFH solution was to disconnect the users. Network now works without problem....

[16:34:19] <Woods> Huh.
[16:34:26] <Woods> Second time my computer froze...
[16:34:48] <janrinok> It happened to me earlier - at least the falling off the internet bit.
[16:35:51] <Woods> Aannnd nothing in the event log, of course.
[16:36:12] <Woods> It was right when Bytram said my name.
[16:36:16] <Bytram> apparently your computer does not think that it was important :/
[16:36:39] <Bytram> Woods: Blaming it on me?
[16:36:43] <Bytram> =)
[16:36:49] <Woods> Well I was, until just then.
[16:36:53] <janrinok> Ah Bytram - the man who can kill connections by voice command alone!
[16:37:44] * Bytram worked at a Boy Scout camp one summer; had to be able to make myself heard over the voices of 200+ scouts. Not. A. Problem!
[16:38:51] <janrinok> that's a long way from killing internet connections - obviously your powers are still developing. I'll return to cower in my dark corner.....
[16:39:43] * Bytram goes to look for a glowing spider
[16:39:51] <janrinok> lol
[16:40:30] <Woods> The Yodeling Spiderman
[16:40:40] * Bytram starts to feel a little funny, but notices he no longer needs a fladhlight! =)
[16:40:41] <mattie_p> that's notoriously unreliable method of gaining superpowers, you end up being able to shoot sticky goo and climb walls or stuff like that. Nothing good
[16:40:43] <janrinok> sometimes I think that we need to get out more - then something is said that makes me laugh so much I'm convinced that, if I were to leave, I would miss something important and funny!
[16:40:56] <Bytram> janrinok++
[16:40:56] <Bender> karma - janrinok: 5
[16:43:29] <janrinok> n1 have you seen the latest sub from Hugh Pickens? Speak of the devil.....
[16:44:58] <n1> i'll take a look
[16:45:09] <n1> hah
[16:45:10] <mattie_p> Hugh Pickens is the devil per janrinok, news at 11/
[16:45:25] <Woods> lol
[16:46:21] <janrinok> If you think that I am staying up until 06:00 just to watch your news at 11, then you are sadly mistaken.....
[16:47:11] <mattie_p> perfect, then we can grab more soundbites and air them without worrying over things like "the facts" or "truth"
[16:47:39] <n1> lol
[16:47:47] <mattie_p> never let the facts get in the way of a good story, my dad always said
[16:48:03] <mrcoolbp> lol
[16:48:07] <janrinok> I'm amazed. 'US News', 'facts' and 'truth' in the same sentence. I'm having a bad dream...
[16:48:28] <mrcoolbp> hi mattie_p, janrinok, n1, Woods, Bytram
[16:48:36] <janrinok> hi mrcoolbp - how's things?
[16:48:37] <mattie_p> hi mrcoolbp!
[16:48:45] Bytram is now known as Bytram|afk
[16:48:45] <mrcoolbp> not bad
[16:49:30] <mrcoolbp> mattie_p, what state are you moving to?
[16:49:37] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: looks like you frightened Bytram|afk away.
[16:49:43] <mrcoolbp> I do that
[16:49:52] <mattie_p> NY: specifically between Buffalo and Rochester
[16:49:52] <mrcoolbp> now that he's seen my face he just /runs
[16:49:59] <mrcoolbp> mattie_p: cool
[16:50:06] <mrcoolbp> only 5 hours from me = )
[16:50:21] <Woods> Mattie_p: That is NOT closer to the main group of Soylenters. Kansas City is.
[16:50:21] <mattie_p> good, maybe we'll finally do a meetup I can get to
[16:50:26] <janrinok> 5 hours - that's local to you guys, right?
[16:50:46] <mrcoolbp> kinda
[16:50:51] <mrcoolbp> this country is huge
[16:50:52] <mattie_p> Woods: hard to tell which hub is bigger. maybe we need a poll...
[16:50:58] <Woods> lol
[16:51:20] <janrinok> can we all get to vote -except those that ask not to, or use gmail, or whatever?
[16:51:31] <mrcoolbp> Woods: Bytram, myself, matt_, and NCommander are all in the North East
[16:51:36] <mrcoolbp> also Blackmoore
[16:51:40] <janrinok> and then repeat the vote with fewer options
[16:51:52] <mattie_p> of course, we'd need at least three options that specify why people aren't answering
[16:52:02] <mrcoolbp> ug, more vote jokes? Those will never end...
[16:52:22] <Woods> Mrcoolbp: Not yet, there is still a second and third round of vote jokes!
[16:52:24] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: not aimed at you in particular. Sorry if I touched a nerve..
[16:52:37] <mrcoolbp> nah it's fine, I'm soo over it actually
[16:52:50] * mrcoolbp pokes fun at self
[16:52:51] <janrinok> you fibber!
[16:52:52] <Woods> They will never go away, they are now the meta
[16:52:56] <mrcoolbp> yup
[16:53:01] <mrcoolbp> just gotta accept that
[16:53:04] <mrcoolbp> = )
[16:53:09] <Woods> It happens.
[16:53:35] <janrinok> at least you didn't release your trianing story to the world!
[16:53:42] <janrinok> training*
[16:53:44] <mrcoolbp> Guys: again, Editing team is doing a great job, I know it's tough, I think you guys are working really hard and make a great team. Keep it up!
[16:53:53] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: lol
[16:53:55] <Woods> Aw shucks.
[16:54:06] * janrinok blushes and looks coy
[16:54:19] * mrcoolbp bats eyelashes at janrinok
[16:54:25] * Bytram|afk has to get ready for the day; will peek in before I head out.
[16:54:33] <janrinok> not _that_ coy
[16:54:39] <mrcoolbp> (have a good one Bytram!)
[16:54:44] <janrinok> Bytram|afk: have a good one!
[16:54:47] * mrcoolbp takes it back than?
[16:54:51] <n1> take care, Bytram|afk
[16:56:21] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: over the weekend we got down to 3 stories and that included the rubbish! It got a bit hairy but I don't think the outside world noticed.
[16:56:34] <mrcoolbp> I saw
[16:56:42] <mrcoolbp> you guys are killin' it
[16:57:04] <mrcoolbp> what we need now is a recruitment for more users
[16:57:06] <Woods> I like what Hugh Fritas has to say about it.
[16:57:27] <janrinok> you mean papas pickens?
[16:58:04] <Woods> That does not roll off the tongue as well.
[16:58:09] <janrinok> I'd like to hit 1 story an hour, but when the submissions aren't there it cannot be done on wishful thinking alone.
[16:58:38] <Woods> I dream of a day where we have 50+ stories in the queue, and only the best, most recent ones can be used.
[16:58:38] <n1> that is the problem, we can do one story an hour, until we dont have any for 3 or 4...
[16:59:17] <janrinok> But perhaps HP's submission will spur some of the community into action... OK, probably not but I can dream.
[16:59:50] <n1> i dont think the point he made about 'during the day' is accurate either - engaging submissions seem to get picked up regardless of when they're posted
[17:00:15] <janrinok> And going to a slower output at night - whose night? It will become a US site which we promised we would try hard to avoid.
[17:00:21] <n1> aye
[17:00:36] <n1> thats pretty much my point too
[17:00:52] <Woods> Agreed.
[17:00:55] <n1> i've had a few batches of good stories that have run over night, and by the time i check the next day
[17:01:01] <n1> if they're good stories theyve had comments
[17:01:07] <n1> and at a time where few US users would be active
[17:01:29] <janrinok> perhaps the 'muricans' just have insomnia?
[17:01:36] <Woods> Probably.
[17:01:42] <janrinok> not like us Yurpeans
[17:01:48] <n1> and i think a steady stream works, because that means when ever you check it first, there will always be several new stories
[17:02:01] <mrcoolbp> 54% of visits come from US
[17:02:08] <mrcoolbp> the rest are spread out over the globe
[17:02:25] <janrinok> any really unexpected or obscure places?
[17:03:15] <n1> i'm pretty pleased about that - 54% US seems reasonable
[17:03:29] * janrinok doesn't count Aus or NZ as obscure....
[17:03:45] <n1> the old site had a habit of making it appear that 90-95% of the hits were from US
[17:03:50] * mrcoolbp is looking at the "map" trying to figure out what obscure would entail
[17:03:53] <n1> the rest of us were just an inconvinience
[17:04:04] <mrcoolbp> 4 visits from Korea
[17:04:09] <mrcoolbp> 5 from Jordan
[17:04:18] <mrcoolbp> 1 from Argentina
[17:04:32] <janrinok> That's not a bad spread so far!
[17:04:41] <mrcoolbp> 2 from Morrocco
[17:04:59] <Woods> What about Europe?
[17:04:59] <mrcoolbp> 1 from UAE
[17:05:22] <mrcoolbp> Serbia, Romania, Croatia all have a few
[17:05:24] <Woods> Better question: Which is next highest after USA?
[17:05:34] <janrinok> Woods: well, what about europe? Are you classing us as unexpected or obscure, or perhaps both? :-)
[17:05:45] <n1> alexa thinks a 23% of the hits come from south africa...
[17:05:50] <mrcoolbp> The bigger countries (including janrinok's) have around 15
[17:05:50] <n1> doesn't seem right.
[17:06:04] <mrcoolbp> South Africa is .3 % = )
[17:06:08] <Woods> I assume Europe is the second highest.
[17:06:34] <mrcoolbp> oooh, Germany has 4.2 % (~80 visits)
[17:06:40] <n1> there seems to be quite a few UK users
[17:06:48] <mrcoolbp> UK is 9%
[17:06:55] <mrcoolbp> ~200 visits
[17:06:56] <janrinok> but Europe will not be counted as a single entity, it's a region rather than an accountable country
[17:07:07] <mrcoolbp> UK is a single entity
[17:07:21] <mrcoolbp> France, Spain, Italy, etc. are all seperate in piwik
[17:07:34] <n1> what about .nl? i often connect through a netherlands vpn
[17:07:43] <janrinok> are the piwik stats available for all to see?
[17:08:18] <Woods> Ah
[17:08:38] <mrcoolbp> nl 42 visits 2.2% (more than france)
[17:08:47] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: you'd need an account
[17:08:51] <mrcoolbp> from NCommander
[17:09:06] <janrinok> The Dutch are usually fluent English speakers, the French only when they have to be.
[17:09:10] <mrcoolbp> ah
[17:09:29] <n1> the Dutch seem to be better at English that most native speakers.
[17:09:43] <janrinok> Scandavians are also quite good at English.
[17:09:47] <mrcoolbp> we are getting around 1,600 unique/day
[17:09:52] <n1> and that does seem to be the common theme with the french.
[17:10:43] <mrcoolbp> Andriod: 23%, Windows: 7 21%, and Linux is 14%
[17:10:48] <janrinok> They have their own tech sites, but my French isn't really up to grappling with technical French.
[17:11:15] <mrcoolbp> we have 7 referrals from m./.org
[17:11:18] <n1> i'd imagine the same applies to germany, they have their own tech news sites, of i would assume high quality
[17:11:36] <mrcoolbp> Germany seemed kinda high to me actually
[17:11:49] <mrcoolbp> anything else you guys want to know?
[17:12:07] <mrcoolbp> y'all should know your audie-- er community
[17:12:14] <mrcoolbp> = )
[17:12:15] <janrinok> Yes, but we already have a submitter (I forget who) who manages to pull the best German articles out from time to time.
[17:12:16] <n1> hah
[17:12:37] <n1> yeah, ive seen a couple of those
[17:12:56] <janrinok> mrcoolbp: thx for that - quite enlightening for me, at least.
[17:13:06] <mrcoolbp> no prob
[17:13:42] <n1> it's interesting, and i'm really pleased that the community isn't all American
[17:13:45] <janrinok> I read the russian sites but, to be honest, they are not up to much.
[17:14:16] <n1> that doesn't surprise me.
[17:14:23] <mrcoolbp> when looking only at Unique Visits, the US drops to 35%
[17:14:44] <n1> i'd assume japan, korea, france and germany have the highest non-english quality in tech/sci news
[17:14:53] <janrinok> They keep their research to themselves, and only share something when they think they can mock the west for it!
[17:15:17] <Woods> mrcoolbp: Shame the stats track the staff as well.
[17:15:36] <mrcoolbp> yeah, I'm sure we could exclude us with a cookie or something
[17:15:49] <Woods> That would be a good idea
[17:15:49] <n1> janrinok, that doesn't seem like a bad thing, in the competitive global market
[17:16:02] <mrcoolbp> japan: 10 visits (.3%)
[17:16:02] <n1> from a russian perspective at least
[17:16:08] <Woods> Is there a "time spent on site" stat? Because if so, I am sure we are skewing it.
[17:16:21] <janrinok> true - we once thought that the end of the cold war would bring more cooperation - we were wrong!
[17:16:27] <mrcoolbp> Russian Federation 18 (.9%)
[17:16:58] <n1> much the same with China, in my opinion, if we're stupid enough to give them everything, we can't be mad if they use it for their own benefit.
[17:17:15] <mrcoolbp> China 11 (.6%)
[17:17:16] <janrinok> n1: agreed
[17:17:24] <n1> can't expect china to manufacture everything and not take notes on it.
[17:17:37] <janrinok> time for me to go for a while - see you guys later, I hope
[17:17:44] <Woods> Bye
[17:17:44] <n1> take care, janrinok
[17:18:18] <mrcoolbp> later janrinok!
