[15:12:45] <janrinok> hi again guys - anyone here?
[15:12:58] <Bytram|away> janrinok: nope.
[15:12:59] <Bytram|away> =)
[15:13:03] Bytram|away is now known as Bytram
[15:13:24] <janrinok> Bytram: hi - how's things on this fine holiday?
[15:13:32] <Bytram> janrinok: fyi, I added a paragraph to the SanDisk SSD story with specs on the high-speed SSD
[15:13:37] <Bytram> holiday?
[15:14:34] <janrinok> thx for the story add. Depending on your politics, its May Day, International Workers' Day, May Bank Holiday - Only the USA don't play.....
[15:14:49] <Bytram> weather isn't so pleasant here; low 40's (F) and raining.
[15:14:57] <Bytram> May Day! May Day!
[15:15:03] <Bytram> !woop
[15:15:03] <deadpeas> woop woop woop (\/) (;,,;) (\/)
[15:15:10] <janrinok> Lovely sunny day here too....!
[15:15:17] <Bytram> LOL!
[15:15:52] <Bytram> It's my first day off after 6-days-in-a-row.
[15:16:02] <Bytram> trying to catch up on things (e.g. laundry)
[15:16:11] <janrinok> So it is a holiday of sorts for you then.....
[15:16:28] <Bytram> well, I guess you could put it that way.
[15:17:03] <janrinok> I'm doing laundry too, but it is hardly interfering with my doing nothing else!
[15:17:21] <Bytram> that's a great attitude!
[15:17:53] <Bytram> I've got a couple appointments today, some coding to do, and maybe some relaxation, too.
[15:18:17] <janrinok> If you get a moment could you please do the 2nd ed check on my other stories? There are not many eds about today.
[15:18:54] <janrinok> LamX is of with a sick child, and I suspect n1 is celebrating the holiday with the rest of Europe.
[15:19:02] <Bytram> will do. I notice you get the queue pretty well filled up before I get on in the morning here. thanks for all your hard work!
[15:19:23] <Bytram> I'll take a quick look. back in a bit.
[15:19:57] <janrinok> Well, there were no other pressures today. All my normal household chores get put on hold for holidays. Only the essential task of looking after Soph and doing the cooking.
[15:21:28] <Bytram> good for you, just don't get mixed up and try to cook Soph, ok?

[15:23:30] <Bytram> janrinok: in the OpenSSH story, I don't think a link to /. would go over too well here. " recently adopted crypto from DJ Bernstein." I'd suggest following that link and referring directly to its destination here. Otherwise looks good. Let me know when it's updated.
[15:23:58] <janrinok> ok
[15:27:50] <janrinok> Done - removed the link because it is duplicated later in the piece.
[15:28:23] <Bytram> thanks! Am reading the programming article now.
[15:30:19] <janrinok> Just for interest, the extra paragraph you added is covered by my first link - but it reads better now.
[15:32:08] <Bytram> agreed. the story mentions a tradeoff, presents the high-capacity side, but left me hanging as to the high-speed side. :/ So, I added that in for those who do not read TFA.
[15:36:14] <janrinok> Do not read the TFA! After I gave up part of my morning crafting an introduction to it! Pah! Behead the lot of them....
[15:37:41] <Bytram> janrinok: /nick RedQueen Off with their heads!
[15:38:17] <janrinok> I _am_ in France. The guillotine was once popular...
[15:38:28] <Bytram> janrinok: LOL!
[15:39:53] <janrinok> I've tried to find a pan large enough for Soph that will fit on the cooker. We haven't got one, so I suspect that she is safe from the accident you suggested I take care to avoid earlier on.
[15:40:25] * janrinok notes that wife gave him funny looks during the measuring of pans.
[15:40:49] <Woods> Janrinok, it sounds an awful lot like you are trying to cook your wife.
[15:41:13] <janrinok> Hi Woods - no just the opposite, I'm trying to avoid accidentally cooking my wife....
[15:41:28] <Woods> Hate it when that happens.
[15:42:05] <janrinok> It was a necessary health and safety check that I needed to carry out to convince myself that Bytram was talking crap earlier....
[15:42:28] <janrinok> How's things with you?
[15:42:49] <janrinok> ...while we are all enjoying a holiday and you Americans are not....
[15:42:50] <Woods> Pretty good.
[15:42:59] <Woods> Aw, what holiday?
[15:43:15] <janrinok> Depending on your politics, its May Day, International Workers' Day, May Bank Holiday - Only the USA don't play.....
[15:43:32] <Woods> Yup, surely I have never heard of it. It is alright though, I am taking tomorrow off.
[15:44:07] <janrinok> you save your day for July 4, Europe and Asia celebrate today!
[15:44:28] <Woods> Quick unrelated question: At the end of "Supreme Court Strikes a Blow Against Coal Power", why the editors note about Hugh Fritas?
[15:44:35] <Woods> Ahhh, I se
[15:44:37] <Woods> e
[15:45:03] <janrinok> Because it is PF / HP who has been garnering comments about us copying from the other site.
[15:45:38] <Woods> Fair enough.
[15:45:58] <janrinok> http://en.wikipedia.org
[15:46:51] <Bytram> janrinok: sry. was afk with laundry.
[15:46:56] <Bytram> LOL on the pan check!
[15:47:00] <janrinok> Seems the Americans moved it to Labor Day
[15:47:21] * Bytram notes he labors more days than he used to do
[15:47:24] <Woods> Ah, yes.
[15:47:28] <Woods> In September.
[15:47:31] <janrinok> ah, laundry - brb
[15:47:55] <Bytram> janrinok: as for the programming article... the "personally, I think" was that from the author or you?
[16:01:48] <janrinok> from the author
[16:02:04] <janrinok> or. submitter, more correctly
[16:02:07] <nick> hi
[16:02:12] <janrinok> ni nick
[16:02:12] nick is now known as n1
[16:02:16] <Bytram> k, thanks... busy with coal article. back in a bit
[16:02:39] <n1> how are things, janrinok?
[16:03:24] <janrinok> good - enjoying May Day holiday - which the Americans do not recognise.
[16:04:12] <janrinok> are you in the office today nick?
[16:04:37] <n1> well it's not a real 'holiday' here either, and the americans are even less inclined to give themselves a day off.
[16:05:02] <Woods> :(
[16:05:03] <janrinok> Everyone else I know in the UK is off
[16:05:17] <n1> yesterday was office day for me
[16:05:22] <janrinok> The Americans have Labor Day in September
[16:05:28] * Woods whimpers "murica"
[16:05:41] <Woods> Yeah! And I will SO rub it in your faces then.
[16:05:54] <n1> 5th of may is the next holiday here apparently
[16:06:09] <janrinok> Ah, we'll have another holiday in the list by then.
[16:06:16] <Woods> Bah!
[16:06:51] <janrinok> But it will be banned by EU regulations which will state that you have 5 legs to take part
[16:07:03] <n1> Woods, it's not all great - makes no difference to me, except that i can't get things done.
[16:07:20] <n1> and there are less and less people in 'normal' employment who are entitled to the public holidays, afaik
[16:07:30] <Woods> Well that is what you get for running your own company from home, n1.
[16:07:40] <janrinok> The French celebrate it big style. Shops are closed, firework display tonight etc
[16:08:35] <n1> Woods, more and more people are pushed into it, and it's not usually for their own benefit, 'contractor' or 'zero hours'
[16:08:45] <n1> janrinok, good for the french
[16:08:58] <n1> and on that, it's french week in lidl, including snails.
[16:10:14] <Bytram> janrinok: I updated the coal article; shrank/moved some of the links so they weren't so long; moved a paragraph to extended copy; o/w looked good. take a look.
[16:10:25] <n1> janrinok, your friends in the UK must have some flexibility if they're taking today off.
[16:10:53] <Bytram> janrinok: btw, it irks me that the article uses "EPA" and "E.P.A." but the latter is exactly what they wrote, so it should not be changed. :/
[16:12:04] <Woods> Bytram: I know right?
[16:12:23] <janrinok> Bytram: thx - and I agree.
[16:13:22] <janrinok> n1: for my sister, the entire place is closed today so it wasn't a case of flexibility. As for the others, I don't know.
[16:13:55] <n1> weird, because i looked it up, the holiday on the 5th is what we have instead of having today off
[16:14:00] <n1> because it has to be on a monday or what ever
[16:14:15] <janrinok> n1: Do you like escargot? I like them grilled in their shells with garlic butter.
[16:15:20] <n1> i've never tried to be honest, doesn't seem very appetizing
[16:15:57] <n1> thats actually exactly what lidl has this week
[16:16:08] <n1> '12 escargots with a garlic butter filling'
[16:16:14] <janrinok> Very similar in texture to whelks etc but more flavoursome, IMHO. Not everyone's cup of tea though....
[16:16:15] <n1> for £1.99
[16:17:01] <janrinok> Fiddely to eat so good for a starter or snack but not for a main course.
[16:18:35] <n1> i'll start with the frogs legs and work my way up to the snails ;)
[16:19:45] * Bytram wishes the stories contained a link to the original submission; it's available on the other site.
[16:20:20] <janrinok> n1 - ah the May Bank Holiday version - is always tagged on a weekend. Up north, some have 'International Workers' Day' which is always fixed by date to coincide with their 'comrades' around the world. Might be that...?
[16:21:05] <janrinok> Bytram: I'm not sure what you are getting at. You mean the unedited and edited stories are both linked to?
[16:21:13] <n1> That sounds more likely, and something London would obviously avoid.
[16:21:36] <n1> Thanks for that bit of info, something i didn't know.
[16:21:58] <Bytram> janrinok: at /., the published story includes a link to the original submission. It would be nice if I could refer to that original submission. that's all.
[16:22:08] <janrinok> It's much less common nowadays, but 20 or 30 years ago it was more usual.
[16:22:41] <n1> you can link to the original I think, Bytram
[16:22:59] <janrinok> Bytram: we get the same link in the editor, you could always copy it into the story from there. But I'm not sure what purpose it would serve?
[16:23:03] <n1> if you go to the submission in the users page, it contains the non-edited version i believe
[16:23:26] <Bytram> n1: tried that; once it's approved, it pointed me at the article I'm reviewing.
[16:23:44] <Bytram> janrinok: the other site, IIRC, always included a link to the original submission.
[16:23:48] <janrinok> The one on the editor page doesn't change
[16:24:05] <Bytram> maybe i missed it? brb
[16:24:41] <janrinok> Bytram: yes I understand - but why? If you want the original you might as well get rid of the editors. And who will check it if it is automatically included. Links to porn, politics or whatever?
[16:25:22] <n1> i dont think it adds any value, including such a link
[16:25:55] <Bytram> good points, but I would notice something "odd" in a posted story there, then look at the original submission, and say to myself "Oh, that's what they submitted" not the editor's mess-up.
[16:26:06] <janrinok> And if you think you have got something wrong during the edit process, re-enter the editor and the original submission link is there for you to access.
[16:26:12] <Bytram> I guess I'm just used to having had that available, that's all.
[16:26:28] <Bytram> not a big deal.
[16:26:37] <n1> well, if you notice something 'odd' i would say it is the editors mess up really.
[16:26:45] <janrinok> Just take the story you are unhappy with back into the editor, and then access the original submission link on that page.
[16:27:16] <janrinok> I might have messed something up, it's always worth a check...
[16:27:23] <Bytram> janrinok: yep, I *just* found the link on the edit page "submission" which points to the original story!
[16:27:31] * Bytram slinks back to his corner
[16:27:55] <janrinok> Bytram: Headers on this page include 'Editing_Process' which describes the very link.... lol
[16:28:20] <Bytram> sometimes I read but don't fully understand. :/
[16:29:14] <janrinok> rofl - we have all done it. Just today - it's your turn...
[16:29:23] <Woods> Oohh, I call next.
[16:29:54] <janrinok> If only it were that easy - it normally gets me when I least want or need it!
[16:29:54] <Bytram> I'm gonna take a stab at the neutrino article.
[16:30:22] * Bytram notices the neutrinos are unaffected
[16:30:42] <Woods> Bytram: Good luck making changes to them!
[16:30:55] * janrinok notices angry neutrinos carrying knives are heading from CERN to America...
[16:31:11] <Woods> Aaahh, my body.
[16:31:14] <Bytram> Woods: actually, one of the interesting aspects of neutrinos is they seem to change themselves, and we don't know why!
[16:31:27] <janrinok> camouflage....
[16:31:42] <Woods> I was going to do that one, but I reconsidered putting two space-y articles next to each other.
[16:32:11] <janrinok> You can always edit now and time them to be separated.
[16:32:30] <Woods> I never think like that though, Jarinok, that makes too much sense!
[16:32:35] <janrinok> You don't have to edit in sequence
[16:33:09] <n1> lol
[16:33:36] <janrinok> Sometimes, when I'm editing a story, I'll time it to apply to the most popular geographic area. A good US story during the middle of the US night is pointless.
[16:33:38] <n1> i've done a bunch of editing before, seen that i've had stories on related subjects next to each other
[16:33:41] <n1> and rearranged a few times

[16:48:27] <mint> where do we surrender...?
[16:48:42] <n1> baguettes at the ready
[16:49:00] <mint> I vacate my nose in your general direction...
[16:49:03] <n1> rofl

[16:50:15] <janrinok> gosh - I do like having days off when I can play...
[16:50:58] <janrinok> I'd normally have only just arrived within the last 30 minutes and be working to get my daily quota of stories in...

[16:52:23] <n1> having a more relaxed day?
[16:52:36] <mint> I'm trying to get the colours and layout the way I like it
[16:53:03] <janrinok> Yes, a much more relaxed day. Even Soph is having a 'chill' day.
[16:53:04] <n1> i'm going to be out this evening, but i will be back about midnight (UK) to do some stories
[16:53:27] <janrinok> you enjoy yourself and remember, don't drink and post...
[16:53:37] -!- mint has quit [Client Quit]
[16:54:21] <janrinok> LamX is off today - one of his children is a bit poorly.
[16:54:25] <n1> i'll be driving too, so i have two reasons not to drink ;)
[16:56:17] <janrinok> travelling far?
[16:57:30] <n1> just to a friends a couple towns away, maybe stay the night at the friend who keeps a bed spare for me.
[16:59:23] <n1> it's not pratical for me to stay at home often... i have a garage where i store my work equipment, which is a lot closer to my friends, and leaving my car here with anything in it has a habit of ending badly, especially when sometimes i end up two or three streets away.
[17:01:16] <janrinok> It's funny what we become accustomed to - here, you can still leave your front door unlocked when you go out for a walk, the neighbours will bring your washing in if it starts raining, and people go out of their way to be helpful.
[17:01:30] <n1> also the difference of me being here vs there, which is only a few miles away
[17:01:40] <n1> can add or take away an hour on a journey to a clients
[17:01:52] <n1> traffic free it's a 15minute drive.
[17:02:15] <janrinok> that's understandable. And nobody wants to be wasting time stuck in traffic.
[17:02:49] <n1> neighbours bringing your washing in for you sounds very unbritish
[17:03:13] <n1> here they'd be more likely to film it on their phone as the wind and rain blows your clothes all over the street
[17:03:21] <janrinok> lol
[17:04:05] <n1> ive never spoken to any of the neighbours since i've been here
[17:04:11] <janrinok> You get to know which neighbours want you to do that and which are happy for the washing to stay in the rain.
[17:04:48] <janrinok> We have people here dropping in from time-to-time just to ask how Soph is - we have no idea of their names!
[17:05:14] <n1> that sounds like a mixed blessing
[17:06:02] <janrinok> Yes it is - we've been very polite in slowly educating them to only do it rarely, but I always cross the road now to let then know how things are when I see them outside.
[17:06:42] <janrinok> And, as the outsiders, they all know who _we_ are, but we are trying to learn 3600 odd names!
[17:06:49] <n1> differences in culture
[17:06:53] <Bytram> hi! Looking for a catchy Dept for the neutrino story. Any suggestions?
[17:07:01] <n1> and yeah, i'm imaging you're 'the english guy'
[17:07:05] <n1> so you stand out to them
[17:07:16] <Bytram> now-you-don't-see-them-and-now-you-don't ??
[17:07:38] <janrinok> Bytram: I'm still thinking - but that doesn't sound too bad.
[17:08:13] <janrinok> You can always mark it that for now, and go back if you have a brainwave later. Or just leave it blank. It's not compulsory.
[17:08:21] <Bytram> I've out it in there for now. the story *feels* like it needs another paragraph to it, but I'm drawing a blank and need to get going on my day.
[17:08:27] <Bytram> s/out/put/
[17:09:12] <Bytram> n1: watch it. I just saved it a few moments ago.
[17:09:30] <n1> yeah i'm not going to touch it
[17:09:35] <n1> but i'd suggest, change the timing?
[17:10:08] <Bytram> n1: agreed. I just picked some random time "far" into the future, didn't notice how much was already queued. brb
[17:10:56] <janrinok> Bytram: don't forget we should be aroung 60-90 mins spacing if the Nagger is on.
[17:11:04] <Bytram> yup
[17:11:09] <Bytram> going for about 90
[17:11:38] <n1> i'd move it to about 20:50
[17:13:24] <Bytram> n1: strange. it won't let me change the time. ??
[17:13:49] <n1> it will, i've noticed sometimes the field doesn't like being edited
[17:13:59] <n1> but i can't figure out why, it just happens at random
[17:14:13] <janrinok> has someone else got it open at the same time?
[17:14:15] <Bytram> I'll try getting out and going back in.
[17:14:16] <Bytram> nograb
[17:14:30] <Bytram> n1: you?
[17:14:37] <n1> im not on the story
[17:14:44] <Bytram> n1: k
[17:15:13] <n1> janrinok, you missed a minor crisis yesterday i think... i tried to accept/edit a story, and it wouldn't let me save it, or create a story..
[17:15:58] <janrinok> How did you resolve it?
[17:16:03] <n1> and the site briefly got completely broken trying to fix the issue, it was a bit of an odd one it seemed.
[17:16:09] <n1> let me see if i can find it, one sec
[17:16:34] <janrinok> Ah yes, some people complained of 503s as well. A server bug I expect.
[17:16:43] <n1> yeah, that was it
[17:17:58] <janrinok> Just had a PM explaining it.
[17:18:24] <n1> yeah, i pasted it ;)
[17:18:35] <Bytram> n1: I tried a ctrl-F5 to do a hard refresh; still couldn't change it. trying a logout / login now
[17:18:56] <n1> if you cant change it this time, leave the story
[17:18:57] <n1> and i'll try
[17:18:58] <janrinok> let me have a try first?
[17:19:06] <janrinok> OK n1 after you
[17:19:21] <Bytram> I just logged out; do your thing
[17:19:53] <n1> got it
[17:20:06] <Bytram> strange.
[17:20:08] <janrinok> solved!
[17:20:10] <n1> what i had to do was have my mouse just above the field
[17:20:17] <n1> over the date, not the time
[17:20:19] <n1> and then it let me select it
[17:20:37] <Bytram> urk? that is just toooooo strange.
[17:20:40] <n1> it seems to do that randomly, i assumed it was my browser causing it.
[17:21:01] <Bytram> I use FF LTS (24.5.0; justupdated last night)
[17:21:07] <Bytram> n1: you?
[17:21:17] <janrinok> More likely a nasty bit of slash getting confused....
[17:21:23] <n1> Opera 20.0.1387.91
[17:21:51] <janrinok> Ice Weasel and Epiphany
[17:21:58] <n1> try and go back on the story and carefully move the cursor around the field if you have time, see if it gives you the option to edit
[17:22:10] <Bytram> never tried opera; how "heavy" is it on memory?
[17:22:12] <Bytram> n1: k
[17:22:48] <n1> it used to be be very good on memory
[17:23:09] <n1> but they're not using their own engine anymore i believe
[17:23:53] <Bytram> n1: that is really really strange! I had to click on the top of the text box itself in order to be able to get into the field. !!??!!!!
[17:23:58] <Bytram> afk laundry
[17:24:22] <n1> yeah, thats what i have to do quite often
[17:24:35] <n1> im going to make a late lunch, as no doubt my dinner will also be late
[17:34:49] <Bytram> n1: Aha!! I figured it out.
[17:35:32] <Bytram> there is a padding-top stye of 1em for "Poll ID:" "Create Poll", "Link Story to Existing Poll"...
[17:36:04] <Bytram> that padding lands ON TOP of the "Comments Enable" drop-down list box and the date/time field.
[17:36:23] <Bytram> if I replace the intervening "<br>" with "<br><br>" it works just fine.
[17:36:52] * Bytram really REALLY likes the firebug addon
[17:37:39] <Bytram> the padding is set in line 721 of http://soylentnews.org
[17:39:27] <Bytram> well, that's where firebug said it was. :/ looking more
[17:39:45] <janrinok> Bytram: make sure you snag it to the dev team - it probably is quite a minor fix.
[17:40:09] <janrinok> I must go for a while - cu l8r
[17:40:16] janrinok is now known as janrinok|afk
[17:40:27] <Bytram> janrinok: I'm planning on that; just trying to further refine what/where things are wrong.

[20:56:18] <Woods> Howdy
[20:57:14] <n1> im just about to step out, but i shall be back in 4 hours or so, think you could add another story to the end of the queue, and then i can top it up for overnight when i get back from social functions.
[20:57:31] <n1> if not it's not big deal, there's enough to keep us going i think
[20:57:56] <Woods> Yes, I was going to put it out to tomorrow
[20:58:00] <Woods> I mean fill it out
[20:58:17] <Woods> And maybe a couple after that, since it is already at 22.
[20:58:21] <Woods> 22:00
[20:58:24] <n1> if you could do that, would be awesome
[20:58:30] <Woods> Consider it done.
[20:58:33] <n1> :D
[20:58:35] <n1> the system works!
