[14:07:55] <Bytram> If there's an editor here, I would appreciate a review of "Linux Support Progress": http://soylentnews.org

[15:16:59] <janrinok> hi guys
[15:17:51] <janrinok> hi guys
[15:17:51] <Woods> Hey Janrinok.
[15:17:58] <janrinok> hi Woods have a good w/e
[15:18:15] <Woods> yeah, pretty good, how about yourself?
[15:18:22] <janrinok> yeah, not bad.
[15:19:33] <janrinok> I managed to finish the Editing_Process in the wiki, which was a fair bit of work, and I'm pleased, but there are still typos and spolling mistooks to correct.
[15:20:25] <Woods> It happens, at least things got done!
[15:20:31] <Woods> I was not productive at all this weekend.
[15:20:46] <janrinok> how come?
[15:20:59] <Woods> I try to only be productive during the week
[15:21:10] <Woods> That way I can just relax and do nothing on the weekends.
[15:21:54] <janrinok> I understand, but that is when we could do with some help on here. But, your family must come first.
[15:23:53] <Woods> hmm. I suppose I could jump on in the mornings and post a few things.
[15:27:03] <janrinok> I've only had 2 days afk since I began in March and I'm hoping to take a week-long break. But we have to have enough eds to cover the period which is one (not the major) reason why we are looking for more eds. It's also why LamX is taking a break. He had been on solid since day 1 - Feb 16 - and he needed a break. He is posting but not IRC'ing at present.
[15:28:02] <janrinok> Actually, there are several reasons why LamX is taking it a bit easier, but one of them was his outstanding effort here for several months without a break.
[15:28:58] <janrinok> Anyway, what did you get up to. Anything exciting or interesting?
[15:30:31] <Woods> Oh no definitely nothing like that. Unless you consider playing Diablo with friends interesting.
[15:31:40] <janrinok> lol - hey, if it floats your boat then go for it.
[15:35:30] deadbeef is now known as deadpeasandlpant

[15:36:08] <janrinok> lol - deadpeas - I like that!
[15:52:18] <Woods> In "White house worried"... "computerphones". I have never heard that before.
[15:52:52] <Woods> I am going to change it to smartphones, unless you think it should stay.
[15:54:56] <janrinok> no change it
[15:55:20] <janrinok> although check the term computerphones doesn't mean a sub or superset of smartphones
[15:56:44] <Woods> Based on context, I do not believe so, but I will look it up just in case.
[15:56:52] <janrinok> OK thx

[16:43:33] <Woods> Janrinok: Did you delete the "Hacking Your Hospital" article?
[16:48:17] <janrinok> yes it was published on Saturday!
[16:48:26] <janrinok> ie. it was a dupe
[16:49:38] <janrinok> I sent Blackmoore an email explaining that we would mock him for 30 seconds on IRC!
[16:50:37] <Woods> Oh, oddly enough, I checked for dupes on all the other submissions I looked at this morning, but not that one.
[16:50:42] <Woods> Still failed, dang it.
[16:50:48] <janrinok> lol - np
[16:50:54] <Woods> Also, Blackmoore! You cad!
[16:51:25] <janrinok> As I'm sure we have already said - you will make all the same mistakes that _we_ all made (and often are still making!)
[16:51:36] <Woods> With 25 stores, you would think more of them would be more tech related.
[16:51:44] <Woods> At least I did not post it this time!
[16:51:49] <janrinok> Yes, its a worrying problem
[16:52:49] <Woods> I will try to submit something later.
[16:53:21] <janrinok> don't worry - just keep posting what we have, or at least the best of them.
[16:53:41] <Woods> I am going to put that Ubuntu review up
[17:00:29] <Woods> The Baltic Sea story department made me cringe, lol
[17:00:43] <janrinok> yes, me too.
[17:16:06] <Woods> Janrinok: I notice a bunch of single quotes (Instead of double quotes) in the "US Outsources Teacher" story. Should I leave it that way?
[17:16:37] <janrinok> Woods: The Mathematicians story is OK but there is nothing new in it. You might get a few 'so what' comments when it goes out.
[17:16:55] <janrinok> Woods: As long as it is readable and they are consistent, then it is fine.
[17:17:19] <janrinok> However, if they are mixed within a sentence, then they need correcting.
[17:17:36] <Woods> k
[17:18:33] <Woods> The line at the end "collect all the signals, all the time." is what led me to want to post it. But it may not give the amount of discussion I am hoping.
[17:18:49] <janrinok> Right - I have to be afk for an hour and a bit to look after my wife. Be back here in a while.
[17:19:42] <janrinok> Woods: yes, but Total Intelligence (I think that is the buzzword, has been around for about 2 or 3 years now). Let the story run and see what response you get.
[17:19:43] <Woods> K.
[17:20:02] <Woods> We shall see, I suppose.
[17:21:27] <janrinok> Woods: Your query above about the single quotes. They are taken from the source material - we never edit the source material if we are quoting it. It would be too easy to make a mistake and end up in trouble with the originator for claiming somehting that they didn't actually say.
[17:22:48] <Woods> Copy that.

[19:39:55] <janrinok> mrcool|afk: I've checked the FAQ - one minor suggestion - good piece of work!
[20:09:16] <n1> well, it's monday so that means my plan for the week has changed.
[20:09:26] <janrinok> lol hi n1
[20:11:47] <n1> how are you, janrinok?
[20:13:55] <janrinok> good, but I had a minor knee injury looked at by a doc this morning. Apparently, the right knee is falling to bits after years of running up and down hills with a bergan on!
[20:14:22] <Woods> Janrinok: Bergan?
[20:14:36] <n1> that doesn't sound so good :(
[20:14:37] <janrinok> rucksack - mil webbing etc
[20:15:12] <janrinok> well, that and my age didn't help....
[20:15:40] <janrinok> but I'm OK but ordered to rest my leg before x-rays in mid-May.
[20:15:49] <n1> get a knee support as well?
[20:16:33] <janrinok> doesn't do any good - the joint is not lubricating as it should, and I've been unable to spray WD-40 inside....
[20:17:09] <Woods> Janrinok: May I suggest silicon lubricant?
[20:17:19] <n1> sorry to hear that, and thats a shame as wd-40 fixes everything
[20:17:44] <janrinok> woods - sorry that was Brit humour, I mean the joint inside my knee!
[20:18:15] <n1> i'm stepping out, i shall be back again in an hourish, are we good on stories for another 2 or so, to give me time to make dinner?
[20:18:30] <janrinok> yeah we're good for a few hours yet
[20:18:32] <Woods> I got the joke, suggesting silicon lubricant is my usual response. At least WD-40 is known worldwide. :P
[20:18:50] <janrinok> sry Woods my apologies then.
[20:18:58] <Woods> No worries. :)
[20:21:17] <janrinok> The Facebook story looks like another attempt to collect every bit of information about everybody all the time....
[20:22:46] <Woods> I know right?
[20:23:00] <janrinok> They just don't stop trying, do they?
[20:23:04] <Woods> I feel like they are trying to catch up to Google, but just end up looking creepy.
[20:23:35] <janrinok> I reckon they are all in it together on behalf of USA Inc.
[20:24:21] <Woods> I love that company
[20:24:35] <janrinok> lol - you might be slightly biased...
[20:24:56] <Woods> Me? Naaahhh.
[20:25:01] <janrinok> rofl
[20:25:05] * Woods waves the flag at his desk
[20:25:20] <janrinok> does the desk wave a flag back?
[20:25:43] <Woods> lol. No, it mostly just sits there... Siletly judging me condescendingly.
[20:25:58] <janrinok> desks do that....
[20:26:12] <Woods> Yours does it too, I suppose.
[20:26:21] <Woods> Maybe they are in cahoots.
[20:27:24] <janrinok> in a very judgemental way, as if to say 'stop wasting time on the computer - go write an opus work that will make you famous'. When it gets too hissy I just slam the drawers a lot until it behaves.
[20:27:56] <Woods> Showing it who is boss is definitely a good strategy.
[20:28:11] <Woods> But, my desk has been here longer than I have, I think it may be higher on the pay scale.
[20:28:27] <janrinok> Usually yes, but I don't think it gives shit what I think...
[20:29:33] <Woods> I call mine Desky McFlatsurface.
[20:30:08] <janrinok> a very descriptive name - mine is called 'desk'. I've got no imagination, so they say...
[20:30:33] <Woods> It happens, I am sure you will figure something out.
[20:31:43] <janrinok> I set fire to my first desk. Not indoors of course. But the last time I moved house it wasn't worth the effort of taking it to bits and putting it back together again. So it became part of a farewell bonfire party.
[20:32:02] <Woods> Haha, that sounds great!
[20:32:22] <Woods> Did you announce the sacrifice to the gods of the office?
[20:32:41] <janrinok> Now _that_ desk knew who was the boss.
[20:32:45] <Woods> lol yes
[20:33:07] <janrinok> No but as I was changing country as well has home - we had a hell of a good party!
[20:33:28] <janrinok> s/well has/well as/
[20:34:32] <Woods> Is it you that lives in France, or was that n1?
[20:34:40] <janrinok> that's me
[20:35:21] <Woods> Does that mean you know French as well?
[20:36:13] <janrinok> Not brilliantly, but I can get by in general. I was at the docs today no problem, did the shopping, I am buying a new car, so all the normal sort of things.
[20:36:40] <Woods> Sounds awesome, how do you like it there?
[20:37:00] <Woods> I have a hard time picturing anything outside the USA.
[20:37:57] <janrinok> My best foreign language is Russian, I spent 18 months learning that and lived in Moscow for 3 years. I speak some German, because I've also lived there in the past, and a few other languages where there have been wars in the last 25 years or so. But I don't try to keep the latter up to date.
[20:39:37] <Woods> I know like 25 words of Spanish. :(
[20:39:58] <janrinok> Living in any other country is always an opportunity. People are usually easy to get on with if you try to speak their language. But different cultures and histories have so much that we can all learn from. It's easy to since in our own 'bubble' and think that everything 'out there' is strange. Go and find out.
[20:40:23] <janrinok> its easy to live in*
[20:41:09] <n1> go see somewhere else, even if it's not to live, just to experience it and try and see things through the eyes of another culture and context
[20:41:23] <Woods> I am hoping to one day live in Japan. The hard part would be finding a job, methinks.
[20:42:12] <janrinok> NCommander has travelled widely, and so have quite a few of the other staff on here. You have to go anywhere on _their_ terms to be accepted, but you can go on _your_ terms if all you want is a holiday.
[20:42:16] <n1> japan is somewhere i forgot to mention in our conversation yesterday, janrinok... never been would love to.
[20:42:20] <janrinok> n1 - Tesco's open or not?
[20:42:30] <n1> i'm actually about to go to lidl
[20:42:33] <janrinok> n1 so would I.
[20:42:37] <janrinok> lol
[20:43:29] <n1> not sure about living in japan, don't think i could get on with their work ethic or to the extreme degree 'respect' is everything
[20:43:30] <janrinok> the list is good upto midnight UTC. I might add a few more in a while but I'm taking a short break now.
[20:44:23] <n1> ok, awesome. i'll make sure i get a few more up this evening so don't put yourself out, you deserve a break :)
[20:44:34] <Woods> Janrinok: I am going to use up my mod points, and look for some more stories to submit.
[20:44:40] <janrinok> what you getting from lidl?
[20:45:17] <n1> that depends what they have in, i tend to go and see what takes my fancy... i'm craving some garlic bread is about all i can say right now lol
[20:45:18] <janrinok> Woods: OK, but don't bust a gut submitting more - there are 23 in the list. The Nagger hasn't appeared yet.
[20:45:42] <Woods> Janrinok: hehe, alright. I will try to find a high-quality one. (Impossible)
[20:45:45] <janrinok> If you find a particularly good one though - go for it!
[20:46:44] <janrinok> lidl + microwave = large gut!
[20:47:21] <n1> hah
[20:47:41] <n1> it certainly can
[20:47:48] <janrinok> lidl + microwave + beer = large gut but who cares?
[20:48:05] <Woods> ^^^ this
[20:48:08] <n1> although the only microwave meal of theirs i like is the chicken tikka masala
[20:48:41] <janrinok> I haven't tried that one. Their 'spicy' offerings here are for the French palate - bland as toast!
[20:49:42] <n1> i havn't really had anything properly 'spicy' from lidl, although i bought some 'chopped chillies' from there
[20:49:45] <n1> and now i add that to quite a lot
[20:50:57] <n1> but the tikka masala is actually reasonable quality, especially if you compare it to their other offerings like the shepherds pie or spag bol
[20:50:58] <janrinok> I have a selection of hot sauces from Jamaica, Mexico, etc - and I add those to quite a few dishes that I make but in moderation - Soph is supersensitive these days. I then put loads more on mine!
[20:51:32] <n1> lidl sometimes have a 'afrikana jerk bbq sauce' which is one of my favorites
[20:51:39] <n1> if you ever see it, you should get it
[20:51:49] <janrinok> sounds good - thx for the recommendation
[20:52:06] <n1> lidl forces me to stockpile as sometimes the good stuff only comes round once a year
[20:52:12] <janrinok> brb 5 - its that time again
[20:52:20] <n1> ok, im going to go lidl finally

[21:11:20] <janrinok> hi LaminatorX ! welcome back
[21:11:31] <LaminatorX> Hullo.
[21:11:42] <janrinok> how's things?
[21:12:39] <LaminatorX> I landed a free ticket to see Arcade Fire last night. Things are very very good just now.
[21:13:14] <janrinok> Pleased to hear it. Woods is around and coming along nicely, n1 has just popped out to buy something to eat.
[21:14:43] <janrinok> If you get very, very bored, you could cast an eye over my Editorial Process in the wiki - I would value your views and criticism. But it is not anything to get too excited about.
[21:15:52] <LaminatorX> Work is slow at the moment. I'll look it over.
[21:16:03] <janrinok> How's the family?
[21:18:26] <LaminatorX> Great. The younger daughter just turned three, and the 5ive year old put her foot through a board at Tae Kwon Do class. (Not a particulatly thick board, but it wasn't scored or anything.)
[21:18:58] <janrinok> So you're sitting there proud as any Dad could be - life is certainly good!
[21:24:41] <LaminatorX> How go thins in France?
[21:24:48] <LaminatorX> "things"
[21:26:34] <janrinok> Wife is doing ok, had her parents here for about 10 days. They helped a lot around the house so that was a bit of a relief. Other, than that, much the same as it usually does. I'm planning on taking a week-long break just for a rest but I haven't got any firm dates yet.
[21:27:43] <LaminatorX> Sounds good.
[21:28:58] <janrinok> Yeah, we probably won't go anywhere - because that becomes a battle in itself when Soph has to travel - but we will do something different and have a change of routine.
[21:32:33] <n1> hey LaminatorX
[21:34:56] <LaminatorX> Hey there.
[21:36:11] <n1> good to see you're still alive in more than just a name on the stories queue :)
[21:38:49] <LaminatorX> Rumors that I was replaced by a chatbot are entirely without substance.
[21:39:06] <n1> just what a chatbot would say!
[21:39:36] <Woods> You mean that lovely conversation I had with LaminatorXBot was all fake?!
[21:40:12] <LaminatorX> It's all as real as you feel.
[21:41:54] <Woods> I cannot possibly think of a non-creepy way to continue this conversation.
[21:42:58] <LaminatorX> Success1
[21:43:03] <n1> lol
[21:43:06] <janrinok> with what?
[21:43:25] <janrinok> you mean creepybot?
[21:43:43] * LaminatorX nods.
[21:43:55] * Woods double nods.
[21:44:17] * janrinok thinks it still looks like one of FunPikas bots....
[21:45:22] <janrinok> And what culinary delights did you select from your local food emporium tonight n1?
[21:47:13] <n1> my own 'custom' curry... i can't believe they didnt have any fries/wedges or sweetcorn....
[21:47:21] <janrinok> lol
[21:48:03] <n1> i start with their 'hot chicken curry' as a base, add more, better quality chicken and other herbs and spices
[21:48:31] <n1> and usually serve it on a bed of potato wedges... today the only option i had was hash browns, so we'll see how that goes...
[21:48:45] <janrinok> LaminatorX: I can dutifully inform you that n1's eating regime has not improved during your time away from this chan
[21:48:58] <n1> lol
[21:49:02] <LaminatorX> I had an artichoke Tartine last night, along with carmalized grapes.
[21:49:18] <n1> i eat much better when i convince other people to cook for me lol
[21:49:21] <janrinok> you mean you burnt it in the microwave?
[21:50:45] <n1> i saw raisins "infused" with cola yesterday
[21:52:01] <janrinok> Actually, I might try making that tartine. Artichokes are grown round here and are plentiful.
[21:52:38] <n1> sounds like it needs meat...
[21:53:08] <janrinok> well, it would do for one course for us Europeans.
[21:53:37] <janrinok> Then follow it with curry and chips, then treacle sponge and custard
[21:53:50] <n1> hah
[21:54:07] <janrinok> well, that's the 'starters' taken care of...
[21:54:21] <LaminatorX> The place I had it was a vegetarian restaurant. I can't really think what I'd add to it though. That's the way with the best veg dishes.
[21:55:10] <janrinok> It sounds like you had a very good night out.
[21:55:22] <n1> last time i went vegetarian was when i was accidentally served a vegetarian lasagna... i was far from impressed.
[21:55:39] <janrinok> well, if it was not what you expected, then you would be.
[21:55:59] <janrinok> or should that read 'wouldn't be'.
[21:56:20] <LaminatorX> I did. the friends with the spare ticket also picked up my dinner and drinks, which was totally unexpected. I halfway wondered if they were planning on inviting my back to their place.
[21:57:01] <LaminatorX> They were just generous though, which really was best for all parties concerned.
[21:57:06] <janrinok> It's nice when something like that happens - especially if unexpected.
[21:58:14] <n1> yeah, sounds like a good night out and even more when it ends and you still have some money left
[21:59:09] <n1> i got dinner bought for me last week, and i'm looking to do quite well out of my germany trip... flights and hotel are all being paid for
[21:59:34] <janrinok> Right, I've got to get my SO settled for the night. A pleasure as always gentlemen, and particularly good to have you back on chan LamX!
[21:59:43] <LaminatorX> Arcade Fire was phenominal. They simultaneously set the bar for staging and choreography in a large venue while playing with enough passion that they didn't upstage themselves with theatrics.
[21:59:59] <LaminatorX> Good to be.
[22:00:02] <n1> take care, janrinok
[22:00:13] <janrinok> cheers guys, thx agn
[22:00:29] -!- janrinok has quit [Quit: leaving]
[22:01:08] <n1> i've never really listened to Arcade Fire but it's good to see some people get the balance right, a lot of bands like that totally lose it when playing live
[22:02:02] <n1> i'm really hoping i'll get that same level of professionalism and passion when I see CunninLynguists in Hamburg next month.
[22:13:36] <Woods> Does anyone know who AnonTechie is?
[22:13:55] <n1> no, but i've been wondering myself
[22:14:08] <Woods> They account for like... 40% of our submissions.
[22:14:21] <n1> and kaszz
[22:14:26] <Woods> mmhmm
[22:15:48] <n1> lhsi isn't submitting as much as he was, but i didn't really question that due to the type of stories and sources.
[22:16:04] <Woods> It kinda makes me nervous.
[22:16:05] <n1> anontechie and kaszz seem different
[22:16:13] <Woods> Like... What if AnonTechie disappears.
[22:17:03] <n1> well, if i recall correctly, it's only been the last week or two he's been submitting the amount he has been
[22:17:52] <LaminatorX> He's been at that volume before. He had backed off a bit.
[22:18:11] <n1> i think he must have been doing so much before i started
[22:18:14] <n1> so i didn't realize
[22:18:31] <LaminatorX> Right. Early on, he was around a third of our submissions.
[22:19:03] <n1> yeah, see when i started lhsi accounted for about a third probably.
[22:19:58] <LaminatorX> It'd be great if AT's summaries had more than just quotes more often, but it's good material otherwise and it keeps coming, so I don't want to rock the boat.
[22:20:00] <n1> kaszz has made about 18 submissions in the last 6 days
[22:20:16] <n1> just started out of nowhere
[22:20:41] <n1> yeah, most of the time it's just a copy/paste from an article but they can be quite good stories.
[22:20:47] <LaminatorX> Every time a new regular submitter appears, I shed a tear of joy.
[22:20:55] <Woods> Hehe
[22:21:04] <n1> yeah
[22:21:05] <Woods> I love accepting that first submission from someone.
[22:22:32] <n1> me too, sometimes i'm less happy with the reaction of lack of to the story
[22:24:05] <Woods> Dang it... I think I jacked up the time on a story again...
[22:24:22] <n1> change it quickly
[22:24:28] <Woods> I swear, this army time thing totally ruins my ability to think
[22:24:47] <n1> 24hr clock?
[22:25:03] <Woods> Yeah.
[22:25:13] <Woods> I keep setting things for times that do not exist.
[22:25:21] <Woods> Well, keep, I mean it has happend twice now.
[22:25:31] <LaminatorX> Rather than do 24hr-UTC math in my head, I just open Stories.pl in a seperate tab, and set my time relative to thater's listed there.
[22:25:42] <Woods> It just resets it to like, midnight on January 1st, 1930 I think.
[22:26:18] <Woods> I do that too, I just am not used to thinking in that way, so when it gets to midnight, I forget to restart at 00:00 the next day.
[22:26:19] <n1> i'm usually ok as UTC is either the same as my time zone or -1
[22:26:20] <LaminatorX> "Epoch Fail"
[22:26:24] <Woods> Yeah, lol!
[22:26:49] <n1> but i've nearly fucked up a couple times not changing the date for the start of 'tomorrows' stories
[22:27:54] <Woods> It goes back to 1969... And apparently there are two other AnonTechie stories back there too.
[22:28:12] * n1 hopes they're not mine
[22:30:39] <Woods> Both by LamX
[22:30:51] <LaminatorX> Awesome!
[22:31:26] <Woods> Both at the end of February.
[22:31:29] <Woods> Nailed it.
[22:32:19] <Woods> Should I just leave them, or delete them?
[22:33:15] <LaminatorX> Let me take a look.
[22:33:53] <Woods> http://soylentnews.org
[22:33:58] <Woods> http://soylentnews.org
[22:36:40] <LaminatorX> The SI units one ran under another entry. I think the drone one did too, checking.
[22:50:42] -!- lhsi [lhsi!~yaaic@uvsf-29-830-75-357.as58994.net] has joined #editorial
[22:59:12] <lhsi> If I am submitting a story, is there a way I can mark it as "needs editing"? Essentially for when I'm submitting stories from my phone and can't easily write up a good summary?
[22:59:41] <n1> hey lhsi
[23:00:23] <n1> if we're doing our jobs properly, they should all be looked over properly before, if you want to make doubly sure just put "NEEDS EDITING" at the start of your submission
[23:02:43] <lhsi> OK, thanks. Html is awkward to do on a phone so I usually leave the link at the top to be put in where appropriate
[23:03:09] <n1> thats cool
[23:03:19] <n1> thanks a lot for your submissions!
[23:03:24] <n1> they're all very much appreciated
[23:03:56] <LaminatorX> Keep 'em coming, lhsi.
[23:05:19] <n1> as I've said before, i'd rather a unqiue summary from the submitter than perfect html.
[23:05:35] <n1> unique*
[23:16:16] <LaminatorX> Catch ya later, all. Keep up the good work.
