[15:54:00] <janrinok> hi mrcoolbp
[15:55:51] <mrcoolbp> good morning
[15:56:01] <janrinok> how's things with you?
[15:56:24] <mrcoolbp> i woke up like 3 min ago. ask me acfter coffee
[15:56:30] <mrcoolbp> and you = )
[15:56:56] <janrinok> I'll let you have your coffee then.....
[15:57:27] <mrcoolbp> it's a brewin'
[15:57:47] <janrinok> I'm good, I've only just got here myself - cup of tea in hand..
[15:58:04] <mrcoolbp> Nah I'm good though, looks like we can finally start this name-vote thing going!
[15:58:19] * mrcoolbp is super-excited to get this one off his plate
[15:58:26] <janrinok> Just checking my emails now
[16:04:53] <weeds> janrinok: Just stopped by to bitch... A story about bacon shrinkage makes it and a story about unions (which should get some discussion going) doesn't? - foo
[16:05:18] <mrcoolbp> weeds: your submission?
[16:05:26] <janrinok> weeds - I've haven't seen either story - what day are we talking about
[16:07:04] <janrinok> by the way - Hi weeds!
[16:07:27] <weeds> Hi! (sorry about starting with a bitch)
[16:07:49] <janrinok> np - still haven't got a clue about which stories though...
[16:08:08] <mrcoolbp> janrinok, checking your stories now
[16:08:15] <mrcoolbp> for double-check
[16:08:23] <weeds> Mine was about the Northwestern football players getting the right to unionize. I tried to connect it to university work in general and unions in general.
[16:08:49] <janrinok> did I send you an email saying that I'd binned it?
[16:09:10] <weeds> THe other one was about some research done on how to cook bacon for minimal shrinkage.
[16:09:26] <janrinok> not one of mine...
[16:09:48] <weeds> No, I just saw today that it was rejected - been in for a week or so I think
[16:10:19] <weeds> Like I said, just bitching. I don't know who rejected it
[16:11:32] <janrinok> I send emails to my rejections nowadays - but having found it on your homepage, it's not exactly 'nerdish'; unless you are also a NRLB nerd...
[16:12:15] <janrinok> And I printed your previous story about Lexmark!
[16:12:55] <weeds> I would bet that a lot of members went to school on some sort of scholarship so there is a connection.
[16:13:22] <janrinok> Ah that's is a US thing - we Brits wouldn't even understand that.
[16:13:54] <weeds> janrinok: Lexmark wasn't me...
[16:14:22] <weeds> janrinok: OK, I can see that. it is definitely a US thing.
[16:15:33] <janrinok> Oh sorry misreading that - The Lexmark story is tagged as a similar story to yours! How the hell the computer came to that conclusion I haven't got a clue!
[16:16:18] <janrinok> We'll apart from that, weeds, how's things lol
[16:16:42] <weeds> ha ha! anyhow I didn't stop by to campaign. It's good to have a place to discuss.
[16:17:21] <weeds> Things have been busy. MY daughter is getting better (had mono)
[16:17:23] <janrinok> (and I DID post your Turkey Hijacking Google etc story :p
[16:17:45] <weeds> Yes you did and I'm glad I can participate.
[16:17:58] <weeds> WHen the call went out for stories, I gave it a shot
[16:18:14] <janrinok> sry to hear about your daughter - is she still recovering or back to her previous self?
[16:26:12] <weeds> She went to work yesterday - missed an entire week
[16:26:47] <janrinok> Good to hear - I send her my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
[16:29:46] <weeds> thank you
[16:33:20] <paulej72> I think I figured out the home page not updatin issue
[16:34:26] <paulej72> for some users the authors to show are getting unchecked. a prefs reset fixes it for them, but 263 users have at least one author in the do not list var
[16:36:35] <mrcoolbp> hrm
[16:37:17] <janrinok> let me guess - it's me, isn't it? - they hate me, I know it, I'm going to leave and have another cup of tea.....
[16:37:34] <janrinok> brb
[16:44:26] <mrcoolbp> heh, janrinok! No one hates you.
[16:45:18] <janrinok> ....I bet you're just saying that.....
[16:45:34] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: absolutely not
[16:45:35] <janrinok> tea's good though....
[16:45:43] <janrinok> lol
[16:46:05] <mrcoolbp> even so, random users will flame us eventually, we can't let it bother us
[16:46:21] <mrcoolbp> the Khyber's of the world will always try to get under our skin
[16:46:27] <janrinok> it's ok - I wasn't being serious!
[16:46:46] <janrinok> I thought the cup of tea might have given it away...
[16:47:49] <janrinok> When the join the editorial team and then criticise, then maybe I'll get a bit concerned. But I just try to learn from what they say, then forget it.
[16:48:06] <mrcoolbp> exactly
[16:48:37] * mrcoolbp edits another story
[16:49:02] * janrinok thinks that perhaps it mrcoolbp that they don't like.....
[16:49:15] <mrcoolbp> oh most likely
[16:49:18] <janrinok> lol
[16:49:32] * mrcoolbp needs to mess with his internal lameness filter
[16:50:23] <janrinok> Following on from the 'Dirty Dozen', we proudly present 'The Unloved 7'
[16:51:42] <janrinok> not got quite the same ring to it, but can we get someone famous to play me?
[16:58:28] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: added a bunch of links: http://soylentnews.org
[17:00:01] <janrinok> thx np
[17:00:35] <mrcoolbp> = )
[17:00:51] <mrcoolbp> let me finish up this last red story and I'll get me some breakfast
[17:02:23] <janrinok> ..and more coffee
[17:07:20] <janrinok> So if I post faster than you can check them, does that mean you will go hungry?
[17:07:34] <mrcoolbp> probably
[17:07:34] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: changed some wording http://soylentnews.org
[17:07:57] <mrcoolbp> janrinok: looks like I have a little lead time on that one though
[17:08:01] <mrcoolbp> = )
[17:08:02] <mrcoolbp> BRB
[17:08:26] <janrinok> OK I'll be gone for a while but back in an hour or 2 - have a good breakfast

[20:30:49] <n1_> hey janrinok
[20:44:10] MrBluze is now known as MrBluze|afk
[20:53:08] <janrinok> n1 hi
[20:54:06] <n1_> how are things?
[20:54:13] <janrinok> not bad, and you?
[20:55:20] <n1_> stressed but just about coming round again
[20:55:29] <janrinok> too much work?
[20:56:40] <n1_> not enough really, been doing a lot of work over the last month on upcoming projects which have nearly all fallen through... but one does now seem to be back on, naturally with revised requirements. and it's also the least profitable.
[20:57:02] <janrinok> sry to hear that, hope things pick up for you.
[20:57:49] <n1_> lots of time and resources spent, little money earned overall. ive been looking at other opportunities but i keep coming up against a wall and lacking funding to really pull anything off properly.
[20:58:01] <n1_> things could be worse, but not where i expected to be right now.
[20:58:23] <janrinok> anything I can do to cheer you up?
[20:59:11] <n1_> it's all good really, just frustrating
[20:59:52] <n1_> it always seems to be in cycles, things are a struggle for a while and then everything happens and i don't have enough time to take on all the work.
[20:59:57] <janrinok> I see you've already posted a few stories today
[21:00:51] <n1_> trying to keep up with the pace heh, i'm intending to do some later tonight
[21:01:22] <janrinok> Well, if you've got too much on, just say. We can manage for a day or two.
[21:02:21] <janrinok> akthough your problem sounds the opposite
[21:02:53] <n1_> there's always stuff i should be doing, doing some editing is a bit of a break from that really
[21:03:14] <janrinok> I know exactly what you mean!
[21:03:19] <n1_> but when im spending all day reading and writing stuff, editing just makes me go blah.
[21:03:24] <n1_> and when im on the road i just dont have time
[21:04:17] <n1_> as you cant use a phone when driving, i dont think editing stories would be acceptable
[21:04:28] <janrinok> lol, prob not
[21:05:15] <janrinok> brb 5
[21:05:18] <n1_> ok
[21:12:45] <janrinok> back now
[21:16:17] <n1_> wb
[21:16:30] <janrinok> thx
[21:17:49] <n1_> on the work front, i'm debt averse, which from what i see is very unusual for business.
[21:19:15] <janrinok> well it seems safer that way. Are you a sole trader, ltd company or what?
[21:19:24] <n1_> ltd company
[21:19:38] <janrinok> even safer - well, relatively so
[21:20:05] <n1_> the only access to credit i have is actually through the company, i don't have a personal credit card but we're literally unable to operate with some credit
[21:20:15] <n1_> without*
[21:20:29] mrcoolbp is now known as mrcoolbp|afk
[21:21:32] <janrinok> That's perfectly normal, if people paid bills as soon as you presented them, but you could buy your materials sale or return then perhaps credit wouldn't be necessary - but neither of those is going to happen!
[21:21:40] <n1_> the costs are one thing, but a ltd company is the best way forward, hopefully there will be two in the coming months, due to another venture in a different industry.
[21:22:08] <n1_> it's a weird one with the credit
[21:22:49] <n1_> the 'industry' operates on credit, but i always prefer to pay the suppliers up front
[21:23:21] <janrinok> well you always know where you stand that way - and exactly how much you have to play with.
[21:23:24] <n1_> customer deposists cover the majority and any extra goes on the card
[21:24:14] <n1_> its great fun, one of the main distributors, i order from online
[21:24:23] <n1_> and it always gets rejected because we dont have a credit account
[21:24:38] <n1_> so, call up to pay... but its the only way for them to not fuck up the order
[21:24:45] <janrinok> lol
[21:24:48] <n1_> and the prices are A LOT cheaper online
[21:25:27] <n1_> but it usually takes an online order and then 3 phonecalls
[21:25:31] <janrinok> is that just because they can save on having a shop or whatever?
[21:25:53] <n1_> and then a month later, when you have forgotten about it... they send you a pack in the post will all the paperwork
[21:26:01] <n1_> with*
[21:26:16] <n1_> they have trade counters
[21:26:23] <n1_> but if there's what you need in stock there, psh
[21:27:00] <n1_> and it usually takes half an hour, even if the counter has no one else waiting
[21:27:07] <n1_> because they're operating like it's 1985 still
[21:27:54] <janrinok> I'm going to edit one more, and then call it a day - its been a long one for my wife and I. She needed a bit more support than usual so I'll try to get an early night.
[21:28:08] <janrinok> Surely companies like that will go out of business?
[21:28:28] <n1_> I hope you have a good evening, janrinok :)
[21:28:41] <janrinok> not gone yet....
[21:29:02] <n1_> they're the biggest in the industry, they deal with the other sides of biggest in the industry
[21:29:05] <n1_> monopolies
[21:29:53] <n1_> i try to get things from elsewhere, but it comes down to cost, and for the time it takes, it's usually worth the savings
[21:30:07] <janrinok> makes you wonder how they stay in business if they are inefficient. Although they have the benefits of scale to keep prices rock bottom for themselves.
[21:31:07] <n1_> it's scale all around, me spending a few hundred to thousands on each transaction is shit, i'm a rounding error
[21:31:18] <n1_> they run on the multinationals buying hundreds of thousands worth a month
[21:31:38] <n1_> for them, it's easy through the credit accounts and vast quantities of stock
[21:32:34] <n1_> and a lot of it is 'internal' stuff, all these companies interlink through the parent company.
[21:32:51] <janrinok> yeah, I can understand that.
[21:35:39] <n1_> these last 3 years have shown me a lot about 'business'
[21:36:26] <janrinok> Are things better now than 3 years ago, worse, or just different?
[21:36:29] <n1_> from a different perspective of me just trying to get work and compete in the market, which i'd already been doing
[21:36:43] <n1_> things are better
[21:37:52] <n1_> im confident in my business and what we're doing, but it's a long road to actually being a 'success'
[21:38:08] <n1_> unless that success is only defined by the numbers and not sustainability and ethics
[21:39:03] <janrinok> Do you employ anyone else or are you a one-man-band?
[21:39:45] <n1_> i have a business partner that does the maths/tax, government regulation and answers the phone
[21:39:59] <n1_> and a couple people i use as subcontractors when the work requires
[21:40:09] <janrinok> I'd prefer your job....:)
[21:40:31] <n1_> i couldn't do it without him doing that side of it, it's just too much
[21:41:13] <janrinok> Yes, I can see that, but it's not a job that appeals to me.....
[21:41:52] <n1_> me either, he employs a couple of people to do it for our business and he has other clients
[21:42:03] <n1_> but he has to do most of the hard work himself and for several businesses
[21:42:26] <n1_> he's offered me to do it as well, but i'd rather labour on a building site.
[21:43:38] <janrinok> Well, that's me done for today - and it's not even 10 o'clock. If the wife sleeps well I could get a good nights sleep tonight. Sorry to cut the conversation short, but such opportunities are rare. cu tomorrow?
[21:44:11] <n1_> I should be around, i'll be posting some stories for overnight i hope.
[21:44:22] <n1_> have a good evening, janrinok and take care :)
[21:44:43] <janrinok> and you, cheers.
