[15:46:46] <janrinok> hi
[15:50:20] <n1> hey janrinok
[15:50:52] <janrinok> n1 I thought that you might be around
[15:51:07] <janrinok> hows it going?
[15:51:53] <n1> been better, work is pissing me off royally
[15:51:55] <n1> how are you
[15:52:22] <janrinok> you seem to spend a lot of time at work nowadays. Sorry to hear that it is not good
[15:53:05] <n1> part of the joys of being self-employed/running a business
[15:53:08] <n1> it just never fucking ends lol
[15:54:26] <n1> currently im being fucked over my my own attempts at customer satisfaction, trying to update software for free, remotely and the hardware doesnt want it to happen... so i'm going to have to actually go to site now to hope it works there
[15:54:41] <janrinok> I remember that feeling well. Although I took early retirement to look after my wife, every day now is the same as any other. Groundhog day forever. We have a routine and we have to stick to it.
[15:55:13] <janrinok> Will that involve travelling very far?
[15:55:28] <n1> yeah, it cuts both ways... the stress and pressure is hard to handle sometimes, but things being the way they are mean i cant get 'bored'
[15:55:47] <n1> new shit comes up every day, i have a plan for a week, and then the phone goes, and that plan is out the window
[15:55:53] <janrinok> lol
[15:56:15] <janrinok> and they promised you excitement, travel, interesting challenges etc...
[15:56:36] <n1> don't have to travel too far, and it's not a bad thing in some ways, i need to hassle the client about more work that was supposed to be happening
[15:56:42] <n1> but people dont like spending money if they can avoid it
[15:57:03] <janrinok> you could have stopped half way through that statement....
[15:57:23] <n1> best option for me now, i got screwed over so badly as a contractor
[15:58:10] <n1> it's business2business stuff, but i got the client based on working at his home, he doesnt mind spending money on his own shit, but the business he tries to save
[15:58:55] <janrinok> typical, save a few pennies to spend a few pounds!
[15:59:46] <n1> i do security installations, and it's a thing that no one wants to spend money on
[16:00:19] <janrinok> ...but it could save them much more.
[16:00:40] <n1> most are head in the sand, in residential situation
[16:00:49] <n1> by looking at getting a security system, they're tempting fate
[16:01:17] <n1> and i wont install shit, so my quotes are more often than not on the high end, if they're shopping around
[16:01:38] <janrinok> most admirable
[16:02:05] <n1> run it in a different way to the competition, which has won and lost work
[16:02:41] <n1> im desperate to get into more commercial stuff though, residential is the bottom of the barrel, low margins, fighting for every job
[16:02:54] <janrinok> as long as what you have works for you enough of the time, I would suggest that you stick with it.
[16:03:13] <janrinok> but I can see why you would want to go into the commercial market more.
[16:03:17] <n1> i'm not a slick salesman, so i think some people are put off by my "tell it how it is approach"
[16:03:23] <janrinok> lolol
[16:03:42] <janrinok> ah, the truth - you can't handle the truth.... or so the quote goes.
[16:03:52] <n1> when i first started doing this work, i was doing a lot of residential
[16:04:01] <n1> but hassled my boss enough and got moved over to commercial
[16:04:17] <n1> so much better, not invading peoples homes, the work is more varied and the jobs are bigger
[16:04:39] <janrinok> and you now spend time monitoring the systems remotely?
[16:04:49] <n1> some i can, some i cant
[16:05:08] <n1> trying to get more that way
[16:05:40] <n1> can get alarm system where i can do everything remotely, but it's 60-70% more than a standard system
[16:06:01] <n1> all cctv stuff is pretty easy to deal with remotely now though, if people leave their fucking routers alone
[16:06:27] <janrinok> lol - the pokey fingers and the flashing lights...
[16:07:10] <janrinok> and the belief that 'any monkey can do this shit' - until it all goes wrong for them. Then they deny that they touched anything.
[16:07:21] <n1> people get a new ISP and router and are then all pissed that they cant access their cctv
[16:07:50] <janrinok> but I thought that they were paying you to watch it for them!
[16:08:08] <n1> i even went to one and the cable for the NVR was not even plugged back into it...
[16:08:17] <janrinok> lolol
[16:08:20] <n1> so even if the router had been set up, how was it supposed to see it?
[16:08:45] <n1> most of the cctv im putting in now doesnt even have a local display, all done via laptop or ipad
[16:08:50] <janrinok> how did they explain that one?
[16:09:13] <n1> i didnt even ask, i just plugged it in and configured the router
[16:09:19] <n1> and complained that their new router wasnt much better than the old one
[16:10:03] <n1> sky broadband routers are a pain in the ass
[16:10:38] <janrinok> my dad had one of those - it seemed ok for domestic use but he was hardly a heavy user.
[16:11:13] <n1> the newer ones are better, but configuring firewall rules, ip reservation and port forwards were a pain in the ass
[16:11:34] <n1> it kept losing the configuration, needed to make the changes and reset the router like 3 times to make sure it kept it
[16:11:51] <n1> otherwise, the firewall rule would be overridden by the default "block all"
[16:12:31] <n1> apparently, the routers Tesco supplies for their ADSL has a limit on wifi devices you can use
[16:12:40] <janrinok> safe, but not terribly useful.
[16:13:14] <janrinok> Tesco ADSL - I never thought that I hear those two words in the same sentence.
[16:13:21] <n1> yeah, i wish i never did lol
[16:13:44] <n1> this was from a client who i intentionally priced myself out of it, because i knew it would be a pain
[16:14:21] <n1> he wanted it all internet connected and blah blah... but didnt think it would cause an issue that he turns his router off at night
[16:14:24] <n1> and every time they leave the house
[16:14:34] <janrinok> lol
[16:15:22] <n1> from what he told me, they essentially turn everything off at night and every time they go out
[16:15:23] <janrinok> makes me wonder how some people get through life at all...
[16:15:48] <n1> his son was useless and made him turn the router off, otherwise he'd be using the internet when he's not allowed
[16:16:04] <n1> and his wife is too busy to remember anything so they couldnt have anything that required learning how to use
[16:16:30] <janrinok> perhaps 'Darwin' will kick in soon...
[16:16:45] <n1> people spend too much time trying not to enjoy life
[16:17:13] <janrinok> Whereas we can't get enough time to enjoy it!
[16:17:44] <n1> life is supposed to be a hardship apparently, especially when listening to people of a certain generation
[16:18:11] <janrinok> you will be that old one day..... I think I'm getting more like my dad as the years roll by
[16:18:49] <n1> i am very good friends with my dad, we're very similar in more ways than i like to admit
[16:19:05] <n1> but he's an example of why i say 'fuck it' too often
[16:19:10] <janrinok> lol
[16:19:17] <n1> because i know his life, i know the futility of it
[16:19:37] <n1> he worked longer than ive been alive for a dream, and it turned into his own personal hell
[16:19:50] <n1> after spending 30 years working every hour he had
[16:20:00] <janrinok> I've stopped worrying about most things - and I'm still here. But I'm sorry for your Dad.
[16:20:34] <n1> he's 'ok' now, has worked a way around some of it
[16:20:46] <n1> but after working all those years for his retirement dream
[16:20:53] <n1> to find out the dream and the reality are a long way apart
[16:21:54] <n1> he now spends all summer in a small caravan touring the music festivals of the UK, volunteering
[16:22:11] <n1> thats what he lives for now
[16:22:31] <n1> to come back here to spend 4 months or so living in a caravan thats smaller than his bathroom at 'home'
[16:23:09] <janrinok> My wife and I had our own dreams - which all fell apart in 2003. Our world is much smaller than we expected it to be, and the money that we saved has had to be spent on modifying the house so that we can manage.
[16:24:47] <n1> illness and disability can really fuck things up. you can still at least make the best of the situation and the planning hasn't totally gone to waste
[16:25:13] <janrinok> yep - lets change the subject.
[16:26:23] <n1> something odd going on with the stories on the site?
[16:26:37] <n1> not seeing posts coming up and the comments have dropped off
[16:27:11] <n1> saw something in the main channel about someone posted a comment but it seemed to disappear into the abyss
[16:27:18] <janrinok> We have a server problem. NCommander did some work on it yesterday and the server needs restarting. But the people on duty have lost their access to the server!
[16:27:37] <n1> ah
[16:27:39] <n1> less than ideal
[16:28:23] <janrinok> If you log on you can see everything, but if you are AC your world stopped early this morning. Its a fault that we had for a while, we have a procedural solution, but can't execute it because of the permissions cock-up
[16:28:40] <n1> i want my questions answered about that US Gov/Toyota deal!
[16:29:17] <n1> on the main page it seems to forget if i'm logged in or not, usually on first visit i'm not, refresh and i am still
[16:30:17] <janrinok> lol - the answer to the questions regarding toyota haven't appeared yet - but there are plenty of comments for a weekend.
[16:30:57] <n1> the 4 most recent stories have 0 comments
[16:31:15] <n1> at least 0 that i can see
[16:33:16] <janrinok> The toyota actually has 20+
[16:33:51] <n1> on the main page i get 0
[16:33:55] <n1> if i open the story
[16:33:56] <n1> i get 13
[16:34:57] <janrinok> OK I exagerated a little - it was a guestimate...
[16:35:31] <n1> lol
[16:35:57] <janrinok> a weekend 13 is a weekday 20+ anytime!
[16:36:25] <n1> im guessing there would be more, but if many people are hitting the main page, reading summary and seeing no comments listed, they like me, may not actually open the story to see there are
[16:37:11] <janrinok> True - and we are slowly losing readership. Not a killer at the moment, but definately not a trend that I want to see continue.
[16:38:14] <janrinok> Its a combination of insufficient 'good' stories, technical hiccups, and a bit of a throw back perhaps to the great parting of the ways 3 weeks back.
[16:39:52] <n1> people are fickle sometimes, they might come back... it seems silly to go through the years of shit with the old site, and to give up on this one a few week sin
[16:39:56] <n1> weeks in*
[16:41:07] <n1> i see it more in the long term, i think it's going to be slow and painful, but the end result is going to be worth it
[16:41:17] <janrinok> Oh I think that they will come back but we need to provide a stable and quality service for a few months, without too many dramas, and just keep chipping away in the background with the technical changes. Once we have reached stability, then we can look at other bigger tasks.
[16:41:33] <n1> exactly my view also
[16:42:03] <janrinok> But at this rate - I'm not sure that we have enough people to keep it going for a few months. We need to expand as we discussed yesterday.
[16:42:25] <janrinok> I'm going to have to go soon to start preparing our next meal.
[16:43:21] <n1> its hard with the slow processes in a world where things are supposed to be instant, especially online where people have no tolerance for 'coming soon' anymore
[16:44:50] <janrinok> I've got to go - cu in an hour or two.
[16:44:54] <n1> take care
[16:44:59] <janrinok> thx u2
