[00:25:52] <Runaway1956> I thought everyone knew that Master Lock doesn't make any "good locks"
[00:26:13] <Runaway1956> Their best are terribly expensive, and still pretty crappy.
[00:26:55] <Runaway1956> You can get an Arbus knockoff with good pin sets installed for less than Master Lock's best.
[00:27:38] <Runaway1956> For that matter, you can get a genuine Arbus with a good pin for less than an overpriced Master Lock.

[07:50:56] <Ingar> after watching the lockpicking lawyer I've come to the conclusion there are no decent locks
[08:57:41] <chromas> The great thing about modern tech is not only do cameras have firmware updates, but even the lenses!
[09:22:52] <Ingar> don't tell me about modern tech
[09:23:17] <Ingar> noticed an issue with my telescope mount yesterday
[09:23:28] <Ingar> sounded like gears grinding/skipping/
[09:23:49] <Ingar> that's going to be fun
[09:24:19] <Ingar> (and I'm already running the latest firmware ;) )
[09:24:45] <chromas> Have you checked for gearbox firmware?
[09:29:49] <Ingar> last year, and there haven't been any updates
[09:30:20] <Ingar> interesting though that the website mentions release data as december 12 but I downlaoded it november 18
[09:30:23] <Ingar> versions match though
[09:31:37] <chromas> Time to take it all apart, then put it back together with screws to spare
[09:33:59] <Ingar> there goes Ascension Day
[09:35:25] <Ingar> chromas: http://ingar.intranifty.net didn't have any parts left
[09:36:33] <chromas> try again
[09:37:43] <chromas> pretty slow loadin'. maybe we all clicked at the same time

[10:05:01] <Ingar> weird, host is usually plenty fast
[10:14:52] <fab23> Ingar: could be that they did a minor update in the firmware but not change the version number.
[10:31:05] <Ingar> in any casem I'm quite sure the issue is not firmware related :)
[10:32:03] <Ingar> high precision gearbox, made in china
[10:32:25] <Ingar> and we all know chin'as legendary quality control
[10:33:05] <chromas> [escalator panels vibrating]
[10:37:25] <Ingar> fab23: also, I checked the current download's md5sum against the one I have installed and it seems to match
[10:37:50] <fab23> Ingar: ok, then all is fine :)

[14:56:16] <Runaway1956> Ingar, there are few good padlocks on the market, true. BUT - you can pay a locksmith to put a good set of pins in most better locks.
[14:57:17] <Runaway1956> I mentioned the Abus locks earlier, I rather like them. Mine have 6 or 7 pins in them, with - - - uhhhh - can't think of the term for them at the moment
[14:57:46] <Runaway1956> But average dumbasses aren't picking them, and they are generally rather hard to break.
[14:58:42] <Runaway1956> Long story short, if you're willing to spend $30 to $50 bucks, you'll stop most thieves, even low caliber professionals.
[14:59:29] <Runaway1956> Proper installation is key though - make sure the thief can't get a prybar or a bolt cutter on the lock.
[15:00:04] <Runaway1956> You're still screwed if he brings a blow torch with him.
[15:03:55] <fab23> In Switzerland almost everywhere the locks from Kaba are in place: https://www.dormakaba.com

[15:07:28] <systemd> ^ 03How Security Pins Work
[15:08:03] <Runaway1956> That vidya shows the difference between the kinds of pins in a lock, and shows how some are more difficult than others.
[15:08:46] <Runaway1956> I have picked my six pin lock, twice, have never picked my seven pin locks, the pins defeat me every time I try.
[15:09:12] <Runaway1956> I think I'm a better lock pick than Joe Average Dumbass, but I'm far from expert.
[15:10:21] <Runaway1956> And, there are more pins available - I don't think I'd ever pick a lock with 9 or more pins, provided they are some kind of security pins, most especially when the pins are mixed.
[15:11:53] <Runaway1956> I've heard of those dormakaba in discussion, never seen one though.
[15:14:44] <fab23> Runaway1956: I did not find their "just" locks on the US site, there they seem to sell only the fancy stuff with electronic :)
[15:15:01] <fab23> s/"just"/simple mechanical/
[15:16:36] <fab23> Runaway1956: as far as I have seen, this mechanical kaba locks seem only to be in use in Switzerland, don't see them in the countries around.
[15:42:31] <Runaway1956> I remember someone telling me something like that about a European lock - probably your kaba locks.
[15:50:32] <fab23> Kaba locks seems quiet uniq, but so regular for me.
[16:54:31] <Ingar> tbh honest I hardly use any locks
[16:54:36] <Ingar> I use baseball bats
[16:55:11] <Ingar> and I've put up a sign "Warning: dangerous man with baseball bat"

[19:03:40] <drussell> For most padlock applications, doing things like security pins is basically useless and akin to security theatre. People aren't going to attack your lock by picking in most padlock-type applications.
[19:03:42] <drussell> Now that cordless angle grinders are a thing it is way more likely that someone just cuts through your lock or the hasp, or whatever hinges, etc are. involved, even if you have a thick shroud around the actual lock.
[19:04:06] <drussell> Pick resistance is much more important on higher-security door locks, etc.
[19:04:26] <drussell> Especially where people might want to come in in a covert manner, without obvious signs of entry.
[19:04:51] <drussell> Most padlock applications aren't the kind of thing that someone wants to breach unnoticed.
[19:05:01] <drussell> They're usually just going to use the brute force method.
[19:06:04] <drussell> P.S. Abus (not arbus or whatever the runaway said,) makes some good locks. "Master Lock" generally does not. Agreed.
[19:09:06] <drussell> I use ABUS monoblocks under a thick steel shrouded box on my sea cans that I have at the storage yards.
