[06:04:01] <chromas> well even with multi-threading, it would still have to respect the delay or face floodbooting
[06:04:10] <chromas> face the floodboot
[06:07:09] <juggs> true. although I've no idea how flooding is controlled on the ircd - serving 1 line each / sec to 100 users is not the same as 100 lines / sec to just one user
[06:08:25] <juggs> who knows, I'm not going to change and recompile eggdrop just to get a bit of speedup in a rarely used recall function

[06:23:16] <juggs> you may want to consider getting a cloak for you and your bot too :D

[06:31:51] <juggs> ~exec@709-27-2-01.cust.aussiebb.net doesn't look entirely obfuscated :D
[06:32:31] <juggs> depends on paranoia level I guess :D

[07:30:02] <crutchy> sorry about the double-post. the timer was set on 45 sec which wasn't long enough; the script restarted before the previous one finished :-/
[07:30:20] <crutchy> changed to 5 mins
[07:31:49] <juggs> yeh, you need to be careful with your timings, some sites will block you if you hit the RSS/Atom feed too frequently. For most sites 30 mins is fine.
[07:32:14] <crutchy> mkay yeah might change it to that
[07:33:42] <juggs> I'm sure google has the capacity to not even blink if you hit them 100 times a second, smaller feeds probably don't take the same view :D
[07:33:52] <crutchy> haha yeah
[07:34:06] <crutchy> i set to 20 mins. i'll see how it goes
[07:34:17] <crutchy> just gotta wait now :-P
[07:34:28] * crutchy added comp.arch
[07:34:53] <crutchy> does eggdrop do atom as well?
[07:35:00] <Regurgitator> [Latest Science News -- ScienceDaily] Gene critical for development of brain motor center found - http://feeds.sciencedaily.com
[07:42:16] <juggs> eggdrop is a generic IRC bot with a load of channel control stuff thrown in (that can be switched off). It is extensible with TCL scripting. Regurgitator is eggdrop plus rss-synd https://github.com plugged in. Eggdrop takes care of all the IRC stuff leaving you free to just concentrate on scripting extensions. I think there is a windows vers of eggdrop called windrop that needs cygwin or something - never messed wth that so take it a
[07:42:16] <juggs> s you find it
[07:43:06] <juggs> an yes rss-synd automagically understands the various rss versions and atom
[07:43:31] <juggs> and yes it deals with utf-8 feeds
[07:43:45] <crutchy> hmm. exec is very basic and doesn't know different rss versions, so might fall over for some
[07:44:04] <crutchy> regurgitator might be the way to go for atom too
[07:48:07] <juggs> The RSS version and Atom vs. RSS is generally in the headers of the feed which you can be parsed out as you wish - it's just XML after all. I just took the lazy approach. I know eggdrop, someone else already put together rss-synd - I've no interest in it scripting from scratch when it's already done. It would be a good exercise though if I were keen to learn something new.
[07:49:47] <crutchy> i pretty much roll my own just to see if i can. i'm sure there are plenty of bots out there (eggdrop included) that would put exec to shame
[07:52:14] <juggs> that's how we learn. If you're enjoying it, keep on rolling your own, you'll be learning far more than you realise.
[07:53:49] <exec> [GoogleGroups: sci.electronics.design] - Amazon Taking Pre-Orders on Fire Phone - https://groups.google.com!topic/sci.electronics.design/i6VYT56P9tg
[07:56:20] <juggs> eggdrop uses TCL script plugins which is not a great transferable scripting language.
[07:57:13] <juggs> You may want to consider pIRCbot - that's a great Java based IRC framework to work in and will scrub up your Java in no time.
[07:58:31] <juggs> If you go to pIRCbot and Java, grab the Eclipse IDE, it;s atep on the path :D
[08:01:09] <crutchy> i've had a squiz at eclipse. a bit big and complicated for my liking (i prefer plain old gedit with no plugins)
[08:01:20] <crutchy> but might have a look at pircbot
[08:04:55] <juggs> It's a mental exercise to get your head around Java and the way it uses classes and OO stuff etc. It's fun if you are coding for fun. As for Eclipse - take it or leave it, you'll certainly learn more using gedit or nano and handcrafting things even if it take a whole while longer.
[08:05:56] <crutchy> i'm used to delphi's oo model but i kinda avoid oo as much as i can for web stuff (for some reason)
[08:06:01] <Regurgitator> [SoylentNews] Incubation Time was Important for Sauropod Dinosaurs - http://soylentnews.org
[08:12:41] <juggs> oo doesn't fit every hole. sometimes a simple functional script is more efficient. know your tools and use them for the correct purpose and for the right reasons.
