[07:44:40] <janrinok> chromas - is he trying to identify with Nickserve and being rejected or is he not even trying?
[07:45:47] <chromas> Not trying, looks like. I don't see any messages from nickserv (or any of the servicees) in the last four or so hours
[07:46:28] <janrinok> k, thx
[07:46:58] <chromas> or five hours
[07:53:56] <janrinok> I've sent him a second email explaining what he has to do
[07:54:18] <janrinok> I do not know which client he is using - he has a Mac.
[08:06:50] <janrinok> hubie, /msg NickServ REGISTER password - type this replacing 'password' with your own password and press enter. Don't worry - nobody else can see what you type.
[08:33:31] <chromas> he's identified in the past, so he's got an account
[08:38:24] <janrinok> OK
[08:40:20] <chromas> Maybe his mac keeps waking up and going back to sleep
[08:40:44] <chromas> although that sounds more like something windows would do

[14:24:31] <janrinok> here
[14:24:48] <hubie> here
[14:25:05] <hubie> I do have autojoin set to the soylent and editorial channels'
[14:26:06] <janrinok> ok - usually there is something to attract your attention when there is activity on a specific channel or channels. You really want to have that selected to as much attention-getting as you can. When you are editing it is easy to get tunnel vision and not see when somebody is trying to contact you
[14:27:43] <janrinok> I'm just searching on my second screen for the documentation for your client
[14:28:20] <janrinok> how's things today?
[14:29:29] <hubie> Thank you for the recent emails. I did start to obsess a bit on chasing the queues. Things are going well. Just relaxing having a late morning coffee and watching some Premier 15s rugby.
[14:30:22] <janrinok> I seem to have picked up a sore throat and a cold - so I am not at my best but it is a weekend and the queues are full so I am taking it easy too
[14:31:53] <janrinok> You are far more valuable as an editor to the site as you are a submitter. That doesn't mean you cannot submit, but try to put most of whatever effort you wish to give us into your editorial role.
[14:32:08] <hubie> I really liked the idea of using the holding queue for setting aside interesting stories to pull out when needed. I think I might use that. There are a few I come across that aren't particularly time sensitive and (I think) not really picked up anywhere else.
[14:32:31] <hubie> I also noticed some month-old stories in there, all bot submitted.
[14:32:36] <janrinok> All my submissions are found by software so I only have to copy the url and upstart them - no effort at all really,
[14:33:32] <janrinok> I like stories that are quirky and different too - they can attract a good response but the community are hard to judge, weekends especially.
[14:34:23] <janrinok> your client comes with a good set of documentation - I might even give it a go sometime.
[14:34:32] <hubie> Is there an automatic filter where if it sees something like "COVID" in the headline, that it gets moved to holding?
[14:35:24] <janrinok> unfortunately not. However, it is only an html page so one could write a script to do just what you are suggesting.
[14:36:01] <hubie> I was just wondering how those older stories got into there
[14:37:09] <janrinok> For example, takyon's tools are just javascript but very useful. Makes it a breeze to create links, paragraphs, blockquotes, lists etc I can process twice as fast or more using them than without.
[14:37:39] <janrinok> The old stories are just stories that somebody put there and then forgot about - the curse of the holding queue!
[14:39:09] <hubie> I think I will want to look into those takyon tools. I have a lot of template stuff I type manually "Journal Reference:", etc. that it would be nice to have a better way to do that. You run those on Firefox?
[14:40:18] <janrinok> now that you are on IRC I can make that easier. =cite https://url or https://url and it will try to find and format the other bits :)
[14:41:42] <janrinok> =cite https://www.sciencedaily.com
[14:41:43] <systemd> <p><b>Journal Reference</b>:<br/><b>Antibiotics can lead to fungal infection because of disruption to the gut's immune system</b>, <cite></cite> (DOI: <a href="https://doi.org/https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/05/220513113225.htm">https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/05/220513113225.htm</a>)</p>
[14:41:49] <janrinok> see? easy
[14:41:58] <janrinok> just cut and paste into the story
[14:42:34] <janrinok> chromas has a whole bunch of useful bot tricks up his sleeves
[14:42:46] <hubie> So you do all that on the #editorial page?
[14:43:17] <janrinok> any channel with systemd@pid1 as a user
[14:44:12] <janrinok> you already know =submit for invoking upstart.
[14:44:18] <janrinok> =submit https://www.sciencedaily.com
[14:44:22] <systemd> ✓ Sub-ccess! "03Antibiotics Can Lead to Fungal Infection Because of Disruption to the Gut's Immune System" (9p) -> https://soylentnews.org
[14:44:27] <janrinok> done!
[14:45:09] <janrinok> we try to make it easy for the community to submit stories. I don't think that we can make it much easier
[14:45:43] <janrinok> =help
[14:45:43] <systemd> acontribute, asub, asubmit, cite, contribute, doi, rehashctl, sedctl, sub, submit
[14:46:06] <janrinok> !help
[14:46:06] <Bender> documentation for jsonbot can be found at http://jsonbot.org
[14:46:10] <Bender> see !list for loaded plugins and "!help plugin" for help on the plugin.
[14:46:30] <hubie> Hopefully weechat is logging this screen for me. :)
[14:47:40] <janrinok> well I hope so too. We cannot do it today, but it is possible to remain 'logged in' even when you computer is switched off. Then when you next sign on you can read what has happened while you have been away. It is invaluable to us for passing messages.
[14:48:32] <janrinok> We will need to set up a ZNC bouncer account for you which will do all of this - it is just a matter of finding the people who know how to do it!
[14:49:16] <hubie> Ah, I've come across ZNC in my pokings around. I'm hoping to be brought up into 2000's level of technology soon!
[14:50:17] <janrinok> For example, in my list of users (which on my screen is on the right hand side) I can see that both Bytram, takyon, cmn32480, Deucalion and others have ZNC accounts but are not actually online.
[14:51:23] <hubie> I haven't quite figured out the nick column yet and what the "@" and "+" mean on some. And Deucalion doesn't look any different in this view for me.
[14:51:29] <janrinok> people mock IRC - and partly for good reasons - but it does a lot more than people know or expect.
[14:52:27] <janrinok> they indicate channel operators and system operators. They can ban accounts, control who has access to which channels etc
[14:54:09] <janrinok> we will also get you a 'mask' so that your IP on here will look like mine and prevent you compromising information.
[14:54:26] <hubie> I joke with my younger colleagues "there's no school like the old school," but it is always a half joke for me because I'm not a big fan of change for change's sake (and I love CLI over GUI).
[14:54:48] <janrinok> the expert on here today - and most days - is chromas, but Deucalian is the head honcho
[14:56:57] <janrinok> the community used to think that TMB was running the show - I don't know why they thought that was the case. He was certainly on here all the time and had the most access to all of our systems, but he wasn't the top dog by any means
[14:57:22] <janrinok> phone! please wait
[14:59:08] <hubie> There's a lot of thoughts going on in the community, particularly among a few AC posters. :)
[15:14:42] <janrinok> sorry about that....
[15:28:55] <janrinok> afk
[15:29:32] <hubie> no problem
[15:57:34] <hubie> I'm going to step away for a while as well, but I think I will disconnect until I'm confident weechat won't start spamming again like it did last night. :)
[15:58:45] <janrinok> np - we thought that we were trying to help by contacting you!
[16:00:36] <hubie> :)
