[13:24:19] <Bytram> welp. Had another system "freeze" after I suspended Huey ( E6410-001 ) last night. All keyboard and mouse input was ignored (including caps-lock and num-lock)
[13:24:53] <Bytram> Good thing I bought a couple spare systems!
[13:25:45] <Bytram> Looks like I'll need to boot one of them, run memtest, and if the memory passes then I'll try swapping it between systems.
[13:31:00] <AzumaHazuki> ooh, what do the spares look like specs-wise? more gen-one Core i-something?
[13:38:18] <Bytram> pretty much identical
[13:38:30] <Bytram> (afaik)
[13:39:15] * Bytram is still getting up-to-speed on all this systemd stuff and linux, in general.
[13:40:23] <Bytram> Only two memory slots in each system, each of which has a 2 GB stick of memory.
[13:40:43] <AzumaHazuki> why such old hardware? things 2-3 generations newer can be had for not much more
[13:40:56] <AzumaHazuki> Nehalem to Sandy Bridge, let alone Nehalem to Haswell, is a huge difference
[13:41:18] <Bytram> They are all Dell Latitudes, so designed to be easily serviced.
[13:42:52] <Bytram> because I happened to stop in at a local Goodwill and they has a stack of notebooks for sale at $25 each. Were better systems that what I was running at the time (an earlier model of Dell Latitude), so it seemed worth taking a chance.
[13:43:09] <AzumaHazuki> e6410?
[13:43:47] <Bytram> Also, I am not in a huge metropolis, and I do not buy stuff online, either.
[13:43:48] <Bytram> yes
[13:44:05] <AzumaHazuki> those were good machines
[13:44:09] <Bytram> =)
[13:44:25] <Bytram> prior system was an E6400
[13:45:12] <AzumaHazuki> for whatever this is worth i've had good experience buying used thinkpads and latitudes on ebay
[13:45:18] <Bytram> and, before that, an HP Athlon 64 1 GHz (with speed step up to 2 G Hz)
[13:45:24] <AzumaHazuki> you have to be really careful but the results are worth it
[13:46:04] * Bytram does not EBay, or Amazon, or pretty much anything on-line.
[13:47:06] <Bytram> Way to many years of software test -- I've seen how they :make the sausage" -- and it ain't pretty.
[13:47:15] <Bytram> s/to/too/
[13:47:15] <SedBot> <Bytram> Way too many years of software test -- I've seen how they :make the sausage" -- and it ain't pretty.
[13:48:08] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: I appreciate the affirmation on the E6410, too.
[13:48:40] <AzumaHazuki> well, key word, "were" good machines. nothing of the sort, not even a mid-period Latitude, is made for a 12+ year term of service
[13:50:26] * Bytram is holding out on buying a new system until he can get a Ryzen with good-enough graphics to run UHD graphics (all text, except browser and occasional video)
[13:50:32] <Bytram> nod nod
[13:51:12] <AzumaHazuki> honestly, even a first gen ryzen will do that, or even the cut-down Athlon APUs
[13:51:31] <Bytram> Have been tempted a couple times by some Acer offerings, but get the sense that they are not of the same build quality.
[13:52:38] <Bytram> My earlier Athlon 64 lasted me... 7? 8? years
[13:53:30] <Bytram> Finally ran into lots of recoverable SMART errors on IDE hard disk. Knew my time was running out.
[13:55:18] <Bytram> A connection here at SoylentNews was sending some systems out for recycling and figured I'd get good use out of it and gifted it to me. That was the E6400 and I got it around Independence day in '14 or '15, IIRC.
