[00:31:57] <Bytram> done. [sic] updated to [<em>sic</em>] (it's a nit, but sic is Latin and, in original writing, foreign words and phrases are generally set off in italics.
[00:32:00] <Bytram> )
[00:32:26] <requerdanos> understood, filed away
[00:32:47] <Bytram> As you can well imagine, editing a story on a cell phone has its... challenges. ;)

[00:35:36] * Bytram laughs at #rss-bot[c] with so many stories talking about the best $x for 2021... like nothing better will come in the next 360+ days?
[00:42:34] <requerdanos> don't forget the $y best things to watch on netflix! or the $z best movies.
[00:49:48] <Bytram> 'zactly!
[00:50:02] <Bytram> time to make a bite to eat; biab

[13:22:01] <Fnord666> requerdanos you there?
[13:22:24] <requerdanos> yes
[13:22:40] <Fnord666> quick question about the drivrless cars story.
[13:23:23] <Fnord666> What are the <slash> tags supposed to create?
[13:24:15] <requerdanos> <slash-related href="whatever link">Name Of SN Story</slash> creates the related stories links in the box below the article
[13:24:37] <requerdanos> as documented here, https://github.com

[13:25:30] <Fnord666> Oh, I see now where it's being rendered. Thanks!
[13:25:53] <requerdanos> you're very welcome.
[13:26:39] <Fnord666> Quite interesting. I'll have to use that in the future.
[13:28:13] <Fnord666> I see the first one automatically picked up the headline. Why did you explicitly spell out the next two? Was it not picking up the rest correctly?
[13:29:04] <requerdanos> I manually spelled all three out, and rehash ate them and did whatever it does. For example, it changed <slash-related> into <slash type="related"> iirc
[13:29:45] <Fnord666> Ah, ok. Interesting as well.
[13:29:55] <Fnord666> I'll have to play around with it in dev.
[13:30:00] <Fnord666> Thanks!
[13:30:49] <requerdanos> the only difference I see about that first link is that it has a "similarity score" in the similar & related stories box on the editing screen
[13:31:21] <requerdanos> only *other differencde
[13:33:57] <Bytram> morning!
[13:34:45] <Fnord666> Good morning!
[13:35:30] <Bytram> 2 cups coffee and still not awake. :/
[13:36:10] <Bytram> thanks for keeping the queue filled! Hope you got a bit of a break over the long weekend!
[13:36:25] <Fnord666> I did and it was appreciated.
[13:36:44] <Bytram> =)
[13:36:48] <Fnord666> How were your holidays?
[13:36:52] * Bytram needed it, too.
[13:37:04] <Bytram> quiet
[13:37:38] <Bytram> for some reason, my schedule was entirely thrown off -- kept forgetting what day of the week it was!
[13:37:47] <Fnord666> Same here!
[13:39:00] <Fnord666> requerdanos I just wanted to say welcome again and thank you very much for volunteering your time to help us on the site!
[13:39:13] <Fnord666> It is greatly appreciated.
[13:39:14] <Bytram> Also, my mom's birthday (may she rest in peace) was shorty after Christmas. Though it has been many years since she passed, it tends to bring a pall over things.
[13:39:23] <requerdanos> Thanks for making me feel welcome.

[13:39:35] <Bender> karma - teamwork: 260
[13:39:53] <Fnord666> Bytram yeah I could see how that would put a damper on the holiday
[13:40:01] <requerdanos> "editor" is a better volunteer position than "finding all the junk and modding it down"
[13:40:05] <Bytram> requerdanos: what Fnord666 said!
[13:40:11] <Fnord666> LOL
[13:40:16] <Bytram> Why not both!
[13:40:27] <Fnord666> eh, I still try to do that as well.
[13:40:29] <requerdanos> why not both indeed, heh, I am almost out of mod points
[13:40:53] <Fnord666> There's enough junk comments to go around!
[13:40:58] * Bytram has 1 mod point left
[13:41:04] <requerdanos> but that's not "my contribution" now as it was previously; now that aspect of things is just a bonus
[13:41:14] <Fnord666> And yes, I often run out of mod points in any given day.
[13:41:45] <requerdanos> Truth be told I set out to mod good posts up. isn't my fault I found some junk instead.
[13:42:42] <Fnord666> I prefer that as well but the comments are what the comments are. You take the bad with the good
[13:42:53] <Fnord666> and mod appropriately
[13:43:42] <Bytram> as I was reminded recently, moderation is intended as a guide to someone who is reading later. Help to sift the wheat from the chaff. Also, that this is more like Olympic scoring... I may like a comment, but does it really rate, say, a '4'? Is it comparable to other comments rated 4? Better? Not as good?
[13:44:57] * requerdanos pictures olympic judges holding up cards saying "-10!"
[13:45:12] <Bytram> lol!
[13:45:30] <Fnord666> I tend not to look at the score so much like that. If it is an insightful comment I mod it up. If it's a troll I mod it down. I can't say that I've looked a comment that was at +3 and daid "yeah that's about what this comment should be"
[13:46:04] <Fnord666> s/daid/said/
[13:46:04] <SedBot> <Fnord666> I tend not to look at the score so much like that. If it is an insightful comment I mod it up. If it's a troll I mod it down. I can't say that I've looked a comment that was at +3 and said "yeah that's about what this comment should be"
[13:46:34] <Fnord666> I'm pretty sure they don't have a -1 card but that would be quite the shock.
[13:49:25] <Bytram> used to be just 0(?) to 10.
[13:50:08] <Bytram> then for some competitions upper bound as 6 or 7
[13:50:42] <Fnord666> That scoring is so subjective that it's not even funny.
[13:51:51] <requerdanos> so, another way it's like moderation.
[13:51:55] <Bytram> some people set their threshold to, say 2. Do the stories that are so selected warrant such a rating? What about a threshold of 4? or 5?
[13:52:38] <Fnord666> If you're reading at +5 the comment section is going to be pretty small.
[13:53:18] <requerdanos> depends how much time one wants to put into it I suppose. +5 should be good for even the busiest executive.
[13:56:07] <Bytram> there was a time on the green site where each comment score's count (-1 .. 5) was listed as individual link. So, I could say, see there were too many comments for the time I had available to read *all* of them. So, I could pick the 4-or better link and get a quicker scan through just the better comments.
[13:57:04] <Fnord666> LOL
[13:57:39] <Fnord666> requerdanos yep, the executive summary
[13:57:40] <Bytram> Hmmm, I could prolly enable it on dev so you could see it in action.
[13:58:52] <janrinok> .... that's my story posted for this month!
[13:59:17] <Fnord666> Hi janrinok!!!!

[14:00:56] <janrinok> I knew that I should not have pressed Enter on that comment!
[14:01:03] <Bytram> lol!
