[00:19:21] <systemd> Thanks for submitting this story. It appears that no editor has yet selected this story to be run. At least a week has passed since the story was submitted, and if an editor was going to have selected it, they would likely have done so by now. It has, therefore, been removed from the submission queue.

[00:47:38] <AzumaHazuki> ...this worries me. i've been very deaf since childhood. i don't want to become demented

[01:34:36] <Bytram> AzumaHazuki: is it ongoing/progressing or stabilized?
[01:35:03] <AzumaHazuki> i thought it was stabilized. it was until about 2 years ago. since then it's gotten marginally worse
[01:35:39] <AzumaHazuki> ...i have to contend with the idea that i may end up entirely deaf at some point. and the only signs i know are several cultures' variants on "up yours"
[01:36:50] <Bytram> Sorry to learn of that!
[01:38:24] <Bytram> Say it is 5 or 10 years from now. What would you likely suggest to your today self? IOW, is it easier to learn sign language while you can hear?
[01:42:05] <Bytram> Not entirely unrelated. i was diagnosed with a very mild stroke last fall. Didn't notice any mental impairments. But lately I sometimes notice word "lookup" problems. Like SSD pre-NVMe primarily used a <blank> connector? (SATA) I *know* that, but it kind of defies direct access, if that makes any sense. It's still in there, but it as if I have to take a mental detour to get to it. Or it could just be my getting older.
[01:42:19] <AzumaHazuki> i don't have the time or energy, and indeed am not sure i will survive to see 2021
[01:42:38] <AzumaHazuki> it's all blank fog past late June or so
[01:43:32] <Bytram> ISTR your mentioning a similar ... "blankness" quite a while ago?
[01:44:20] <AzumaHazuki> yes. it bothers me, because it could mean either "everything is so chaotic that reasonable extrapolation is impossible," or "you can't see anything because your body dies around then and this no longer concerns you"
[01:44:58] <Bytram> For some reason as a child, I came upon the signs for the "alphabet" in ASL. Still remember quite a few all these umm years and years later.
[01:46:15] <Bytram> I sure can't read it as fast as they sign it, but on those occasions when I counter someone signing, my doing just a simple "H" and "I" sure helps break the ice.
[01:46:36] <AzumaHazuki> :)
[01:49:36] <Bytram> Yuppers! Shoulda seen the instant smile!
[01:59:21] <AzumaHazuki> ...the avatar I'm using...in the cartoon she's from, her sister Hatsumi is mute, so they speak sign language (JSL) together
[01:59:57] <AzumaHazuki> someone actually animated what some of it looks like. it turns out hand signs for the katakana syllabary are a lot clearer than for the latin alphabed
[02:13:47] <Bytram> yep, ASL is not just translated English. Apparently there is a different grammar, from what I have heard.
[02:15:08] <Bytram> I suspect along the lines of infix vs postfix in mathematical notation.
[02:15:57] <Bytram> Never gave much thought to SL for different cultures/nationalities.
[02:21:34] <Bytram> Fnord666++ thanks so much for all the stories you pushed out for the weekend!!!
