[00:50:04] <Bytram> chromas: if you are around, the story queue ran dry... I quickly pushed out a story and fast forwarded it; I've got a what-I-hope-is-a-ready-to-go submission waiting... An chance you could take a look at it and push out, if it's acceptable?

[08:05:24] <janrinok> Bytram, Any idea who changed the release CV stories to include 'spoilers' rather than text? These ARE NOT SPOILERs. Are we trying to save electrons or something. The text is in the extended portion - people will only go that far if they want to read it, so marking things as spoilers is wrong. IMO.
[08:09:09] <janrinok> Spoilers are designed to prevent a story spoiling a plot or content or other media. The edited submissions have already been cut back to indicate the information contained, which isn't always obvious from the title alone.
[12:34:13] <Bytram> janrinok: IIUC, it was a specific request made in the comments, and that takyon implemented it (I saw his comment and am strictly going from that). Although I agree that those should not be literal spoilers, it is the only thing we have atm for a way to toggle visibility of text. Is on my list of things to do when I can get a proper source tree on a lappy and try to implement.
[12:38:06] <Bytram> that's right up there with getting search to work in things other than just stories, creating automagically update funding status, finer granularity on the HoF page (By week, month, year, and all-time; with a flag to indicate which nick was an author or not - takyon has, atm, 5776 story submissions!), and getting the stats pages to work.

[13:07:03] <chromas> is it because they only have it a little ruff?
[13:08:54] <janrinok> Bytram, 2 things. CV has arrived in my area. We are currently OK, but we/I have specific daily tasks to complete to ensure S's well-being. 2. What is the problem with text? Why do we need any additional shortening of stories? If people have clicked the Continue/Extended Text option they _want_ to read more.
[13:13:27] <janrinok> Travel outside of the home is not recommended for S, so I will NOT be getting my next respite break which was due to begin on Tuesday. I am knackered. Not had a day off since 22 Dec.
[13:33:48] <Bytram> janrinok: (1) So sorry to hear about CV arriving in your area! I was planning to attend a local conference to be held in two weeks and just learned that it was been canceled. Had attended every one for the past 15 years.
[13:34:25] <Bytram> (2) I don't know for certain. Give me a couple minutes and I'll see if I can find the comment that instigated this.
[13:39:50] <Bytram> Well, looks like you already found the causal comment: https://soylentnews.org

[13:40:58] <Bytram> Maybe a new "Skip to Comments" button could help? (That's just off the top of my head... I *think* that should be quite easy to implement. I'll need to play around a bit, first.
[13:57:58] <janrinok> Many of the 'summaries' are now nothing more than a title and a Spoiler - that tells me nothing. Every other story we publish we provide a summary for people to read. We have done that for every story in the round-up too. Why do they need an extra Spoiler to condense them down to nothing?
[14:00:09] <janrinok> If we insist on spoilers for round-ups why do we not do the same for every other story that we publish from day to day? We might as well do away with the round-up and simply go for publishing each story as we would any other. At least we could read the summary.
[14:03:27] <Bytram> AFAICT, when ON THE MAIN PAGE, the user only sees the "Intro Copy", they have to click on the "[Contnues...]" text element to see anything more. That is NOT the case when they have clicked on, say, the story title and are now looking at the entire story. In THAT case, the entire story is expanded... and there is no easy way to skip past the rest of the expanded text to get to the comment section. It seems to me we just need an anchor
[14:03:28] <Bytram> tag presented at the end of the Intro Text that, when clicked, repaints the page and takes the user to where the comments start. It SHOULD be relatively simple to implement in the templates; I am trying to track down the correct one, right now.
[14:04:45] <janrinok> OK, if you feel it is necessary. I personally do not find scrolling a problem.
[14:05:06] <Bytram> conceptually, it is straightforward, but there are numerous complications depending on whether or not the user is an AC, editor, or logged-in-user... and if not an AC, whether they have preferences selected for such things as Low Bandwidth and the like.
[14:06:01] <Bytram> Not a problem for me with my huge monitor at home; not so much fun on a smaller display (e.g. 1024x768) or on a mobile.
[14:09:13] <janrinok> It must be a particular mobile then, I do one quick flick and it shoots down the page. Scrolling this story - before the spoilers were added - took two flicks.
[14:15:23] <Bytram> I dunno, just trying to understand a request from the community, and to my eye it does not sound terribly un-doable... unless I start running into hard-wired (non-template) code created to improve comment display performance when we exceeded something like 100 comments.
[14:16:18] * Bytram *still* vividly recalls when it was rolled out to the community long before I had finished creating and running my tests. Nooooooooo!!!!
