[07:40:45] <janrinok> chromas, TheMightyBuzzard We still prefer submissions from our community to those found by bots, but those that use a bot such as upstart to extract the text are seen as a user submission.
[07:42:58] <janrinok> carny - we need a reputable source to quote for all of our material. Of course we still want original material but we consider our communities' original source as reputable. However, quoting youtube, Facebook or Twitter as your only source to back up your statements is unacceptable. We all know that people can print any rubbish they want on social media without it being verified.
[07:46:04] <janrinok> carny - if I knew who pewdiepie was I would be able to answer your earlier question. What is the interest in 50 million people talking about a Tweet? If the topic is being discussed by 50 million people it will be reported elsewhere.
[07:46:46] <janrinok> then we can see if it is of interest to our community and decide whether to publish it or not.
[08:21:31] <janrinok> Fnord666, good point on the validity of retweets as a supporting source.
[12:27:00] <Bytram> janrinok: Fnord666: chromas: carny: TheMightyBuzzard: Using a tweet or YouTube video or facebook post (or whatever) as the *sole* source for a story is... problematical. Because anyone can post anything on social media, its accuracy is quite frankly: suspect. When a different source quotes that tweet, video, post or whatever -- AND provides corroboration or validation -- that seems, to me, to be an entirely different "animal" and
[12:27:00] <Bytram> becomes a *potentially* acceptable source for a story on SoylentNews. That said, such sources are also subject to the same verifications and validations that we would apply to any other story submission, starting with a "sniff test" as to whether or not the submission even seems plausible or is someone pushing an agenda or has an axe to grind or whatever. Thoughts?
[12:28:02] <Bytram> The preceding validations should also apply to user original content... trust, but verify. Submissions should provide trustworthy sources to corroborate their submission.
[12:35:43] <TheMightyBuzzard> i was thinking more of what was said being the story instead of it being a source of information
[12:41:09] <Bytram> Like most things here, I am advocating guidelines rather than hard-and-fast rules. If POTUS tweets he has declared war on Russia (and since his tweets are *official* statements according to the white house (I can find a link to that official statement if you need one)), one *could* use that as the sole source for a story... but I'd expect in short order that other news outlets would notice said tweet, and them seek other sources to
[12:41:09] <Bytram> corroborate the proclamation -- be it rocket launches, warships steaming en route to a port, bombs being dropped from bombers, missiles launched, etc. Again, can start with that "source" but seek independent corroboration and use *that* as our story source.
[12:41:42] <Bytram> s/them/then/
[13:11:49] <janrinok> I think that we are all thinking along the same lines in this regard.
[13:42:24] <janrinok> Bytram, FYI S has several medical appts later in the week which will mean I will be out for several half-days. Might not be editing so much on those days.
[13:48:22] <Bytram> janrinok: I appreciate the forewarning! Best wishes for the outcomes of the appointments!!!
[16:38:15] * Bytram just noticed the queue ran dry; quickly pushed out a story. Now I really gtg. Laters!
[16:39:03] <Bytram> Fnord666: Thanks for pushing out a couple stories AND... congratulations on reaching 4,500 stories posted! Woo Hoo!
[16:39:12] <Bytram> gtg; afk; latrs!
