[00:10:31] <carny> does the auto posting speed up if there are more stories in the q?
[00:29:44] <chromas> posting is manual, but may be sped up if we have lots of good subs
[00:30:04] <chromas> or slowed down if there's a dearth
[01:32:48] <Bytram> Fnord666: Great idea!
[01:35:44] <Bytram> carny: Nothing gets "auto posted", for a story submission to make it to the site, an editor has to look at it, specify a date/time for it to appear, and affirmatively release it.

[02:50:59] <Bytram> Time for me to hit the sack. Have a great night everyone!!

[07:52:19] <carny> Bytram: right you told me that before ;]
[07:52:44] <carny> i'm talking about the schedule of posts going from the approved q to the front page
[07:58:54] <chromas> I think they used to post stories with a shorter interval, and would vary it according to the queue size
[07:59:34] <chromas> it's since settled into the 1:20 or whatever we all know and love today, except on weekends or whenever there's a shortage in the queue
[08:22:02] <carny> i was just trying to understand how it works and see if it's worth trying to sumbit more stuff
[08:23:09] <chromas> Go for it
[08:23:37] <chromas> But only if you have time and stuff
[08:23:56] <chromas> And if you're lazy, you can always hit up the bots when you find something interesting ;)
[15:14:51] <Bytram> FWIW, it was a couple months after site launch when I became an editor, so I cannot easily speak as to very early story spacing, but we've settled on a bit under minutes between stories on weekdays, and something around 2h15+m on weekends
[15:16:34] <Bytram> with the size of the community, we did not want to run so many stories that it precluded some depth of conversation on any given story nor so few that people saw nothing with which they were interested in discussing as any given story likely did not appeal to everybody.
[15:16:42] <Bytram> carny: ^^^
[15:18:35] <carny> is too much good content really a problem?
[15:18:59] <Bytram> at the outset, it was a genuine concern
[15:19:32] <carny> problems are concerns but concerns are not all problems ;]
[15:20:58] <Bytram> Also, there is the matter of having enough editor attention to notice the story queue is near to running out and to pushing stories from the subs on through.
[15:21:56] <Bytram> we have no schedule of which editor handles stories when. It is all a matter of who thinks to looks when they do, perceive a need or opportunity, and then making the time to process one of more subs.
[15:22:58] <Bytram> we find it helpful to have some idea of the approximate cadence to judge where things stand in light of the purely volunteer, ad hoc processing we do.
[15:23:42] <Bytram> has been mostly working for over 5 years (WOW!)... I couldn't ask for a more conscientious and hard-working bunch of volunteers!
[15:24:34] <Bytram> And, they do a great job, too -- checking links, finding and subbing stories when nothing looks "usable" in the subs queue, etc.
