[00:12:28] <Bytram> whereto? https://arstechnica.com

[01:22:25] <Bytram> takyon: Chromas: either of you around?
[01:23:05] <Bytram> Fnord666: You here?
[01:23:38] <Bytram> I just put out a 'meta' story about certs expiring for the site, due to go live at half past the hour.
[01:24:03] <Fnord666> Evening!!!
[01:24:18] <Bytram> It's time-sensitive, hence my pushing it out, but I *would* appreciate it if someone could take a look-see to see if I messed up something obvious.
[01:24:30] <Fnord666> yup. I'm on it!
[01:24:34] <Bytram> YAY!
[01:25:39] * Bytram is not awake enough to come up with some good comeback about your being "on it"... flattened something-or-other?
[01:26:58] <Fnord666> :)
[01:27:21] <Bytram> how'd I do?
[01:27:34] <Fnord666> looking good so far
[01:27:40] * Bytram hopes there were not too many glaring errors
[01:27:50] <Bytram> or even squinting errors!
[01:29:11] <Fnord666> Nope, it all looks good.
[01:29:16] * Bytram gives up and entirely closes his eyes
[01:29:23] <Bytram> oh, whew!
[01:29:36] <Fnord666> updated
[01:29:54] <Fnord666> if you can't see the errors then they can't see you?
[01:30:05] <Bytram> It stinks having to write a story like that, but if it were me and suddenly a site went sideways, I'd like to know it wasn't something on my end
[01:30:22] <Bytram> monkeys, see / do / hear something something evil
[01:30:33] <Fnord666> yep. Saw the issue this am and was wondering what was up.
[01:31:08] <Fnord666> If it's monkey see, monkey do, who flung the first poo?
[01:31:21] <Bytram> hmm, might update the story to add a few links like this: https://crt.sh
[01:31:23] <upstart> ^ 03crt.sh | soylentnews.org
[01:31:43] <Fnord666> and it's live
[01:31:50] <Bytram> huh?
[01:32:10] <Bytram> oh, the story. doh!
[01:32:15] <Fnord666> :)
[01:33:41] <Fnord666> I hadn't seen that site before. interesting
[01:34:36] <Fnord666> So our main site cert is expiring tomorrow?
[01:35:43] <Bytram> nod nod
[01:36:21] <Fnord666> ugh. bad timing
[01:38:09] <Bytram> ugh... <b> != <br>
[01:38:24] <Bytram> updated
[01:39:00] <Bytram> would prolly be better as an unordered list.
[01:39:09] <Bytram> At least I got it out there.
[01:39:59] <Bytram> I've got an unclosed bold or something in there
[01:40:02] <Bytram> I'm on it
[01:40:39] <Fnord666> "I have it helpful to post these queries"?
[01:41:57] <Fnord666> yeah, something's gone haywire
[01:42:07] <Bytram> it keeps freaking out with the links
[01:42:45] <Fnord666> Second and fourth do not have aref elements
[01:43:20] <Bytram> they WERE in there... but the editor keeps chewing stuff up... saved an emtpied version and trying again
[01:43:20] <Fnord666> the a tag does not have an aref field I should say
[01:43:28] <Bytram> I no what u mean
[01:43:44] <Fnord666> :)
[01:43:57] <Fnord666> I've had it eat links occasionally in the past
[01:44:58] <Fnord666> I'm a gonna stay out of editing the story until you're done
[01:46:13] <Bytram> preview...
[01:46:39] <Bytram> updated.

[02:04:30] <Bytram> AFAIK, both are on beryllium
[02:04:30] <Fnord666> just going to mention that wiki. is also refusing connections
[02:04:41] <Bytram> confirmed

[02:10:05] <Bytram> =)
[02:10:53] <Fnord666> nice
[02:12:55] <Bytram> up this way, it is *still* a well-known, oft-recited phrase given (in jest) in response to a query about how to get somewhere
[02:13:16] <Fnord666> Wife wants us to move to Maine when I retire.
[02:13:27] <Fnord666> I tell her you can't get there from here
[02:13:38] <Bytram> LOL
[02:14:05] <Bytram> You might want to get her to be more specific as to what *part* of the state... for example:
[02:14:18] <Bytram> oh, exec is AWOL... doh!
[02:14:20] <Bytram> hmm
[02:14:26] <Bytram> #weather presque isle, maine

[02:15:15] <Bytram> from top to bottom, those are about 250 miles apart
[02:16:12] <Bytram> put another way, leaving from Kittery (in the south), one can drive 5 hours and arrive in either Presque Isle, Maine or... New York City.
[02:16:42] <Fnord666> I believe she's thinking more on the Presque Isle end of things
[02:16:59] <Bytram> Having, of course, passed through New Hampshire, Massachusetts, AND Connecticut along the way
[02:17:16] <Bytram> that's cold, man.
[02:17:49] <Bytram> ~rtime x
[02:17:54] <Bytram> ~time x
[02:18:43] <Bytram> don't get me wrong, it's gorgeous countryside up that way (in "The County" as they call it), but winters can be brutal, start early, and end late.
[02:19:04] <Bytram> So, if you enjoy clearing snow, go forit!
[02:19:13] <Bytram> ;)
[02:19:40] <Bytram> Fnord666: btw, another 17 more stories and you'll break 2300! https://soylentnews.org

[02:20:47] <Fnord666> You're only 29 off of 5300 yourself!
[02:22:33] <Bytram> heh... hadn't noticed!
[02:23:18] <Fnord666> Climate data from Wikipedia looks like they don't actually get a lot of snow but serious cold
[02:23:20] <Bytram> that's like a story for every card in 101 decks of 52 playing cards, with a few left over
[02:23:34] <Bytram> oh, you noticed the cold, eh?
[02:23:41] <Bytram> forgot to mention that.
[02:23:56] <Fnord666> so the record low is -37F
[02:24:06] <Bytram> it's not that it gets that cold, it's that people tend to be underdressed... just wear more layers!
[02:24:33] <Fnord666> The dog's going to hate going outside to piss
[02:24:40] <Bytram> I once went skiing in NH when the temp was -20F
[02:25:12] <Bytram> Was -34F when I got up, but had warmed up a bit by the time I got to the mountain. =)
[02:25:25] <Fnord666> Brrrrr
[02:25:34] <Bytram> no problem... will just find a convenient corner indoors!
[02:25:58] <Fnord666> ski lodges tend to be cozy
[02:26:26] <Fnord666> as are snow bunnies....
[02:26:34] <Bytram> especially if you are on the INside

[02:32:23] <Fnord666> lol. ninja'd
[02:33:08] <Bytram> I once drove a (slow) lap around the south loop of the 'ring
[02:33:28] <Bytram> The north loop is another animal all together
[02:33:32] <Fnord666> never got to try it myself
[02:33:51] <Bytram> if you have not see it yet, that is a must-see video.
[02:34:01] <Bytram> I couldn't take my eyes off the gauges
[02:34:07] <Fnord666> Yup.
[02:34:16] <Bytram> to watch the acceleration was amazing, and the deceleration, too.
[02:34:34] <Bytram> I can't imagine what kind of whipsawing around that driver must have been feeling
[02:34:41] <Fnord666> Like watching a video from a helmet cam while driving the Isle of Mann TT loop
[02:35:16] * Bytram can't wait for Volkswagen to put up a full on-board vid of the pike's peak race!
[02:35:38] <Fnord666> I've been looking forward to that as well
[02:35:55] <Bytram> I searched a few hours ago and came up empty. :(
[02:36:33] <Bytram> on the last straight on the 'ring, that car was doing 358/359 kph
[02:37:20] <Fnord666> I can't imaging how much downforce the car is generating
[02:37:37] <Bytram> well, hopefully, *enough* !!
[02:37:53] <Bytram> would not want to get airborn, methinks
[02:38:01] <Fnord666> well it didn't go airborne, so...
[02:38:31] <Fnord666> nope. like watching hydrofoils when they get air underneath them on a lake I imagine
[02:38:39] <Bytram> ouch
[02:39:42] <Bytram> so, on the back straight, as they were approaching the finish line... 359 kph is ~ 223 mph
[02:40:11] <Fnord666> yup
[02:40:27] <Bytram> I've done 235 kph on the Autobahn
[02:40:41] <Bytram> which is ~146 mph.
[02:41:21] <Fnord666> That's moving
[02:41:31] <Bytram> yep.
[02:41:40] <Bytram> was a rented Porsche Boxter Convertible
[02:41:56] <Bytram> took two credit card imprints to rent it
[02:42:20] <Fnord666> well you know...
[02:42:30] <Bytram> I was *very* careful with it that morning, getting used to the controls, traffic, etc.
[02:42:51] <Fnord666> Been passed on the autobahn like we were standing still
[02:42:54] <Bytram> wasn't until mid afternoon when I could wait no longer and finally took it on the autobahn
[02:43:19] <Fnord666> While we were actually doing ~90 mph
[02:43:20] <Bytram> took a while to find a spot with no speed limit, then started running through the gears
[02:43:25] <Bytram> yup!
[02:43:40] <Bytram> Got it to ~ 200kph in 4th.
[02:43:49] <Bytram> Shifted it into 5th and... nothing
[02:43:56] <Bytram> would go no faster
[02:44:06] <Fnord666> bummer
[02:44:10] <Bytram> I'm wondering if it was some economy mode?
[02:44:19] <Bytram> didn't quite make sense
[02:44:45] <Fnord666> possibly a governor of some sort since it was a rental maybe?
[02:44:46] <Bytram> now, mind you, I'm moving at a pretty rapid clip while I am trying to sport this out.
[02:44:49] <Bytram> *sort
[02:45:03] <Fnord666> yeah, not a time for suprises
[02:45:10] <Fnord666> surprises
[02:45:16] <Bytram> I was heading towards Bonn and it was nearing rush hour
[02:45:29] <Bytram> really did NOT want to rearend anybody, yanno?
[02:45:35] <Bytram> then, it finally hit me...
[02:45:37] <Fnord666> definitely not
[02:45:47] <Bytram> it's a convertible, and I had the top down
[02:46:00] <Bytram> that was enough to disturb the aerodynamics to restrict the top speed
[02:46:08] <Fnord666> well that's a drag
[02:46:24] <Bytram> now, mind you, there was absolutely NO wind noise or buffeting, no shaking, nothing... handled like it was on rails!
[02:46:29] <Bytram> *groan*
[02:46:34] <Fnord666> :)
[02:46:54] <Bytram> 120 mph in an open top convertible and it felt like I ws doing 60 mph in a closed top car.
[02:46:56] <Fnord666> yeah we have a Jetta that settles right down as you go past 80
[02:47:26] <Fnord666> Porsche does know how to design a fast car
[02:47:49] <Bytram> so, had to find a place where I could safely pull over, put the top up, and then drive along waiting for another patch of road sans speed limit to arrive
[02:47:55] <Bytram> finally found one
[02:48:08] <Bytram> got it up through 3rd, into and through 4th,
[02:48:20] <Bytram> ran up the revs, into 5th
[02:48:26] <Bytram> and now it's still accelerating!
[02:48:41] <Fnord666> there you go!
[02:48:54] <Bytram> Entered 5th at about 200 kph, and then it just kept climbing slowly
[02:49:15] <Bytram> remember, though, I was approaching Bonn as rush hour approached?
[02:49:26] <Fnord666> uh oh
[02:49:51] <Bytram> well, tractor trailers have either (60) or (80) -- a circled number shoing their maximum permitted speed in kph
[02:49:55] <Bytram> *showing
[02:50:11] <Bytram> that's 36 / 48 mph
[02:50:20] <Bytram> and I'm doing about 130 at this point
[02:50:52] <Bytram> now, if someone behind one of those trailers pulled out to pass... and I wasn't paying attention...
[02:51:08] <Bytram> and the traffic *was* getting heavier...
[02:51:40] <Bytram> so, even though the car was *still* accelerating, I called it 'good' at 235 kph.
[02:51:49] <Bytram> Besides,
[02:51:52] <Fnord666> wise choice
[02:52:11] <Bytram> I got 200 'free' kilometers per day... and in 50 minutes I'd have used them all up
[02:52:31] <Bytram> additional kilometers were only $7.00 *each*
[02:52:39] <Fnord666> oh dear
[02:53:08] <Bytram> so, kinda put a bit of a damper on any touring I may have wanted to atempt
[02:53:32] <Bytram> I returned the vehicle with plenty to spare, but it was a thought in the back of my ind.
[02:53:35] <Bytram> *mond
[02:53:38] <Bytram> *mind.
[02:53:49] <Fnord666> 3rd time's a charm
[02:54:04] <Bytram> Okay, that does it, I can barely get one sentence out without a typo... I guess I really should be on my way to bed, eh?
[02:54:12] <Bytram> As always, a pleasure chatting with ya!
[02:54:17] <Fnord666> ditto
[02:54:28] <Bytram> ciao for now!
[02:54:29] <Fnord666> good night and pleasant dreams Bytram
[02:54:35] <Fnord666> ciao
[02:54:47] <Fnord666> a domani perhaps
[02:54:50] <Bytram> And the same to you, your wife, and all those you hold dear
[02:54:58] <Bytram> *chuckles*

[02:55:19] * Fnord666 chuckles
