[00:22:59] -!- charon_ has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
[02:50:06] <Bytram> ~tell janrinok Sorry to hear about your having family problems -- my thoughts and prayers go out to you that all will be well. Family comes first... besides the FNGs, there's still the FOGs here, too. =)
[03:40:50] <charon> oooh, cmn32480 is in trouble.... https://soylentnews.org

[03:46:18] <Fnord666> meh. I strip those out too most times
[03:46:27] <charon> same here
[03:46:51] <charon> i was going to answer, but since OO_ asked specifically for cmn...
[03:47:17] <Fnord666> :)
[03:47:22] <Fnord666> btw good evening
[03:47:36] <charon> hiyo. how goes it?
[03:47:44] <Fnord666> good. yourself?
[03:47:57] <Fnord666> watching CS:GO tourney ATM
[03:48:03] <charon> better now. i was furious for a while at work
[03:48:27] <Fnord666> oh. not good.
[03:48:50] <charon> my "co-worker" was, as usual surfing on the computer and letting me field all the customers
[03:50:02] <Fnord666> nice of him
[03:50:07] <charon> and when he looked up at one point to notice there were 3 people to help, he decided to... not engage with any of them, but attempted to steady the trash barrel that i was dumping stuff into
[03:50:27] <Fnord666> very helpful. not.
[03:50:38] <charon> really, who the fuck needs a trash barrel steadied ever?
[03:50:45] <charon> gah
[03:51:23] <charon> so i told him i did not need his help for that, and he looked around and actually talked to a customer
[03:51:37] <Fnord666> well at least that
[03:51:57] <charon> yep
[03:52:43] <charon> anyway, all over now.
[03:53:44] <Fnord666> yep
[03:54:37] <charon> they have tournaments in FPS? teams and everything?
[03:54:43] <Fnord666> oh yeah
[03:55:08] <Fnord666> Serious stuff with real money.
[03:55:33] <charon> huh. i guess i knew there was for starcraft and LoL but not FPS
[03:55:40] <Fnord666> $450,000 prixe pool for this tourney
[03:55:44] <Fnord666> prize
[03:55:45] <charon> whoa
[03:55:59] <Fnord666> half for the win
[03:56:31] <Fnord666> both CounterStrike and Call of Duty have major tournaments with professional teams
[03:57:04] <charon> seems weird at first glance, but i suppose it's not different than physical sports

[03:57:30] <charon> and fewer concussions
[03:57:54] <charon> holy shit. $20M
[03:58:04] <Fnord666> blackops 3 tourney had $2,000,000 prize pool
[03:58:25] <Fnord666> yeah, that's DOTA
[03:58:29] <charon> wild. even hearthstone
[03:58:44] <Fnord666> $9M for the win in DOTA2
[03:59:43] <Fnord666> for the 2016 International
[03:59:58] <charon> i think my aps is like... .3
[04:00:18] <charon> mind the decimal
[04:00:34] <Fnord666> lol
[04:00:56] <Fnord666> yeah my K/D in Call Of Duty ranges from 2.5 to 0.25
[04:01:22] <charon> i really like overwatch, but i get slaughtered because i'm old and slow
[04:01:28] <Fnord666> and that's against the 10 year olds.
[04:01:36] <Fnord666> yeah, me too.
[04:02:31] <Fnord666> saw the best video recording of an aimbot cheater in overwatch getting "pwned"
[04:03:08] <charon> best kind of cheater. one who loses even though he's cheating
[04:03:47] <Fnord666> apparently the aimbotter ran into a team of professional players who were from various teams that had gotten together on one guy's twitch stream to just fool around as a team
[04:04:13] <Fnord666> anyway the pros stomped him a new ahold
[04:04:15] <Fnord666> ahole
[04:04:16] <charon> lol
[04:04:22] <Fnord666> literally.
[04:04:40] <Fnord666> they ganged him as soon as me pawned, then stomped the corpse
[04:04:48] <Fnord666> s/me/he/
[04:04:48] <sedctl> <Fnord666> they ganged him as soon as he pawned, then stomped the corpse
[04:04:50] <exec> <Fnord666> they ganged him as soon as he pawned, then stomped the corpse
[04:05:14] <Fnord666> It was hilarious.
[04:05:19] <charon> that's pretty funny. and they didn't break a sweat doing it, i bet
[04:05:52] <Fnord666> not really, no.
[04:06:22] <Fnord666> The aimbotter seemed to be helping some others level up but the others weren't that good.
[04:06:40] <Fnord666> I guess you can hire people to help you like that?
[04:07:04] <charon> odd, since levelling does nothing in overwatch
[04:07:05] <Fnord666> didn't work in this case
[04:07:13] <Fnord666> really?
[04:07:18] <charon> yep
[04:07:27] <Fnord666> i've not played it and watching it is even confusing to me a bit
[04:07:51] <charon> the only thing you get for a level is emotes/skins/whatever. it's all cosmetic
[04:08:06] <Fnord666> interesting
[04:08:28] <Fnord666> not sure why then
[04:08:45] <charon> by winning matches, you get higher rank. but if you can't sustain that rank with your own skill, you'll drop immediately
[04:08:58] <Fnord666> seems like that would just get you matched up with better players later.
[04:09:03] <charon> exactly
[04:09:18] <Fnord666> and get you a$$ handed to you
[04:09:24] <charon> not by level, but by win/loss rank
[04:10:32] <Fnord666> one of the CS:GO tournaments was nearby last year. If they do it again this year I may go
[04:10:45] <charon> and yeah, as far as confusing. i totally agree. until i played for a few hours, videos made absolutely no sense to me
[04:11:33] <charon> get your work team together and enter?
[04:11:42] <charon> or just watch?
[04:12:13] <Fnord666> lol. watch maybe.
[04:12:38] <Fnord666> There are ongoing online tournaments that teams compete in to qualify for the major events
[04:12:49] <Fnord666> we wouldn't even stand a chance to qualify.
[04:12:57] <charon> yeah
[04:13:00] <Fnord666> To many geezers :)
[04:13:08] <charon> i hear ya
[04:13:29] <Fnord666> with slow reflexes
[04:14:06] <Fnord666> Some of our interns join occasionally and we have to divy them up or get our butts handed to us.
[04:14:41] <Fnord666> we played 4 interns against 6 of us and they still obliterated us in most of the game types.
[04:14:46] <charon> ouch
[04:15:14] <charon> TIL: age related sly-ness doesn't work in shooters
[04:15:27] <Fnord666> ya
[04:16:07] <Fnord666> although there are a couple of game modes that do allow it to even the odds and we beat them on a couple of the maps they weren't familiar with.
[04:16:23] <Fnord666> but overall it was a slaughter
[04:16:53] <charon> old guy mode: your player moves 30% slower and has wobbly aim
[04:17:02] <Fnord666> mind you this was also just a spontaneous thing and no one had practiced together
[04:17:09] <Fnord666> exactly
[04:18:03] <charon> that would be an amusing easter egg. or even a per player handicap in deathmatches
[04:18:37] <Fnord666> In general COD automatic matchmaking stinks
[04:19:38] <charon> doesn't everyone say that? about every game?
[04:19:45] <Fnord666> probably
[04:20:42] <Fnord666> we often end up drafting to even things up.
[04:21:02] <charon> ooohh, pick me, pick me!
[04:21:09] <charon> aw shucks
[04:21:33] <Fnord666> lol been there

[04:23:01] <charon> that is so cold
[04:23:44] <charon> yep, we'll just see how your next raise comes out, bill
[04:24:27] <Fnord666> I just turn on friendly fire. No one has any fire discipline
[04:26:06] <Fnord666> one match I did that neither team had a single enemy kill
[04:26:13] <charon> lol
[04:26:22] <Fnord666> both teams spawn camped themselves
[04:26:31] <charon> that is great

[04:32:49] <Fnord666> yeah, I'm getting empty content sometimes
[04:33:16] <charon> that happened to me a few days ago. or i'd get the html but no css
[04:35:18] <takyon> it just shows blank white. no error msg or guru meditation
[04:35:23] <takyon> didn't check the source though
[04:35:35] <Fnord666> just a little <head> section

[05:14:58] <cmn32480> this week has been dog shit
[05:16:11] <cmn32480> god I love metallica
[05:16:24] * cmn32480 is excited to have ticekts for a concert in May

[05:16:52] <charon> they're alright, but not quite my style
[05:17:02] <cmn32480> everybody has their own music likes and disklikes
[05:17:18] <charon> but seeing a good band live is always awesome

[05:17:45] <charon> hah
[05:17:49] <cmn32480> [his response was "duh?"
[05:17:53] <charon> lol
[05:18:38] <cmn32480> he also said somethignt o the effect of " you aren't gonna be able to hear anything, so you won't be any good in the office either
[05:18:43] <cmn32480> "
[05:18:51] <charon> hahah, good boss
[05:19:10] <cmn32480> he's a hard rock/metal guy
[05:21:27] <charon> years ago, my wife got me tickets for the pixies. and also arranged for my brother to drive up to go with me. it was great
[05:22:42] <cmn32480> it is all about what you enjoy
[05:22:52] <cmn32480> I like Metallica's music...
[05:23:05] <cmn32480> this will be the first time I have had the $$ to see them in concert
[05:23:17] <charon> you might like the pixies, though they're more punk inflected
[05:23:20] <cmn32480> I also love Billy Joel. Far FAR more than Metallica
[05:23:33] <cmn32480> have seen him in concert 7 or 8 times
[05:23:41] <cmn32480> several time with Elton John
[05:23:43] <charon> i bet he puts on a good show
[05:23:51] <charon> billy joel, that was
[05:23:53] <cmn32480> he does
[05:24:32] <cmn32480> for an old guy (in his 60's)
[05:24:36] <charon> heh
[05:24:39] <cmn32480> who plays the piano and the guitar
[05:25:11] <cmn32480> there ain't nothign like 60k people with lighters adn cell phones singing piano man
[05:25:15] <charon> with a catalog that deep, he could play just greatest hits and fill out a couple hours
[05:25:33] <cmn32480> him and Elton are easy 4 hours plus
[05:25:55] <cmn32480> both times I saw them
[05:26:50] <charon> the one guy i'd love to see live, but probably never will is Tom Waits
[05:27:16] <charon> he rarely tours, and when he does the tickets sell in an instant
[05:27:17] <cmn32480> don't know him
[05:27:25] * cmn32480 googles furtously
[05:28:19] <charon> he's hard to pigeonhole. he does piano ballads like billy joel, but also some really weird atonal clangy post punk hobo jungle music

[11:07:00] <Bytram> as for "#NoFragmentIdentifiers" -- I'm a bit torn. Ostensibly, it's to inform our limited vision readers that there are no better links to directly bring that part of the page directly into view; OTOH, it just happens to serve HIS purpose to try and send a message to the web site owner. In deference to our limited-visibility readers, I erron the side of leaving that in, as well.

[21:53:45] <Bytram> and how are you doing today?
[21:55:02] <charon_> i am fine. i had some extra hours in during the week, so i came in late so as not to go overtime. so in effect, a short day today
[21:55:19] <Bytram> sounds like a pleasant change
[21:55:25] <charon_> quiet, nice weather. just hanging out
[21:56:17] <Bytram> quiet days can be disturbing until I realize how hectic some of the days during the holidays were, and they seem to be a lot more easily "accepted"

[22:03:07] <Bytram> oh, those comments? yep.
[22:03:12] <takyon> what do you want to know about Ryzen
[22:03:52] <takyon> confirmed 4-8 core chips, aggressive pricing, performance possibly on par with Intel's $1000 chips
[22:03:58] <charon_> i have been toying with the idea of doing my next build with a GPU passthrough so i can run a windows VM for games but the main system is linux.
[22:04:29] <charon_> but the ryzen chips coming out don't have an internal GPU, so i'd need a second video card
[22:04:57] <takyon> they don't. I was kind of taken aback by that as well, but it makes sense given what they are going up against
[22:05:36] <takyon> that's not to say there won't eventually be a Ryzen 14nm desktop chip with iGPU eventually, but it doesn't look like it will be one of the launch chips
[22:06:08] <charon_> right. so i'm still of two minds about waiting for the next set
[22:06:30] <takyon> one interesting thing is that I hear AMD will skip 10nm and try to go from 14nm -> 7nm
[22:06:50] <cmn32480> that's half.. it'll be twice as goodly
[22:07:05] <charon_> need more magnifying glasses
[22:07:11] <takyon> if the scaling was real it would be 4x as good
[22:07:16] <takyon> but that's not how that stuff works
[22:07:40] * cmn32480 pulled twice as goodly from his ass and has no clue how that scaling works
[22:08:52] <takyon> I tend to wait as long as possible before replacing my computers charon_. I guess you should ask yourself when you want it, and how much GPU power you need.
[22:09:37] <charon_> honestly, i'm not coming up to the limits that i need, but i was planning to pass my current PC down to my kids, and build another for myself
[22:09:41] <takyon> I don't know if there's some loss of GPU efficiency from using your VM thing, or if you want to play newer games that wouldn't do so hot on integrated graphics, necessitating an external GPU anywayu
[22:09:50] <charon_> so i can probably afford to wait a while
[22:10:24] <charon_> the idea of the passthrough GPU is that only the VM has access to it. so in theory it's like playing on bare metal
[22:12:08] <takyon> so what games are you trying to play? skyrim? morrowind? starcraft 2? space engine? GTA V?
[22:12:44] <takyon> aka would it need a discrete GPU or would internal graphics do OK
[22:12:52] <charon_> nothing too crazy. skyrim is prolly the upper limit.
[22:13:11] <takyon> Skyrim scales very low to crap specs
[22:13:15] <charon_> my main purpose is to move to linux and bag windows except when i'm gaming
[22:13:18] <takyon> err, very well
[22:14:37] <charon_> i already have a dual boot setup, but it's enough of a pain that i never leave windows just in case i may be playing somthing
