[14:14:04] zz_janrinok is now known as janrinok
[14:15:00] * n1 sigh
[14:15:06] <n1> janrinok !!
[14:15:10] <janrinok> n1!!
[14:15:20] <janrinok> why the sigh?
[14:17:20] <n1> slightly irritated by the opposite spectrum bullshit, from the "sjw" bullshit in the scifi/racism story to the "fox news means this lies" bullshit in the trump/clinton story
[14:17:57] <janrinok> I've 2nd'ed them, but I don't take much notice of those stories. Not my cup of tea
[14:18:08] <n1> we just can't wait for the race to the bottom of the intellectual sewer
[14:18:57] <n1> sure, im just disappointed in the knee jerk reponses people have to their trigger issues and organizations
[14:20:30] <janrinok> such stories tend to attract those from hard on one side or the other. I find that the discussions don't tend to amount to much, although potentially there is a good topic to discuss rationally --- they just don't!
[14:21:17] <n1> that was my point in the scifi/racism story, as crap as the source is, there's lots of discussions to be had
[14:21:39] <n1> but there was a lot of pre-emptive reactions to imaginary SJW's
[14:22:23] <n1> the first comment calls it out as 'sjw shit' and then the replies to my comments went on about how 'you can't have a discussion with these sjw people, you just have to shout at them'
[14:22:23] <janrinok> Friday night in US land - few beers, perhaps a smoke, etc
[14:23:02] <n1> no one apparently noticed that the first comment was the anti-sjw, no one was responding to anything, just their perception of what comments would come, even thought they didn't
[14:24:01] <janrinok> agreed, but it's sort of what I have come to expect, so I don't read them. Perhaps, I'm just as bad as they are for making an assumption on the content .... ;)
[14:25:30] <janrinok> and, now that you have explained your sigh, you sound a little bit more than 'slightly irritated' by it
[14:30:32] <n1> it has given me the inspiration to write a journal on banned sources, where i will go through all the mainstream and several alternative outlets and explain in clear terms why we should never run any stories from these publications.
[14:32:37] <janrinok> sounds like a good idea - I could always filter those when I run Arthur
[14:33:36] <n1> janrinok, wouldn't work, the point is i'd target all of them, because they're all biased with vested interests
[14:35:20] <janrinok> I have this dilemma. We are only here to support the community, but often I don't support the stories that are being submitted. If I refuse to post them I suppose I am guilty of censorship of a kind.
[14:35:39] <n1> no
[14:35:49] <janrinok> The only way I can hand-on-heart ignore them is if there are sufficient more good stories that I can choose instead
[14:35:57] <janrinok> sufficiently*
[14:36:11] <n1> if you delete the stories you don't like before anyone else gets to have a look, then that would be censorship of some kind
[14:36:39] <janrinok> well, do we risk censorship by collective action?
[14:37:07] <janrinok> The problem is when the queues run low. We often have very little to choose from
[14:37:12] <n1> we risk it, but i don't think we do it
[14:38:00] <janrinok> I don't think we do either, at least for the moment, but we used to get excited when the sub queue went below 20. Now we get excited when it goes above that!
[14:38:09] <n1> my two submissions that have been in the queue for a while now are there because i like to challenge the community and their preconceptions of things.
[14:39:02] <n1> and i would have run the scifi/racism story for the same reason, the community needs to be able to take on the bullshit with a level of maturity, there are constructive discussions to be had about any topic from any source
[14:39:54] <janrinok> perhaps that sort of story would fare better if it wasn't put out on a Fri/weekend? Don't know, it's a genuine question
[14:40:38] <n1> the scifi one was bad at any time, but the point is we have an open community that is not censored to respond to that kind of flawed methodology
[14:41:41] <janrinok> well we have 63 comments scoring 2 or higher, it's just that there is an awful lot of rubbish in the others.
[14:42:13] <n1> but just say "this is bullshit" and walking away doesn't contribute anything, and someone stumbling across the site and story is going to learn nothing from who can shout the ad hominem the loudest
[14:42:51] <janrinok> agreed, but how do we change it?
[14:43:21] <n1> well i try to add some reasonable comments, which seemed to work on the scifi story
[14:44:33] <janrinok> and your comments are all high scoring so plenty of people agree with you - but I wish I could find a way of convincing the other commentators
[14:44:33] <n1> but i'm very wary of imposing my own agenda (whatever it is) on the stories and sites, and i don't have the energy to hold the community's hand while they learn critical thinking and analysis on social/political issues
[14:46:28] <n1> it amused me last night that i got 'informative' mods for essentially just saying 'explain why the article is wrong, rather than just saying it is'
[14:46:53] <janrinok> lol - take the compliments when you get them! We Eds don't get that many!
[14:47:49] <n1> i think i do pretty well at being an editor and commenter at the same time :p
[14:47:53] <janrinok> I got one a few days back where I was complimented for my choice of dept - wasn't expecting that
[14:48:10] <n1> now that is a rare thing!
[14:48:51] <n1> gets harder and harder to come up with those damn depts
[14:49:19] <janrinok> I hate have to think of them - that is the worst part of this job in my opinion
[14:49:25] <janrinok> hate having*
[14:50:09] <janrinok> have you got time to 2nd ed my next story out please?
[14:50:10] <n1> it can be, just try and amuse myself now with a pop culture reference or lyric from a song
[14:50:15] <n1> yup
[14:50:18] <janrinok> thx
[14:50:39] <n1> i was about to take a smoke break, but for you, of course ;)
[14:50:49] <janrinok> its just gone out!
[14:51:22] <n1> did you catch the comments yesterday about Arthur?
[14:51:38] <janrinok> nope - I take it they we not complimentary?
[14:51:55] <n1> it was fine, just happened that most of the arthur stories that went through
[14:52:01] <n1> came from The Register
[14:52:04] <janrinok> brb
[15:14:31] <janrinok> nurse came for S, and I've just started cooking dinner.
[15:17:17] <n1> give my best to S, hope she's doing ok
[15:21:41] <janrinok> have done - thanks
[18:06:07] <janrinok> Anyone available for 2nd eds, please?
[18:22:57] <n1> yup
[18:29:31] <janrinok> thanks n1
[18:29:56] <janrinok> n1 can you think of a good dept for your halal shop story?

[18:30:59] <takyon_> hi janrinok
[18:31:17] <janrinok> takyon hi to you too - I've just 2nd'ed your story
[18:33:12] <takyon_> cool
[18:33:56] <n1> janrinok, i had another story to add to that one now...
[18:34:01] <n1> http://www.bbc.co.uk
[18:34:03] <yo_momma> ^ 03Cannes bans burkinis over suspected link to radical Islamism - BBC News
[18:34:24] <takyon_> I saw that story
[18:34:25] <janrinok> OK, I've already posted but I will re-edit to include it
[18:34:42] <takyon_> add fuel to the fire!! wheeeeee
[18:35:02] <n1> i couldn't pass them up, it's newsworthy imho
[18:35:38] <n1> it's up to the people who comment how they choose to respond to it, if at all.
[18:36:06] <n1> we might be cool with that kind of government oversight in commerce and clothing...
[18:36:39] <n1> janrinok, i would go with 'beer-and-bacon' dept because i'm lazy
[18:37:13] <janrinok> lol - that'll do and is in keeping with the story - might add bikinis in there somewhere
[18:37:31] <n1> sounds like a plan
[18:38:15] <takyon_> I might just start submitting space stories from now on
[18:38:19] <takyon_> all space, all the time
[18:38:22] <takyon_> I want off this rock
[18:39:35] <n1> heh
[18:39:35] <takyon_> if life extension works reasonably soon, I could have all the time I want to explore the solar system
[18:40:26] <takyon_> now we have a possible new gas giant, "Planet Nine", and icy dwarf planets all over the damn place
[18:40:47] <takyon_> probably hundreds of +100km radius objects
[18:40:53] <n1> well, private space exploration companies are a thing, get yourself a kickstarter/vcs/grant money and get to your own space ship
[18:42:30] <n1> be the first man to fly to pluto and declare it a planet
[18:44:46] <n1> there was just a commercial on TV for a movie on dvd... "out now to buy and own"
[18:45:25] <takyon_> that solid base of DVD users
[18:45:55] <takyon_> I assume that commercial had something to do with digital downloads
[18:46:04] <takyon_> "rent and own"?
[18:46:41] <janrinok> n1, takyon : please take a look at 'The French Solution - or How I Learned to Laugh More' to be released at 02:47 UTC. Is the title too flippant?
[18:47:04] <n1> i only heard it, didn't mention any download services/websites
[18:47:26] <takyon_> it's a weird headline
[18:47:46] <janrinok> k, any suggestions
[18:48:06] <janrinok> I think both stories are way off the plot - even for the French!
[18:48:52] <takyon_> help us out n1
[18:48:59] <takyon_> meanwhile I'm going to edit the body of it
[18:49:34] <n1> i like the headline
[18:49:43] <n1> i mean i'm not saying it's the right one... :
[18:49:46] <n1> :p
[18:50:01] <takyon_> moved the source links, added some quotes around burkini
[18:52:01] <takyon_> i guess its ok
[18:52:05] <n1> i don't have any better suggestions
[18:52:10] <takyon_> i'm sure the readers will make their displeasure known
[18:52:23] <janrinok> I find it amazing that something that covers the same amount of skin is legal on the street but not on the beach, but topless and full nudity at Cannes is perfectly acceptable.
[18:53:15] <janrinok> I walked into so many obstacles in Cannes because I was 'distracted' by other pedestrians ...
[18:53:34] <takyon_> too bad you didn't walk into the distractions
[18:53:40] <janrinok> I did try
[18:54:01] <janrinok> ... but they all saw me coming - or something
[19:07:16] <janrinok> time for me to go - see you guys tomorrow!
[19:08:39] janrinok is now known as zz_janrinok
[19:11:16] <n1> take care zz_janrinok
