[04:17:36] <Bytram> btw, i have not forgotten about trying to write a template and code so that the site goals and receipts could be entered in a normal form, and the nagger could be automatically updated.
[04:18:36] <Bytram> takyon: adding links to a couple SN stories on the space-based gravitational wave detector story
[04:19:22] <takyon> k
[04:20:39] <Bytram> takyon: you make it hard to find anything wrong with your submissions... I gotta find *something* once in a while or I'll start to doubt my QA skills! ;)
[04:20:50] <Bytram> and, if that is the worst I can find... VERY well done!
[04:20:54] <Bytram> takyon++
[04:20:54] <Bender> karma - takyon: 23
[04:20:55] <takyon> i've gotten lazier with them
[04:21:04] <takyon> bigger blockquotes, generic intro text
[04:21:38] <Bytram> it all takes time; trying to maximize productivity at an acceptable level of quality.
[04:21:47] <Bytram> no complaints from here!
[04:27:06] <Deucalion> One observation... can we please keep our TFS to a minimal blockquote of the site we are sourcing with a little more original verbiage please? The trend of blockquoting all but the last sentence or punctuation mark of another site's content is really not cricket. At this point we are parasites in the food chain, let's not kill our hosts mmkay?
[04:30:04] <takyon> I try
[04:30:05] <Bytram> k
[04:30:20] <takyon> point out examples of mine that you think are too blockquoted if you have specific concerns
[04:30:35] <takyon> or catch it in the editing process
[04:43:31] <Deucalion> I don't get involved in the editing process if I can avoid it, just generically saying make TFS a TFS not a verbatim copy with a one liner at the end. It was not an observation made of you directly takyon, just a meant as a general editorial poke to recognise we aggregate other site's content, therefore we should not republish it lock, stock and barrel but give a nod to the originator we source and push some traffic their way.
[04:45:11] <takyon> ideally i don't want to quote more than 50% of TFA
[04:45:31] <takyon> with short pieces on reuters, bbc, etc. I might push that limit to 75%
[04:45:57] <takyon> best case scenario I'm quoting 10-25% from 1-3 articles
[04:46:35] <takyon> or 0%, completely written copy, which I usually only do on very dense hardware articles due to lots of information available and excitement
[04:47:46] <Bytram> takyon: your submission are usually some of the easiest ones to work with; I'm thinking just keep it in mind in the future -- no drastic changes necessary!
[04:48:04] <Bytram> and... I just pushed out another story; that makes six for tonight.
[04:48:11] Bytram is now known as Bytram|away
[04:48:29] <Bytram|away> gonna call it a night.
[04:48:34] <Deucalion> ~night Bytram|away
[04:48:35] <Bytram|away> g'night everyone!
[04:56:37] <Deucalion> takyon, that seems sane. I'm just conscious that at some point we will want to move from aggregator to source position... so best not to be a dick about things while we are in aggregation phase :D Long game :)

[12:50:11] <Bytram> I put out a story last night that looks to me to be kind of, but not really, a dupe of one that just went out... need another opinion.

[12:58:04] <CoolHand> :)
[12:58:07] <Bytram> lol
[12:58:23] <Bytram> yanno, it's a pretty stupid thing, but I get such a charge out of doing that!
[12:58:32] <Bytram> it's the simple things in lifew that are the most precious, sometimes
[12:58:41] <Bytram> much obliged!
[12:58:51] <CoolHand> sorry I don't magically show up when people ping me.. I haven't figured out how to get a notification through my tmux session to my remote server running my irc client
[12:59:19] <Bytram> sounds intuitively casual to the most obvious observer! ;)
[13:01:59] <CoolHand> IMHO, it's not a dupe, but more of a different angle on what's been happening.. truth be told, I haven't really kept up on the whole story, but thats what it seems to me..
[13:02:26] <Bytram> k, thanks!
[13:02:38] <CoolHand> we've ran quite a few stories on it I know, so there's the question of how much is overwhelming, and how much is just right.. :)
[13:02:41] <CoolHand> I don't know that answer
[13:02:52] <Bytram> yeah, I thought that, too.
[13:03:07] <Bytram> but at midnight, my reasoning skills were a little deficient
[13:03:12] <CoolHand> :)
[13:03:18] <Bytram> I'd be happy to leave it out
[13:03:31] <Bytram> iow leave it 'not display'
[13:03:44] <CoolHand> I don't have a strong opinion one way or another... you can let it hang for a bit and see if someone else wants to chime in maybe..
[13:04:02] <Bytram> sounds like a plan!
[13:04:18] <Bytram> otoh, how are YOU doing? long time no chat
[13:08:22] <CoolHand> yeah.. things have been stressful b/c of this big project go-live at work, plus I've been sick on top of it.. (i probably normally would have called in or at least worked from home on Tuesday - go-live day.. but b/c of the project couldn't) but at least I've survived a couple of days of it now with no major breakage *knock on wood* and starting to feel a bit better *knock on wood again*
[13:09:13] <Bytram> as long as the knocks are on wood and not from "the school of hard..."
[13:09:18] <Bytram> stress--

[13:10:44] <cmn32480> sorry... stupid job getting in the way
[13:10:46] <Bytram> got a 'kinda dupe' in the story queue... willing to take a look?
[13:10:50] <CoolHand> I hear ya
[13:10:52] <CoolHand> ditto
[13:10:59] <cmn32480> we are shuffling offices...
[13:11:03] <Bytram> it's the apple stories.
[13:11:14] <Bytram> better to shuffle offices than orifices
[13:11:18] <Bytram> nograb
[13:11:23] <CoolHand> haha
[13:11:48] <Bytram> we ARE easily amused, it seems.
[13:12:05] <cmn32480> yep
[13:12:12] <cmn32480> no change tehre
[13:12:15] <Bytram> I still hold this to be true: Wit, is intellect, dancing.
[13:13:48] <Bytram> anyway, we've had a lot of coverage on the apple stories, I approved one last night by hugh pickens which I noticed this AM kinda dupes one that just came out this AM. flagged it 'not display' and would appreciate another view point
[13:14:37] <cmn32480> its a dupe
[13:14:42] <cmn32480> shoulda been a merge
[13:14:51] * cmn32480 hangs his head in shame
[13:14:57] <Bytram> yeah, was afraid of that.
[13:15:09] <Bytram> nah, story came in pretty late, IIRC
[13:16:42] <Bytram> dang... not easy to find out what time the story was submitted
[13:16:52] <cmn32480> sure it is
[13:17:09] <cmn32480> the page for the IPID has it
[13:17:10] <Bytram> found it: Thursday March 03, @12:40AM
[13:17:23] <cmn32480> that si when it was accepted for publishing
[13:17:45] <Bytram> yep. I did find it there, but was hoping for it on the submission-display page which DOES have the date/time of the story being accepted.
[15:43:13] <CoolHand> did we decide we're nixing the apple story then?
[17:05:56] <takyon> I'm not sure that the Hugh Pickens article is 100% dupe
[17:06:06] <takyon> bytram
[17:06:36] <takyon> meh w/e
[17:12:23] <CoolHand> takyon: that was my opinion too, but like I said earlier, I haven't followed it all that close, so wasn't sure
[17:12:51] <CoolHand> so, I scheduled another one there, and if we want to run it, we can move it back a bit or move mine
[17:12:52] <takyon> if anything it's a detail I forgot/didn't notice when I submitted a similar article posted a day earlier
[17:13:02] <takyon> however I think readers may be getting apple/FBI fatigue
[17:13:33] <CoolHand> yes, I expressed that reservation also.. I feel it, but I haven't really been all that into the story, so not sure I"m representative

[17:24:03] <takyon> I remember seeing an article about a preferred way to find alien life: by focusing on stars that would see Earth transiting the sun, just like we find planets by looking for transits using Kepler
[17:24:10] <takyon> not sure if we had an article on that
