[01:35:21] * Bytram also discovered, when he went out to his car after work, that he had locked his keys in his car.
[01:35:42] <takyon> wow
[01:35:43] <cmn32480> DOHHHHH!!!!
[01:35:54] * Bytram is grateful for amex roadside assistance

[01:36:38] <Bytram> double doh!
[01:36:46] <cmn32480> suck
[01:36:49] <takyon> i think i got in before your edits to the uk article cmn
[01:36:53] <takyon> i wouldn't know
[01:37:07] <cmn32480> I'll check
[01:37:20] <cmn32480> after I finish the webtorrnt article
[01:37:36] <takyon> cool
[01:37:52] <takyon> i hit 400 subs not long ago, and 500 is rapidly approaching
[01:38:34] <takyon> i put the luke skywalker article at a nice timeslot so more people could see it
[01:38:37] <takyon> i think it will be amusing
[01:38:51] <Bytram> so I get home from work, and no sooner get in the door after a grueling day at work and start relaxing than I hear the washing machine start up next door 20 minutes after the last-start-time posted on the wall
[01:39:29] <Bytram> it should complete soon and I'll have a little chit-chat with the perpetrator^W neighbor
[01:39:36] <cmn32480> sounds as though you need a meal and a long nap!
[01:39:39] <chromas> Courtesy is for squares
[01:40:25] <takyon> last-start-time? that's some hard ass stuff
[01:40:39] <Bytram> no biggee, we're just rebooting servers tonight and I need to be up at 0500 to be at work tomorrow for an 11 hours shift that starts at 0700.
[01:40:50] <Bytram> ding!
[01:40:56] <Bytram> off to have a chat. afk biab
[01:40:58] <chromas> Does that include irc?
[01:41:05] <cmn32480> nope
[01:41:06] <takyon> seeya
[01:41:06] * chromas gets the shakes
[01:41:08] <chromas> whew
[01:41:17] <cmn32480> he's looking for the perpetrator... er... neighbor
[01:48:58] <Bytram> the washer has stopped, but they haven't yet come by to put clothes in the dryer...
[01:49:01] <Bytram> may need to step out abruptly.
[01:49:28] * Bytram wonders if they will wait until just after I go to bed to decide it's time to start it.
[01:50:08] <cmn32480> duh?
[01:50:11] <cmn32480> that's what I'd do
[01:50:54] * Bytram looks around for a hidden video camera
[01:53:50] <chromas> Hide some crayons in the drier
[01:54:35] * cmn32480 tosses in a pack of gum for good measure
[01:55:08] <Bytram> and, when I need to use the machine tomorrow?
[01:55:36] <cmn32480> complain to management that some asshat put crap in the drier and now it is ruined and they need to fix it or replace it!
[01:56:15] <Bytram> I'll just have a friendly chat. They may not have noticed the sign in the first place. They may have extenuating circumstances. "Do not attribute to malice that which can be explained by ignoreance."
[01:56:58] <cmn32480> print a bigger sign. tape to the front of the machine.
[01:57:09] <Bytram> otoh, if they are a jerk, I can report them to mgmt, or even hint that they may find a machine unplugged in the future...
[01:57:15] <Bytram> I've been down this route a few times already.
[01:57:42] <Bytram> "Say something in anger and you'll make the best speech you'll ever regret."
[01:59:56] <chromas> Are they coin-operated? They could become more expensive to use at night :)
[02:00:26] <chromas> Or, if they don't take coins, they could at night :)
[02:04:21] <cmn32480> unplug them in the middle, and they have to insert coins to restart
[02:04:38] <cmn32480> don't piss off the nerds... we are evil
[02:04:51] <Bytram> afk brb
[02:06:16] <Bytram> false alarm
[02:06:51] <Bytram> I had a situation a few years ago where there were a couple weeks of midnight-ish loads of laundry started.
[02:06:55] <Bytram> I started with a friendly note
[02:07:02] <Bytram> it continued
[02:07:16] <Bytram> I added a note explaining the impact it had on my life
[02:07:40] <Bytram> they replied, basically, they had long days and it was the only convenient time for them.
[02:07:57] <Bytram> this is by notes left on the machines , mind you
[02:08:23] <Bytram> I pointed out that I, too, had crazy hours, prolly worse than there's but I got my laundry done during daylight hours
[02:08:38] <Bytram> finally, I cautioned aobut maybe losing power
[02:08:39] <Bytram> it continued
[02:08:50] <Bytram> they found a dryer unplugged midload
[02:08:54] <Bytram> I don't know how that happened
[02:09:02] <Bytram> I didn't have any more problems
[02:09:22] <Bytram> I also mentioned it to mgmt office
[02:09:28] <Bytram> they put up a new note
[02:09:41] <Bytram> but there's a bit of turnover in the building so I like to
[02:09:53] <Bytram> take the view hat it might be someone new is unaware of the impact it is having.
[02:10:26] <Bytram> ususally the first notice suffices.
[02:15:57] <cmn32480> pen mightier than the sword?
[02:19:28] <Bytram> I guess you could say that
[02:20:10] <Bytram> another time, I found out that someone's load of laundry stopped because it was off-balance, and they were just restarting it and needed to dry it after.
[02:20:28] <Bytram> I saw it was unintentional, they understood the impact, and I never had another issue with them
[02:20:45] <Bytram> another time, laundry was starting at a bit after midnight
[02:20:48] <Bytram> more than once
[02:21:11] <Bytram> I got up and waited in the laundry room for them to put it in the dryer.
[02:21:43] <Bytram> come to find out, it was a veteran who had recently returned from tours in the middle east
[02:21:52] <Bytram> and was now working 60-70 hours a week.
[02:22:36] <Bytram> I saw he had extenuating circumstances, but he also saw the disruption it was causing.
[02:22:58] <Bytram> in the end, he moved out a few months later. and there were prolly only a couple more times it happened.
[02:23:55] <Bytram> so, I'm entirely willing to be more than reasonable, but if it is just a matter of convenience for you, well that's another story... especially on repeated occassions.
[02:24:31] <cmn32480> heh

[02:32:09] <PointerCache> ^ 03'Ex Machina,' here we come: A new algorithm helps computers learn the way we do | Computerworld ( http://www.computerworld.com )
[02:34:07] <chromas> it's supposed to strip off the #tk.rss_all
[02:34:16] <chromas> is "#" a special char in regex?
[02:34:24] * Bytram didn't notice -- must be tired!
[02:34:35] <Bytram> chromas: not that I am aware of
[02:34:57] <chromas> the server shouldn't get that part anyhow, unless some javascript sends it in (which some sites, like google do)
[02:35:25] <Bytram> really? /me ponders
[02:35:45] <Bytram> I don't see why it would not be passed on.
[02:35:59] <chromas> it's for the browser; it's supposed to tell it where to scroll to
[02:36:10] <Bytram> (it's been over a years since I read the RFCs)
[02:36:11] <chromas> the #part
[02:36:31] <Bytram> that is an *implementation* of the use of URIs
[02:36:31] <chromas> I think google uses it though for queries for some reason if js is turned on
[02:38:18] <Bytram> a URI/URL starts with a scheme (e.g. ftp, http, https, etc) and then has a domain (soylentnews.org) and then there is a (for lack of a better atm) 'string' that is to be interpreted as per the scheme.
[02:39:18] <Bytram> that's from memory, and I've had an exhausting day so I could be off on that, but I don't think I'm too far off.
