[15:29:37] <janrinok> upstairs are 2 bedrooms and bathroom for guests, we live entirely on the ground floor, and the cellar is garage, workshop, storage etc

[15:34:33] <janrinok> the nice thing - which is trivial I suppose - is that if I am in the middle of a big job, I don't have to put everything away and I can continue where I left off the next day

[15:35:46] <janrinok> All the pictures that I see of homes in the US suggests that they are much bigger than European homes. Probably the same number of rooms, but more space overall

[15:40:44] <janrinok> oh, I suppose I should put a kitchen in there but it is really an open plan kitchen/dining/reception room

[15:41:36] <cmn32480> here, things are sold by bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage
[15:42:33] <janrinok> I find that square footage can be a bit misleading. For instance, we have 2 bedrooms upstairs built into the roof space.

[15:43:09] <janrinok> But you cannot actually stand at the sides of the room because of the sloping roof. A bed is OK there, but you couldn't put a chair there

[15:43:49] <cmn32480> J had one of those rooms when she lived at her parents
[15:44:01] <janrinok> that sort of thing. Although we have got 6 bed spaces upstairs, only 4 are really suitable for adults

[15:44:29] <janrinok> nothing wrong with it - it makes the most of the floor space
[15:45:04] <cmn32480> yes, but if the space is only for guests, and you don't use it, no worries. best possible use of the space

[15:46:01] <janrinok> when we arrived here S could still walk and it was our plan to use upstairs for our bedroom and 1 guest room, and to spread out more on this floor

[15:46:29] <cmn32480> and adapting to changing circumstances is a fine skill to have
[15:46:40] <cmn32480> though I suppose you are well aware of that
[15:47:27] <janrinok> silly things still annoy and frustrate me - the doors are fine, until somebody needs to use a wheelchair, and then they are a tight fit. Still usable but not as good as it could be
[15:48:03] <cmn32480> not a whole lot you can do for that. widening dooras is a tough gig
[15:48:14] <janrinok> especially in load bearing walls

[15:48:49] <janrinok> but, hey, that what life is all about

[15:49:55] <janrinok> If we widen the doors, you have to think about what is on both sides of the wall - one door cannot be widened unless we redesign the kitchen again!

[15:51:17] <janrinok> as it is, we both know (although don't mention) that S will probably be bed-bound in 5 - 10 years time.
