[00:29:46] <mrcoolbp> CoolHand: you around ?
[00:30:04] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient/Azrael: you around?
[00:39:34] * mrcoolbp is going to work on the Vaccination story
[01:05:33] <cmn32480> mrcoolbp: Anything I can do to help?
[01:06:35] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: hmm, I think an excercise in writing some submissions would give you a good view into the editing job = )
[01:07:48] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: http://logs.sylnt.us

[01:07:52] <mrcoolbp> for ideas
[01:08:07] <cmn32480> mrcoolbp: Interesting.. I think there is one in dev that somebody said was "almost perfect" about Disney
[01:10:19] * mrcoolbp is tackling a beast of a submission
[01:19:35] <cmn32480> two subs tossed in mrcoolbp
[01:20:11] <mrcoolbp> yay
[01:20:26] * mrcoolbp might be done with this one in a few
[01:24:04] <mrcoolbp> thanks cmn32480
[01:24:15] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: ferferfergkjleghekghe
[01:24:21] <mrcoolbp> agreed
[01:24:23] <mrcoolbp> I concur
[01:24:44] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient, queue is running dry, got one or two more in ya?
[01:25:06] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: you mean submissions or story queue?
[01:25:08] * mrcoolbp is working on the vaccine one that no one wanted to touch. I'll likely be flamed for it. Should be fun = )
[01:25:29] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient: either, but at this point there's a few submissions, a story or two for the queue would be great
[01:25:45] <Subsentient> sure thing, let me see what I can dig up.
[01:25:53] <mrcoolbp> nice
[01:25:55] * Subsentient looks in the queue
[01:26:03] <mrcoolbp> yay teamwork
[01:26:19] <mrcoolbp> I have juggs silently editing a story or two as well
[01:26:23] * mrcoolbp cracks ye olde whip
[01:26:45] <juggs> yah, should move that convo in here
[01:27:01] <juggs> I'm fettling the NJ Cops story
[01:30:48] <cmn32480> I'm writing as fast as I can between expense reports.... please stop the beatings.... my morale will improve I swear!
[01:31:39] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: you know you like it
[01:31:48] <mrcoolbp> thanks everyone
[01:32:04] <mrcoolbp> janrinok will awake with much less stress knowing we all jumped in to help out
[01:32:52] <cmn32480> if only you were a hot blonde...
[01:32:55] <cmn32480> or brunette
[01:32:58] <cmn32480> or readhead
[01:36:54] <juggs> mrcoolbp, OK I ~think~ that one is done https://soylentnews.org I queued it for 05:49 UTC. Please shout at me if I eff'd something up in it, not that I changed much - think I got a lucky dip with that one, didn't seem to need much editing at all
[01:36:55] <NetCraft> ^ 03I can't!
[01:37:10] <mrcoolbp> juggs: lemme look
[01:37:30] * juggs goes for a smoke
[01:37:37] <mrcoolbp> juggs: queueing is right, enjoy the smoke
[01:46:17] <juggs> You know - that "Author" field has always irked me a little. It's always seemed a little odd to me that it is the editor's nick that gets plonked there rather than the original submitter. That's probably just me though :)
[01:52:34] <mrcoolbp> juggs: well agree and disagree
[01:52:52] <mrcoolbp> juggs: I dare you to compare the original submission and the story I'm about to post
[01:54:46] * mrcoolbp clicks "save"
[01:54:55] <mrcoolbp> brb 5 min
[01:56:37] <juggs> OK - on the "Stories" page, what is the difference between a story with a salmon background vs. one with a yellow background? (salmon may actually be red, my monitor has seen better days and is kinda washed out).
[02:00:59] <juggs> That was a notable rework :)
[02:02:33] <mrcoolbp> juggs: yah
[02:02:37] <mrcoolbp> sec
[02:03:09] <mrcoolbp> juggs: http://wiki.soylentnews.org
[02:03:10] <NetCraft> " 03Wiki: Editing Process
[02:03:18] * mrcoolbp made some graphics
[02:03:41] <mrcoolbp> juggs: also this: http://wiki.soylentnews.org
[02:03:42] <NetCraft> " 03Wiki: Editing Process
[02:05:47] <juggs> gfx are great. 10 seconds squinting at the thumbnail annotations there and now I know. Probably would have been quicker had I clicked on the thumbnail, but I guess I'm a bit of a masochist
[02:06:17] <mrcoolbp> yeah, clicking on the thumbnail, then the whole image is much better, but good to know you are a masochist
[02:06:35] <mrcoolbp> okay, let's do another story
[02:06:41] * mrcoolbp hopes this one will be easier
[02:07:11] <juggs> I'm contemplating clicking on chromas' sub, but I am afraid of goat.se knowing him!
[02:07:27] <mrcoolbp> aye, tis a solid possiblility
[02:07:59] <mrcoolbp> juggs, cmn32480, subsentient, let's vote on the 3d-printed "frozen" castle story
[02:08:10] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: I vote to delete.
[02:08:24] <mrcoolbp> I'll tiebreak
[02:08:44] * juggs goes to read the linked article
[02:09:09] <Subsentient> Just because it's 3D printed doesn't make it interesting. You could 3D print a rubber dog turd too.
[02:09:28] * mrcoolbp reserves comment till the voting is over
[02:10:02] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: Yknow, a good part of the reason I joined editor team was to be the 'quality control' guy :^3
[02:10:22] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient: yeah, rejecting a story is something no one wants to do
[02:11:11] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: Well, if you submit an article that's just a disgusting poem about your itchy balls, I'm going to delete it ^^
[02:11:23] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient: from the original slashcode FAQ (and included in our own):
[02:11:23] <mrcoolbp> Why didn't you post my story?
[02:11:23] <mrcoolbp> This is a tough one.
[02:11:23] <mrcoolbp> We get many submissions every day. Our editors constantly go through these submissions, and try to select the most interesting, timely, and relevant items to post. There are probably as many reasons for stories to get rejected as there are stories, but here are some of the more common ones:
[02:11:23] <mrcoolbp> Badly worded or incorrect submissions
[02:11:23] <mrcoolbp> Broken or missing URLs
[02:11:24] <mrcoolbp> Confusing or hysterical sounding writeup
[02:11:24] <mrcoolbp> It might be an old story
[02:11:25] <mrcoolbp> It might just be a busy day and we've already posted enough stories
[02:11:25] <mrcoolbp> Someone already submitted your story
[02:11:26] <mrcoolbp> Your story just might not be interesting
[02:12:10] * chromas submits a 3d-printed dog turd
[02:12:11] <mrcoolbp> so whether or not it was rejected can depend on the day, or our mood basically = )
[02:12:27] * mrcoolbp beats chromas with a 3d printed club
[02:12:44] * mrcoolbp then deletes submission
[02:13:16] <mrcoolbp> okay, cmn32480 isn't going to weigh in, juggs, we patiently await your vote
[02:13:41] * mrcoolbp tries to edit another story
[02:14:47] <cmn32480> sorry reading it now
[02:14:54] <mrcoolbp> I think I vote to delete TLA's "Spring Eqinox/Supermoon Eclipse Timelapse" too
[02:15:02] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: nah, take your time
[02:15:02] <cmn32480> still working on expenses.... so far the comany owes me about $5k
[02:15:10] <mrcoolbp> nice that!
[02:16:01] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient: re: TLA's video - It's cool that it's his video , but it's kinda potato-y no?
[02:16:05] <cmn32480> too bad Amex want's their $$
[02:16:12] <mrcoolbp> yeah, screw them
[02:16:25] <cmn32480> that didn't take long to read
[02:16:36] <mrcoolbp> vote or die
[02:16:46] <mrcoolbp> that was a little dramatic sorry
[02:16:55] <cmn32480> it's cool... but there is nothing to discuss
[02:17:22] <cmn32480> I'd drop it unless we are in really dire need of stuff for the queue
[02:17:32] * mrcoolbp looks towards Subsentients submission now
[02:17:55] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: good answer
[02:17:58] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: sec
[02:18:26] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: since you can't see the queue, we have only 3 other stories beyond whats been posted
[02:18:41] <mrcoolbp> we are spacing them longer than usual due to the editor drought
[02:18:58] <mrcoolbp> so if that affects your decision, you have the info to vote now
[02:19:08] <cmn32480> mrcoolbp: you are incorrect sir
[02:19:12] <mrcoolbp> ?
[02:19:44] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: I'm talking about the STORY queue, stuff that will juggs and I already posted and are awaiting "deployment"
[02:19:54] <cmn32480> the link in the upper right hand corner that tells us how many stories are in the submission queue waiting to be edited shows us the queue, and the original pre-edited submissions
[02:20:19] <cmn32480> we can't READ the story queue, but we can see the headlines
[02:20:45] <mrcoolbp> what page are you referring to
[02:20:52] <juggs> mrcoolbp, I looked at TLA's sub - but came away thinking "what's the point being made?". But I also came away thinking I don't know enough about the subject at hand, particularly this.. "not a single image using a projection of any sort". I have absolutely no idea what a "projection" is in this context so I feel I can't dismiss it on the basis that I am ignorant of the subject matter and the question posed.
[02:21:34] <mrcoolbp> juggs: a projection in this case is when they use a lense to "read" the image and reproject it onto something, used only for solar events
[02:21:50] <mrcoolbp> juggs: however, I feel the other imagery that he mentions are much more interesting
[02:21:52] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: link?
[02:22:46] <juggs> Subsentient, link is hard to give as it is all enclosed in admin.pl.
[02:22:46] <mrcoolbp> the "projection devices" he describes/is using are cool to have in person because they are relatively cheap, but the imagery that he "pushes aside" are far more interesting from our laymen perspective
[02:23:02] <mrcoolbp> juggs: subsentient is an editor, cmn is not
[02:23:23] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: what page/link are you looking at?
[02:23:30] <juggs> Subsentient, do you have a Stories and 8 Submissions links at the top of the page when logged in?
[02:23:57] <cmn32480> mrcoolbp: https://soylentnews.org
[02:23:59] <NetCraft> ^ 03SoylentNews Submissions
[02:24:13] <Subsentient> juggs: yeh
[02:24:16] <Subsentient> whhy
[02:24:23] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: count the stories in that list
[02:24:26] <mrcoolbp> that's 8
[02:24:35] <mrcoolbp> that's how many are in the "Submission queue"
[02:25:03] <cmn32480> 8 submissions (pre-edit) 3 pending (waiting for their time to display on the main page
[02:25:07] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: the "story queue" as I call it are stories that are in the "stories list" but have not yet been released
[02:25:12] <mrcoolbp> oh
[02:25:13] <mrcoolbp> sec
[02:25:30] <juggs> Stories - shows the subs due to go out and their state of edittedness (and past stories). The Subs link shows new Subs awaiting editing.
[02:25:42] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: where do you see "3 pending" ?
[02:25:49] <juggs> It's somewhat labyrinthine.
[02:26:06] <mrcoolbp> aye
[02:26:13] <chromas> this shows three Pending http://soylentnews.org
[02:26:14] <NetCraft> ^* 03SoylentNews Submissions ( http://soylentnews.org )
[02:26:23] <chromas> oh you just linked it
[02:26:37] <mrcoolbp> omg where
[02:26:46] <cmn32480> mrcoolbp: I email you a screenshot
[02:26:48] * mrcoolbp is a moron
[02:27:06] <juggs> No - I see no Pending on there
[02:28:04] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: rofl, our "supremem" admin privs hides that!
[02:28:13] <cmn32480> on my honor as an Eagle Scout
[02:28:33] <mrcoolbp> cmn that's hilarious, I rememeber pestering them to implement that!
[02:28:46] <mrcoolbp> I so rarely view that page as AC
[02:28:53] <juggs> Ye gads
[02:28:57] <cmn32480> mrcoolbp: that is hilarious
[02:29:12] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480, juggs: I belive you still have yet to vote on the matter at hand
[02:29:25] <juggs> mrcoolbp, which is the matter at hand
[02:29:29] <cmn32480> I see it logged in or not. I guess I'm not special enough to have info like that hidden from me
[02:29:58] <mrcoolbp> juggs: accept/reject 3d-print castle articvle
[02:30:03] <juggs> mrcoolbp, The ice castle thing - delete.
[02:30:12] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: vote
[02:30:43] <juggs> woulda been cool if they were 3d printing an ice sculpture though
[02:30:47] <mrcoolbp> lol
[02:30:56] <cmn32480> we are short on stories. The 3D printed Frozen castle has a little bit of a cool factor. If we set it to run in the wee hours of the morning Eastern Time, maybe... but I think it will only garner ridicule of the editors and our story choices.
[02:30:59] <cmn32480> drop it
[02:31:14] * mrcoolbp deletes
[02:31:35] <mrcoolbp> okay, subsentient, juggs, cmn32480: vote on the TLA eclipse video article
[02:32:17] * juggs abstains on the TLA eclipse video article vote. Insufficient subject knowledge.
[02:32:52] <Subsentient> mrcoolbp: The article quality is very poor but the subject is mildly interesting. Think it can be saved?
[02:33:37] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient: summary quality is easy, I agree the "idea" of the article is interesting, but disagree that the video he posted is interesting
[02:33:43] <mrcoolbp> it's almost interesting
[02:33:57] <chromas> Add some shaky cam and explosions
[02:33:59] <cmn32480> it needs work
[02:34:01] <mrcoolbp> If I were to post it, I would include links to ^
[02:34:08] <mrcoolbp> explosions!
[02:34:23] <mrcoolbp> no I would include links to actually cool eclipse videos
[02:34:48] <cmn32480> any way we can ask him to flesh it out some more and resubmit?
[02:35:18] <cmn32480> like the comment about projections - some info there
[02:35:31] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: like I said, it's not the writing that irks me, the video is just short of interesting
[02:35:57] <mrcoolbp> without watching the video here's the first result on google:
[02:35:58] <mrcoolbp> https://www.google.com
[02:36:23] <mrcoolbp> dmna ads....
[02:36:29] <mrcoolbp> damn ads*
[02:36:42] <cmn32480> yeah... the topic is good, and obviously he put a bunch of work into it, but not the best foot forward for us
[02:37:26] * mrcoolbp votes to delete
[02:37:29] <cmn32480> there were some very nice eclipse videos that showed on the side of his on Youtube
[02:37:45] <mrcoolbp> I feel bad because it's his video
[02:38:22] * mrcoolbp moves on to Subsentients submission
[02:38:23] <cmn32480> perhaps a merged submission?
[02:38:48] <cmn32480> what if I put something together for the Eclipse, and we can add his to the bottom.
[02:41:01] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: I'm down for that merge
[02:41:41] <cmn32480> saves his pride and we get some interesting content
[02:42:06] <mrcoolbp> I like it
[02:42:20] * mrcoolbp nominates cmn32480 to submit = )
[02:42:34] <mrcoolbp> good god Subsentient WTF am I looking at
[02:43:05] <cmn32480> a thankless job is never done...
[02:43:18] <mrcoolbp> thanks buddy
[02:43:26] <cmn32480> I'll get on it as soon as I finish this expense report
[02:43:30] <mrcoolbp> aye
[02:43:51] <mrcoolbp> juggs: I'm looking at chromas's submission now
[02:45:06] * juggs wishes he had a $5K monthly expense tab
[02:45:54] <mrcoolbp> juggs: don't even think about it...
[02:46:01] <mrcoolbp> = )
[02:48:15] <juggs> Heh, we need to network and comingle with others in the meta-space to best exploit or synergistic opportunities. Gimme a no limits credit card damn it!
[02:48:24] <juggs> :D
[02:49:19] <mrcoolbp> juggs I will assasinate you
[02:49:29] <cmn32480> juggs: all my 5k means is that I have spent so much time on the road that I have racked up 5k in airline, hotel and restaurant bills
[02:49:31] * juggs goes to check into low rent motel for a night and tries using SN credit card.... REFUSED INSUFFICIENT FUNDS xD
[02:49:50] <mrcoolbp> juggs: yeah the card we gave you was a dummy
[02:50:09] <cmn32480> or was that the guy you gave it to?
[02:50:43] <cmn32480> I'm sorry, I'm new here, I shoul;dn't take pot shots...
[02:50:55] <cmn32480> nope... I really should
[02:50:57] * mrcoolbp posts chromas's old mac, new internet story
[02:51:20] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: it's okay, he's just the CEO of SN = )
[02:51:29] <mrcoolbp> or president or something
[02:51:34] <cmn32480> what's he gonna do? fire me?
[02:52:25] <cmn32480> "under no circumstances should a person able to get elected to an office be allowed to hold it"
[02:52:29] <juggs> cmn32480, yep, I know - I've done the travelling business rep thing before. Both on my own CC and in one lucky job I got a £2K GBP "float" which was nice.
[02:52:46] <cmn32480> Douglas Adams, I believe
[02:53:07] <juggs> cmn32480, Peter principle. These buggers put me somewhere I could do no harm
[02:53:23] <cmn32480> I'm on the technical side, (shocking, right?)
[02:53:46] <mrcoolbp> juggs: meh, you could prolly still fire him, even though he's not "officially" staff or whatever. I'll allow it.
[02:53:49] <juggs> I was also on the tech side at the time, just travelling to clients
[02:53:58] <cmn32480> we do all our own wireless work from the site surveys to pulling cable, installatina dn config
[02:54:34] <cmn32480> in the end
[02:54:46] <cmn32480> all it means is that I have another night in some hotel away from the wife adn kids
[02:55:01] <cmn32480> but, it pays the bills
[02:55:08] * juggs files police report for an assassination attempt. Knowing this country they'd probably take it seriously too :(
[02:55:21] <juggs> threat*
[02:55:49] <mrcoolbp> juggs: yah, can't mess 'round with that herer
[02:56:08] <mrcoolbp> okay, well I'm spent on the editing, thanks everyone for the rally-effort
[02:56:22] <mrcoolbp> I can maybe do one more...
[02:56:33] <juggs> I'll do one more
[02:56:38] * mrcoolbp isn't touching subsentients
[02:56:41] * juggs stops gassing
[02:56:57] <mrcoolbp> juggs: you can pick first
[02:57:27] <cmn32480> I'll get the Eclipse story in before I go to bed
[02:57:29] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: you can edit one too if you want, just resubmit to dev and edit there, I'll repost
[02:57:34] <mrcoolbp> or do that
[02:57:39] * mrcoolbp forgot
[02:57:49] * mrcoolbp worked like 26 hours this weekend
[02:57:55] <mrcoolbp> like sat-sun alone
[02:58:01] <cmn32480> np. it has been a long day
[02:58:08] <mrcoolbp> not counting SN...
[02:58:22] <juggs> OK - I'll do cmn32480's boot camp one. That looks not so hard
[02:58:57] <cmn32480> heh... the problem wiht me editing on dev is that most of what is left in the queue has my name on it already
[03:00:08] <juggs> I have no idea why a non-editor (me) is editing a mostly trained editor's submission. Must be the weekend :D
[03:00:20] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: I'll be around for at least another hour, just ping me here when done, I'll repost
[03:00:28] <mrcoolbp> and I'll take all the credit!
[03:00:31] <mrcoolbp> mwahahaha
[03:00:39] <mrcoolbp> juggs: tis
[03:00:54] <mrcoolbp> juggs: you are awesome
[03:01:08] <cmn32480> frightening thing these weekends are
[03:01:24] <mrcoolbp> Subsentient: oh QA person, would you 2nd ed our most recent story posts?
[03:01:34] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: concur
[03:02:08] <mrcoolbp> subsentient: for a laugh, click "submission" on the editing page for my france vaccination story
[03:02:16] <mrcoolbp> slightly different = )
[03:02:52] <mrcoolbp> oh crap, someone already 2nd-ed all the stories
[03:03:00] * mrcoolbp goes to check whodunnit
[03:03:17] <mrcoolbp> LaminatorX is silently checking us
[03:03:20] * mrcoolbp runs and hides
[03:05:27] <mrcoolbp> subsentient: thought they are "green" feel free to re-check
[03:08:08] <cmn32480> he is silently checking... but not logged in to IRC. Is that fair?
[03:08:37] <cmn32480> Kinda like my Dad checking to see when I got home last night.
[03:08:40] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: he's the editorial boss, he makes the rules
[03:08:47] <mrcoolbp> = )
[03:10:04] <cmn32480> Strange that none of us got the cold feeling of a ghost in the room
[03:10:08] * juggs finds both LamX and janrinok scary in their attention to detail and seriousness when it comes to the editing process. We need these guys we really really do, they don't get enough credit because much of what they do is unseen, but I still find them scary in a way :D
[03:10:26] <mrcoolbp> he's a well-spoken ande intelligent person suited to the role. I just wish to expand his team. the job of an editor is unending and equally rewarding-yet-strenuous
[03:10:36] <mrcoolbp> juggs: yup.
[03:11:16] <mrcoolbp> everytime lamx speaks, I just grab some chips and enjoy. He tickles the arm-hairs
[03:11:42] * juggs jiggles on mrcoolbp's arm hairs

[03:19:18] <juggs> Sooo many people have mentioned my voice over the years. I have no idea what the fascination is. I have a stammer / stutter when stressed and avoid using hard syllables or use delays / vowel elongations in those scenarios to work around that. When I listen to my own recorded voice I feel really uncomfortable. from the I-just-don't-get-it dept.
[03:19:34] <mrcoolbp> cmn32480: lemme look
[03:20:01] <mrcoolbp> juggs: meh, you sound like a british morga freeman

[04:12:55] <juggs> mrcoolbp, this is why UKites are no longer allowed firearms - living on an island rather than a continent leads to overcrowding and abrasion.
[04:13:43] <mrcoolbp> juggs: we shouldn't really be allowed them either, but they are fun sometimes
[04:17:54] <juggs> I disagree. A gun is just a tool. Regulate / criminalise the use thereof not the possession for lawful purpose.
[04:19:02] <mrcoolbp> juggs: you can come visit, we have a firing range with automatic weapons for rent (no pre-reqs) 45 min from my house

[04:20:40] <juggs> Guess what happened when the UK banned hand guns... London saw a decline in shootings and an incline in stabbings from knives. Not sure that's a win.

[04:23:57] <juggs> mrcoolbp, I am not arguing one side or the other either as the debate is geographically influenced too.
