[15:34:40] <janrinok> Hi Woods - another editing frenzy!
[15:34:52] <Woods> Woo! Party time
[15:35:36] <janrinok> I'm having to double check my release times - I nearly hit one of yours before! How's things?
[15:47:52] <Woods> No worries, it happens. I am doing well, how about yourself?
[15:51:58] <janrinok> OK - had a good day working in the garden and now 'relaxing' with a bit of editing.

[16:54:34] <Azrael> LaminatorX: sorry, I'm not awake (belated reply)

[16:57:05] -!- janrinok|afk has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
[16:57:47] <Azrael> yo yo mrcoolbp
[17:04:11] <LaminatorX> That's alright.
[17:04:36] <LaminatorX> How are you feeling about the editor tools? Any questions?
[17:05:26] <mrcoolbp> Azrael: ^
[17:06:35] <Azrael> No questions... but not sure if that's because I understand it, or if I'm utterly clueless about what I don't understand :D
[17:09:21] <LaminatorX> I'm puzzled by the quotes around the entirity of the bomber story. Were those in the submission, or did you add them?
[17:12:58] <Azrael> I think they were in original submission
[17:13:31] <LaminatorX> Alright. That would be something to remove.
[17:13:33] <Azrael> but they do look odd
[17:14:28] * Azrael nods
[17:16:24] <LaminatorX> In selecting stories, one-liners might often benefit from a bit of elaboration or the addition of a quote from the source as well. Some submissions come in ready to go, but some just give us a skeleton.
[17:17:03] <LaminatorX> When the submission bin gets sparse, it becomes worth our while to flesh them out a bit.
[17:17:31] <LaminatorX> Overall your stuff looks good though.
[17:18:33] <LaminatorX> One thing to watch out for that hasn't come up in your sample stories is the user link.
[17:19:20] <LaminatorX> By default , slash will assume that the submitter is a registered user, and create a link to the submitter's member profile, even if none exists.
[17:19:36] <LaminatorX> It's good to check that, and remove the link if it's dead.
[17:21:00] <Azrael> *nods* so keep their name, just unlink it
[17:21:22] -!- janrinok|afk [janrinok|afk!~janrinok@dkotlmp-551-5-474-67.w66-34.abo.wanadoo.fr] has joined #editorial
[17:21:25] <mrcoolbp> if they don't have a SN account, yes
[17:21:32] <Azrael> :D
[17:21:54] Bytram is now known as Bytram|afk
[17:23:15] <LaminatorX> Similarly, some will override the default to put in a link of their own. We generally kill email links to avoid feeding spammers. Beyond that, use your judgement. If someone wants to link to their personal blog that's more or less alright. If it looks like astroturf marketting though, kill it.
[17:26:08] <Azrael> *nods*
[17:31:24] <LaminatorX> Have you heard how approach publication pace yet?
[17:31:40] <LaminatorX> "how we approach"
[17:33:22] <Azrael> I haven't
[17:35:34] <LaminatorX> We're guided by submission volume. The more submissions we have, the more frequently we publish, and vice versa.
[17:36:22] <Azrael> that makes sense, no point pushing things out quickly only to run out
[17:36:34] <LaminatorX> For example, on the production site, we currently have over 20 submissions in the queue, so we're posting around one an hour.
[17:37:09] <Azrael> I assume when things slow down editors should try a llittle harder to find good stories?
[17:37:27] <LaminatorX> In the teens, we post every 1.5-2 hours. Under ten, we post roughly every 3 gours.
[17:38:24] <LaminatorX> If things get really low, we go scrounging ourselves.
[17:39:02] <Azrael> *nods* but an editor who finds a story shouldn't be the one to post it, so it goes past at least someone else?
[17:39:55] <LaminatorX> Correct, except in extremis. We also slow posting down over the weekend and late at night, usually to around a story every 2-3 hours.
[17:40:08] <Woods> Quick note: Users that have a space in their name i.e. "Angry Jesus" will have a broken user link by default, "/~angryjesus/". You will have to change it to "/~angry+jesus/" to account for the space.
[17:40:38] <LaminatorX> I have self-posted stories about breaking news, for example, though I checked the sub-bin first to see if anyone had submitted something.
[17:40:52] <Azrael> Woods: so + instead of %20 ?
[17:41:01] <Azrael> LaminatorX: *nods*
[17:41:36] <Woods> Azrael: I am sure either work, but Slashcode uses +, so I use +. Also, that is 66% fewer characters you have to type.
[17:41:46] <Azrael> :D
[17:41:54] <Azrael> I like lazy!
[17:43:52] <LaminatorX> WRT hot news generally, feel free to post a story immediately if it warrants it, reqaurdless ofwhat else is going on with submissions and pace. Major security exploits, war, high-profile deaths/resignations/buyouts, etc.
[17:45:48] <Azrael> *nods* I imagine there would be few circumstances where that would happen when there wasn't anyone here to get 2nd opinion from
[17:47:30] <LaminatorX> Never a bad idea.
[17:48:06] <LaminatorX> We do sometimes confer on questionable cases or changes to submitted stories.
[17:50:04] <LaminatorX> Is there anything you feel like you would benefit from more attention on?
[17:50:34] <Azrael> not at this time, but I reserve the right to changemy mind :D
[17:51:13] <LaminatorX> Have you come across any munged unicode?
[17:51:30] <Azrael> I haven't
[17:52:42] <LaminatorX> This hopefully will be corrected in the next release, but while slash will currently display unicode characters, they often get scrambled in the submission process.
[17:54:57] <LaminatorX> If you see some gobledygook in a submission, try to work out what it was supposed to be, and refer to the table up in the topic above (or another uni-resource of your choice) to find the appropriate &#####; code for that character. Entering that code into the editor will work.
[17:55:52] <LaminatorX> We often see things like slanty quotes turning into three seperate characters as slash parses the submission.
[17:56:30] <LaminatorX> I believe TheMightyBuzzard has this fixed on dev, but production does not have the change yet.
