[16:05:47] <fyngyrz> I've the vague feeling my soylent sub is near expiring; looked for info on that on my user page, couldn't find it. What am I missing? Frankly, this should be VERY easy to find, like, IN-YOUR-FACE easy
[16:28:37] <Bytram> fyngyrz: lemme check
[16:29:24] * Bytram goes to https://soylentnews.org
[16:29:27] <exec> └─ 13- SoylentNews User
[16:29:33] * Bytram clicks on submissions tab
[16:29:45] <Bytram> sees one entry dated 2018.05.03
[16:30:01] <Bytram> I don't see the sub you are talking about??
[16:30:12] <fyngyrz> sub SCRIPTION
[16:30:16] <Bytram> Oh!
[16:30:21] <Bytram> wrong 'sub' !!
[16:31:06] <fyngyrz> I've the vague feeling my soylent subscription is near expiring; looked for info on that on my user page, couldn't find it. What am I missing? Frankly, this should be VERY easy to find, like, IN-YOUR-FACE easy
[16:31:40] <Bytram> it is.
[16:31:40] <Bytram> https://soylentnews.org
[16:31:43] <exec> └─ 13fyngyrz - SoylentNews User
[16:31:57] <Bytram> Right under "Subscriptions" on that page.
[16:32:20] <Bytram> looks like last sub was on 04-12-18 for one year.
[16:32:29] <fyngyrz> where???
[16:32:45] <Bytram> did you click the above link
[16:33:00] * Bytram has admin powers so may see things differentlyt
[16:33:05] <fyngyrz> I am on that page
[16:33:12] <Bytram> then search for the word "Subscriptions"
[16:33:28] <fyngyrz> did - not found
[16:33:32] <Bytram> hmm
[16:34:20] <Bytram> I clicked on the Subscriptions button on that page and it took me to: https://soylentnews.org
[16:34:22] <exec> └─ 13subscribe
[16:34:48] <fyngyrz> I don't have a subscriptions button
[16:34:59] <Bytram> strange.
[16:35:06] <Bytram> case-insensitive search?
[16:35:29] <Bytram> either way, does that newer link get you there?
[16:35:45] <fyngyrz> if it's happening to me, it's probably happening to others. And you REALLY should be showing the current subscription status to everyone, all the time on their user page, agree? I mean, you want to survive, right?
[16:36:10] <fyngyrz> yes, that does it
[16:36:35] <Bytram> yes, that would be a "Good Thing" (TM)
[16:37:59] <Bytram> FYI, found another place that will take you there.
[16:38:48] <Bytram> "Navigation" slashbox on the LeftHand Side of the main page, sub section "You", click "Subscribe" and it will show you your current status as well as give you an opportunity to start/extend
[16:38:57] <Bytram> agreed that is less than ideal, though.
[16:38:57] <fyngyrz> no. it doesn't.
[16:39:04] <Bytram> wha?
[16:39:11] <fyngyrz> it takes me there, but it doesn't set the user field
[16:40:03] <fyngyrz> I agree it SHOULD set the user field, but, no.
[16:40:35] <Bytram> no, that's something you can enter another user's nick in to see what is set up for THEM, scroll down.
[16:41:01] <Bytram> the slashbox link for Subscribe takes me to: https://soylentnews.org
[16:41:04] <exec> └─ 13subscribe
[16:41:23] <Bytram> ignore the yellow-highlighted stuff
[16:41:25] <fyngyrz> oh - I see it. Way down the page.
[16:41:46] * Bytram prolly has a bigger monitor -- is right there staring at me. =)
[16:41:53] <fyngyrz> imma gonna call that out as very much sub-optimal
[16:41:55] <fyngyrz> :)
[16:42:30] <Bytram> just gotta remember that the yellow-highlight pertains to your super-duper admin powahs
[16:42:48] <Bytram> is far from the best UI layout I've ever seen
[16:42:58] <Bytram> it's consistent in its own (warped) way.
[16:43:11] <fyngyrz> so... user doesn't see the yellow part?
[16:43:15] <fyngyrz> normally, I mean?
[16:43:17] <Bytram> right.
[16:43:23] <fyngyrz> well, that's better
[16:43:43] <Bytram> for giggle, put my nick in there; martyb
[16:44:04] <Bytram> there== "User" field in the "User Admin" field box
[16:44:23] <fyngyrz> <grump>still should be where "This page was generated by a flock of not-caring-about-subscription-code" is at the top of the user page, though
[16:44:48] <Bytram> *chuckles*
[16:45:15] <fyngyrz> </grump>
[16:45:17] <Bytram> just need another slashbox, make it an option in user prefs, default to off(?)
[16:46:06] <fyngyrz> I *like* this place. I want it to survive. It's near-unique in its policies, and I think it's a valuable, if highly under-visited, place on the web
[16:46:16] <Bytram> soylentnews++
[16:46:16] <Bender> karma - soylentnews: 1
[16:46:23] <Bytram> agreed!
[16:46:32] <fyngyrz> I worry when I look at the goals thing on the home page
[16:46:41] * Bytram just might have put some effort into its staying around.
[16:46:47] <fyngyrz> yeah
[16:47:06] <Bytram> and lack spare time to do much more than push out stories most days... there's so much more I'd like to do, but lack the time to do it.
[16:47:27] <Bytram> Take a glance here: https://soylentnews.org and look at "Most Active Authors"
[16:47:32] <exec> └─ 13SoylentNews: Hall of Fame
[16:47:50] <Bytram> that's on top of what time I put in doing QA.
[16:48:13] <Bytram> Would love to be able to do some coding, but run out of time to add that in.
[16:48:49] <Bytram> thank $diety for the other eds who have a done a great job of pushing out stories, too.
[16:49:10] <fyngyrz> I've seen it. As I let everyone know initially, my input is in fixing the little goofs that get into stories. I've also written code for you folks that I think would help, made suggestions a-plenty... and before anyone says otherwise, I know it's hard to change the code. But that's my schtick.
[16:50:05] <Bytram> If there were some way to make coding changes without having to go through the github mystery-meat GUI navigation...
[16:50:16] <Bytram> fyngyrz++ thanks for all your contributions!
[16:50:16] <Bender> karma - fyngyrz: 3
[16:55:29] <fyngyrz> also... didn't know you were martyb. Hi. :)
[16:55:41] <fyngyrz> I get the handl enow
[16:56:47] <Bytram> hi.
[16:57:15] <Bytram> not something I advertise, but it is a reasonably well-known moniker
[16:57:36] <Bytram> we had WAY too many nicks here in IRC starting with the letter 'm'
[16:57:57] <Bytram> tab complete was... wonky... as people would join/leave
[16:58:09] <Bytram> so came the edict that there are to be NO nicks starting with 'm'
[16:58:20] <Bytram> just reversed my nick and, voila!
[16:58:30] * fyngyrz doesn't have tab complete
[16:58:40] * Bytram used hexchat
[16:59:19] <fyngyrz> Limechat here
[16:59:27] <fyngyrz> uh...
[16:59:32] * fyngyrz DOES have tab complete
[16:59:37] <Bytram> --=)
[16:59:39] <fyngyrz> Bytram:
[16:59:41] <Bytram> HTH!
[16:59:41] <fyngyrz> heh
[17:24:17] <Bytram> Break time.
